Samurai mech: The ultimate upgrade

There are a handful of builders who consistently produce spectacular creations; Eero Okkonen is one of them. This time out he’s turned his attention to a reimagining of the classic 2012 Ninjago set 9448 Samurai Mech. It’s quite the upgrade! The official LEGO set is a little clunky and disproportioned, but in contrast Eero has designed a tough giant of a mech, which cleverly integrates the key aesthetic elements of the original, such as the gold stomach ring and katana blade. It’s however in the detailed building of the mech’s head, which utilises an array of black macaroni tubes and specialised elements to create its demonic features, that we see a master-builder lift his model out of the ordinary.

Center yourself with bricks

Connect with your inner self in this blissful build by Rollon Smith. A combination of red minifigure head pieces and Technic ball joints form the cylindrical columns so prevalent in historic East Asian architecture. It wouldn’t be complete without the bamboo, allowing nature to be a part of achieving a state of zen. I also enjoy the addition of incense burning at the foot of the build, helping the minifigure to meditate better.

Parts for 2019 offer a new twist on an old robot

Here’s an adorable figure seemingly pulled right out of the Jetson’s. This happy-looking LEGO robot was created by Sven Franic and featured by our friends at New Elementary. For me, the highlight of the build is the pair of axles with rotation clip used for the bot’s hands. These new pieces appear in the 2019 Ninjago sets and work wonderfully. You can almost hear a mechanical voice spouting off something along the lines of, “My photo-receptors selected these white organic growths for you!”

LEGO Ninjago summer 2019 wave revealed with 12 sets [News]

Today, Swiss retailer meinSpielzeug have revealed the summer wave of Ninjago sets, which consists of eight standard sets plus four Spinjitzu Slammers. It’s a song of ice and dust, as the new sets feature two dominant locales of an icy mountain and a dusty desert. The Serpentines are back again as the primary opponents, with a few even sporting fearsome new headpieces. Meanwhile, the Ninjas’ legendary ship, Destiny’s Bounty, has received quite the makeover. No longer a vessel, this time it’s got six monster wheels and the top deck can convert to a flying ship.

According to meinSpielzeug, the sets will launch May 28. We don’t have standard pricing for them yet, but we can make a rough guess on their price points based on the Swiss prices from the retailer.

Lloyd, your Destiny is...small?

When I reviewed the newest official Destiny’s Bounty set, I was surprised at just how big the set was, coming in at a massive 21 inches long. Now, W. Navarre is seeing just how far to the other end of the spectrum Ninjago can go with this absolutely adorable tiny Destiny’s Bounty. As with any micro model, every piece counts and must be made good use of, but the curved roof of the Bounty’s quarterdeck is what I like most, since getting that rounded top is no small feat, though it’s helped tremendously by the new 1×1 quarter circle tiles.

2019 has arrived and the floodgates of LEGO have opened with 112 new sets available today. Fans of Star Wars, Technic, Ninjago, City, Overwatch, Architecture and even Captain Marvel have a lot to choose from. It can be a lot to process, so we have your guide right here detailing each and every new set.

Some regions have seen these sets on shelves already. but now they are all available online. There are a few sets that really stand out to us, but you can see the complete list of all 112 sets (plus a dozen new key chains) after the jump.

Beautiful pagoda park Ninjago City block

This stunning Ninjago-themed block by Galaktek was part of The Brothers Brick’s recent Ninjago City collaborative display at BrickCon 2018 in Seattle. In fact, it was the winner of our award for best detail, and it is easy to see why. Look for our full wrap-up of the enormous display soon, but in the meantime, let’s take a closer look at this wonderful addition to the city.

Take a moment and appreciate the calm

Serenity. It’s what many of us experience as we build LEGO models — rummaging through the brick bins can be as meditative as raking the sands of the Zen Garden. Rollon Smith captures a little oasis of calm in this model — “a peaceful place for peaceful hobbies”, he calls it. It’s a nicely built scene, packed with detail. I really like the mix of “wood” along the shoreline, and all the little domestic touches visible on the open upper floor. That splash of pink from the tree adds an attractive colour contrast to the building’s black and red tones. Overall it makes a pleasant change to see all those new-ish Ninjago printed pieces making an appearance in a model which isn’t packed full of Ninjas disrupting the peace and quiet with all their martial arts nonsense.

And of course, this model would fit right into the huge Ninjago City collaborative layout that we’re organizing with our readers at the BrickCon LEGO convention in Seattle over the first weekend in October.

Toys R Us LEGO minifigure packs revealed, featuring Harry Potter, Jurassic World, Marvel, Ninjago [News]

Toys R Us, which is still operating in a number of countries despite its well-publicized bankruptcy in the United States, has today uploaded images of four new LEGO minifigure packs. These have traditionally been offered as part of Toys R Us’ annual Bricktober promotion, though unlike previous years, this year’s packages are devoid of any Toys R Us or Bricktober-specific branding. Consequently, we can’t confirm yet if these will be exclusive to Toys R Us, especially given the retailer’s drastically reduced market share. The four packs are each themed to a specific license, featuring Harry Potter, Jurassic World, Marvel Super Heroes, and Ninjago, and include a number of exclusive characters.

Update: LEGO has confirmed on Twitter that these sets will be coming to Barnes & Noble in the United States, though likely with a different timeline than the Toys R Us packs in other parts of the world.

Update 2: LEGO has amended their statement on Twitter, clarifying that only the Harry Potter set will be available via Barns & Noble, with no word yet on availability for the others.

The latest wave of LEGO sets includes several sets designed to work with LEGO Boost — the first sets to extend the 17101 BOOST Creative Toolbox into a true system. Not only are the LEGO City 60194 Arctic Scout Truck and LEGO Ninjago 70652 Stormbringer sets compatible with Boost, they are fusions with the robotics system.

LEGO City 60194 Arctic Scout Truck has 322 pieces and 3 minifigures at $59.99 USD, while LEGO Ninjago 70652 Stormbringer has 493 pieces and 4 minifigures $39.99 USD. Both sets are available now as part of the summer 2018 wave of new LEGO sets, along with Boost released last year.
