Marvel made its LEGO debut in 2002 with the Spider-Man sub-theme of LEGO Studio. Since then we’ve seen LEGO sets based on most films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, X-Men, as well as a steady stream of Spider-Man sets for builders of all ages. Large-scale sets like Avengers Tower, The X-Mansion, and The Daily Bugle have proven incredibly popular with collectors and builders alike.

I am Whomping Willow!

One of the most popular movie quotes (and memes) of the past couple years is, “I am Groot!” The lovable Marvel character found his way into our hearts with his unique personality and this singular repeated phrase. Always the kind to help out a friend, and certainly a brethren, it’s only natural for him to lend himself to a fellow famous tree. Builder Letranger Absurde has expertly crafted a microscale Whomping Willow using a LEGO Groot bust as the trunk. Topped with an adorable Ford Anglia, it’s a perfect representation.

Whomping Willow

Great minds must think alike, because as wonderful as this is, it’s not the first Groot-trunk. Back in 2017, our contributor, Benjamin Stenlund (Henjin_Quilones) used the same piece on his “South Gate of Lleidr Castle” build.

In the mood for more Groot? Well, you’re in luck, because we have a little “Moody Groot” just for you! How about more from the Wizarding World and Harry Potter? We have a ton of that too!

A Helicarrier you can carry in your pocket

Ever since I missed out on 2015’s 76042 SHIELD Helicarrier I’ve been looking for a cost-effective way to add one to my collection. I’m still putting aside bits of my LEGO budget, but Didier Burtin has found a better way: A custom microscale marvel. The shape is instantly recognizable: inverted turntable tops make great turbines, and the angled flight decks are right on. Light grey ingots make for great surface details, and a variety of tiles fill in the gaps. The only thing missing is a teeny-tiny Nick Fury. Of course, at this scale maybe there’s a speck of dust on the model that’s meant to be him.

Didier hasn’t shared any instructions, but if you’re looking for a step-by-step guide for a similar model, check out this 2017 version by Wayne de Beer.

LEGO Art revealed as mosaic sets of The Beatles, Marilyn Monroe, Star Wars Sith and Iron Man [News]

LEGO has revealed an entirely new product line of mosaic sets featuring pop culture portraits called LEGO Art. The four initial sets revealed include Iron Man, Marilyn Monroe, The Beatles, and Star Wars Sith. Each of the adult-targeted sets contains an average of 3,250 pieces, a new brick separator, several new elements, an exclusive signature tile, and instructions and extra parts to build 3 or 4 different designs per set. Each set comes with a curated building soundtrack, and as an added bonus, three copies of either the Iron Man or Star Wars sets can be combined to make an “ultimate piece” triple the size of a single portrait.

Each LEGO Art set comes in a box the size of a pizza and will retail for US $119.99 | CAN $149.99 | UK £114.99. The Iron Man portrait will be available globally (including the US) exclusively from LEGO on August 1st. The other three portraits will be available globally from LEGO and various retailers starting August 1st, except in the US which will have to wait a month until September 1st.

A slick Sanctum for Stephen Strange

I’m a sucker for superhero movies. I love the superpowers, the epic explosions, the over-the-top bad guys, and even the mysterious hideouts that shelter the heroes. One such hideout is Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum (Latin for Holy of Holies), a building on Bleeker Street in New York City that serves as both a storehouse for mystic artifacts and a node for protecting the Earth from enemy attacks. Anders Horvath has built a beautiful rendition of the Sorcerer Supreme’s lair, in the style and scale of LEGO’s Creator Expert modular buildings. In fact, it would fit right into your collection at home. It is based on official LEGO set 76108 Sanctum Sanctorum Showdown but upscaled to a point where it is a whole new thing. The interior is lovely, too, so you should check out the album on Flickr. I love the appearance of a microscale Disney Castle, as well as the different weapons on racks. Based on the residents, I’m not positive the Masters of the Mystic Arts still use the place (though they left behind an Infinity Stone), but at least you can get a sandwich or slice of pizza next door!

The Golden Avenger

We’ve seen a number of LEGO versions of Iron Man’s suits over the years. One that doesn’t get nearly enough love, though, is the Mark III. That’s the iconic suit at the center of 2008’s Iron Man, the film that really kicked off the MCU. It was the first red and gold version, and it really did feel like it had stepped off the comic book page and into reality. Happily, Logan W. has come to the rescue with a cool take on the design.

Iron Man Mk III

According to the builder, this creation was the result of playing around with the elements LEGO has released in gold. After finding the right pieces for the helmet, it only made sense to continue on with the rest of the suit. I love the Bionicle part usage in the gold Toa Metru Knee Covers on the upper arms, and the Bohroks shields at the waist. Hero Factory parts also factor in heavily, including the central breast plate. But the part that made me grin the most was the life preserver used to represent the suit’s ARC reactor. All in all, this is an instantly recognizable take on a classic character.
