LEGO reveals giant Mario & Standard Kart display set on MAR10 Day

Drafting in for the win after the newly released LEGO Mario Kart play sets, The LEGO Group announces a new contender for the Mushroom Cup, the super-sized LEGO Super Mario 72037 Mario & Standard Kart. Containing 1,972 pieces, the set includes a buildable Mario figure with his classic racing Kart, and a display stand for dramatic poses. Older fans will appreciate the larger-scale poseable Mario, with printed eyes and a new mold for the plumber-turned-racer’s iconic moustache; the character should look good next to The Mighty Bowser. The release continues LEGO’s run of large-scale Super Mario-themed sets for collectors, but in a first for coporate synergy, this news coincides with that most super of holidays MAR10 Day, better known the rest of the world as March 10th. LEGO Super Mario 72037 Mario & Standard Kart can be pre-ordered now for US $169.99 | CAN $219.99 | UK £149.99 and will be available to all on May 15th.

Our princess is in this castle, Mario!

We’ve seen some amazing LEGO microscale builds this month thanks to the Marchitecture contest. Matthias Bartsch jumps into the game with a delightful and instantly recognizable recreation of Peach’s Castle from Super Mario 64. A version of the castle appears in the official Super Mario 64 Question Block set, but Matthias’ take greatly expands on the homage with gorgeous landscaping, a larger interior and careful fidelity to the beloved in-game design. Mathias leverages the printed tiles from the official LEGO set but finds clever solutions of his own for details like the micro warp pipe, here represented with a technic pin, and poofy trees made from ice cream toppers.

The roof lifts off to reveal the castle’s interior, with a tiled floor and tiny staircase.

Great Demon King Koopa

The marriage of LEGO and Nintendo that occurred in the last year has been a gift to nerdy builders everywhere. The Super Nintendo set blew our collective minds, and the Mario sets have given builders of all ages a fun new way to interact with the classic characters. Though the game is a cool idea for the Mario sets, the printed pieces and newer molds that LEGO provides in this line give builders a chance to do what they do best and build their own versions. Enter Bruce Lowell and his model of Bowser. At a larger scale than the official LEGO version, this build of the classic bad guy gives more definition and form to his legs and arms. The claws look awesome, and the spiked straps on his arm are an awesome detail. While the official LEGO Bowser’s proportions are a bit cartoonish, this version gives the character a more realistic feel. This is especially true in the face, which Bruce has molded with more depth and detail, abandoning the printed mouth tile and opting for a working jaw instead.

LEGO reveals new Super Mario sets for 2021, bringing Tanooki, Wiggler, and more [News]

Today LEGO has taken the wraps off the second wave of its Super Mario sets, revealing five new sets and 10 new Series 2 blind bags that bring a host of new characters and locations to the build-it-yourself augmented reality game. Slated to hit store shelves starting January 1, 2021, the sets will still require the purchase of the original 71360 Adventures with Mario Starter Course US $59.99 | CAN $69.99 | UK £49.99, but bring new functionality to the game system with a variety of play features.

The Master Your Adventure Maker Set adds a yellow starter pipe that enables a time-challenge mode of play, where you’ll need to rush your Mario through the course as quickly as possible. Two new Power-Up suits for Mario are also coming to the mix: Penguin Mario, which will enable sliding, and Tanooki Mario for spinning. The new wave also introduces a new biome (in addition to the water (blue), fire (red), sand (yellow), and grass (green) from wave 1. The new poisonous Soda Jungle biome will be purple.

“It’s’a him – Mario!”

The new parts in the Super Mario sets are opening a whole new world of possibilities for LEGO fans’ creations. One new world that I’m particularly pleased to see, is Super Mario World, as built by Alex Saar.

Banzai Bill

While I suspect the new sets were the obvious inspiration for this creation, there’s only one piece from the new sets included. That one piece though, the printed Bullet Bill face, really ties the other brick built parts of the scene together with the theme. Maybe it’s just hitting me in the nostalgias really hard, but in my opinion, everything about this creation is pretty perfect. Whether it’s the perfect angles and dimensions on the large background objects, or the texture of the underground, or the way Mario is crouching just enough to look like the giant bullet will graze his head (but those who have played the game will know it’ll just miss him. And Mario himself, the boat tile is the perfect compressed hat, and the black rubber band works brilliantly for the little plumber’s hair and moustache!
