Even if you’re not an Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo gamer yourself, and even if you’ve never played one of the many LEGO games, it’s hard not to appreciate the strange and stunning LEGO creations inspired by video games. Look for lots of LEGO models inspired by Halo, the Legend of Zelda, Gears of War, Pokemon, Final Fantasy, and more. Game on!

With LEGO, the classic Atari becomes a wooden console made of plastic

The Atari VCS console is one of those objects that instantly trigger an emotional response. Seeing Build Better Bricks’ faithful LEGO model of the gaming system takes me back to my childhood, and I suspect will do the same for many other video game fans. Although much smaller than the original machine – consoles back in the late 70s really were bricks – it embodies the wood-fronted spirit of the console. There’s an eye for detail too, with inverted clip and claws mounted on inset bars to create the iconic flick switches, as well as superbly built joysticks. Before you know it, I’m sure this build will have you pining for a quick round of Combat tanks!

Equip the LEGO Apex Legends Wingman and become the Champion [Video]

Games in the Titanfall universe are some of the best first-person shooter games I’ve played, and the surprise free-to-play battle royale Apex Legends is no exception. 20 squads of three enter, one survives, making for a tense spinoff game. My favorite sidearm from Titanfall is the Wingman revolver, and it returns in Apex with increased effectiveness. So, of course, I just had to create a LEGO Wingman for the LEGO gaming arsenal.

The most interesting feature of the Wingman is its reload function. Throwing a switch above the trigger expands the black rails and unlocks the ammo cylinder for removal. I couldn’t get the function switch-activated, but all other parts work including the cylinder lock. Read more and see a video of the Wingman’s features

Building it old school: PlayStation’s Spyro in LEGO

We see a lot of LEGO dragons, but they’re rarely as cute as Marius Herrmann‘s version of digital superstar Spyro. This winged beastie, familiar to PlayStation (and N64 and Xbox One) owners, is a delight, perfectly capturing the cute styling of the character. It’s worth taking a close look at this model to check out some of the details. Don’t miss the smart segmenting of Spyro’s underbelly, the subtle ridges down the tail, and the use of dismantled minifigure legs to provide the dragon’s nostrils! The base is a nice touch, adding more visual interest than simply displaying the model alone, and I love the inclusion of Sparx, Spyro’s flying insect pal.

Long have I served as the guardian spirit

The Great Deku Tree from Nintendo classic Zelda: The Ocarina of Time is given the LEGO treatment by Julius von Brunk. The microscale model is nicely-done, perfectly capturing the tree’s sleepy-looking face. But it’s the amazing photography which sets this creation apart — Julius has combined three images into one to create this stunning look, which manages to make a small model appear much larger. I love how the low angle and out-of-focus foreground foliage gives the tree such physical presence. Excellent stuff.

Rocket barrage incoming from Overwatch’s Pharah

Pharah is such a unique character in Overwatch, combining the classic rocket launcher/jump jet pairing with a futuristic armor suit influenced by Egyptian culture. The team at Build Better Bricks has built an impressive LEGO sculpture of this formidable flying hero. Their model features outstanding attention to detail in her blue armor with gold embellishments throughout and detail in her partially exposed face and braided hair.

B3’s Pharah model is fully articulated to duplicate several flying poses from the game. My favorite is the Ultimate pose, which reveals rocket salvos primed to rain justice from above. Also notable is the clever, compact build of the Overwatch logo on the display stand.

Nostalgic silhouette from the 80’s

Before there was the Game Boy, Nintendo was making Game & Watch devices. It is said that back in 1979, the inventor was on a bullet train watching a bored businessman playing with his calculator, which inspired him to create an LCD gaming device to kill time. From then on and right through the ’80s this silhouette of Mr. Game & Watch has been embedded into many of our brain cells. This 2D silhouette made by Logan W with various LEGO elements may not be perfect, but it definitely is close enough to transport us back in time.

The Dragonborn speaks

Skyrim players the world over know the joy of a well-timed FUS RO DAH! The iconic shouted spell will blast your enemies, and if you time it just right, as in this scene by Victor, the results can be spectacular. This also happens to be the perfect use for LEGO’s new power burst elements from various Superhero sets, showing the blastwave emanating from the Dragonborn. Also not to be missed is the use of the tree-costume element as the tree’s trunk. Despite the obvious application, this is actually the first time I’ve seen a good tree made with that element.

This classic video game enemy is even less threatening when made of LEGO

The folks at Build Better Bricks have continued their series of LEGO designs based on Super Mario characters with this adorable Goomba. This build looks pretty simple at first glance, but there are some clever techniques used to create the simple shapes of the classic video game foe. The eyebrows were the first thing to catch my attention, the key piece attaching them to the body seems to be the relatively new bar 1L with 1×1 round plate with hollow stud. I’m not sure how they achieved the half-stud offset for the mouth, but I guess I could buy the instructions if I really wanted to find out.

This Goomba would look perfect alongside the Mario, Luigi, and Bowser models by Build Better Bricks we previously featured.

Atmospheric LEGO Alfheim from God of War

Germany’s Marius Herrmann is a God of bricks with this beautifully crafted river scene practically straight out of the PlayStation 4.

This model was directly inspired by Marius’ playthrough of the most recent game in the God of War series and you can see here in this comparison screenshot just how accurately he recreated the rocky details and moody atmosphere. From the arching, crooked cherry blossom trees to the rocky statue half-submerged in the river every detail evokes the emotional tale of Kratos bonding with his son Atreus on their journey.

LEGO Overwatch Reinhardt enters the battlefield

A LEGO Overwatch build has been revealed, and it’s this awesome rendition of the hero Reinhardt by Herbert Lee. The heavily-armored German is classified as a tank in the massively popular first-person shooter video game and his appearance here more than justifies the title. The model’s stout form looks like it can take a beating and the helmet looks remarkably accurate to the game, as does his signature rocket hammer.

As an added bonus the Reinhardt model’s base is also a meticulously built and overly greebled recreation of the Overwatch logo. It also puts into perspective just how big Reinhardt is in brick form.

Let’s go for a ride! This LEGO Junkrat from Overwatch will blow your mind!

Blizzard’s Overwatch brand is now an official LEGO theme and it seems to be inspiring even more fans to create their favourite characters from their favourite bricks. This time it is Joffre with his interpretation of the insane Junkrat character.

The build perfectly captures the character, from various explosives to his iconic leg prosthetic and his crazy face — the latter probably being the best part. All sorts of colours in the hair capture the singed ‘do, while the raised eyebrows and his tongue sticking out show what a fun-loving guy he is. The pants also give a surprising amount of detail in their exotic colour scheme, which is a big plus to the overall build.

LEGO Minecraft Big Figs Series 1: 21148 Steve with Parrot, 21149 Alex with Chicken, and 21150 Skeleton with Magma Cube [Review]

Minecraft keeps getting bigger — and I’m not just talking about the game’s record-breaking sales. The original LEGO Minecraft set I helped design back in 2011 as part of LEGO’s early Ideas platform was microscale, mostly due to the steep constraints of hitting a roughly $30 MSRP target. Later, that first wildly successful set was followed by more microscale sets, and finally in 2014 the theme got upgraded to our original vision by introducing minifigure-scale sets. Recently, LEGO bumped up the scale a bit with 41612 Steve and Creeper BrickHeadz. Now LEGO Minecraft is upping its game once more with a new line called Big Figs, and we’ve got the first series comprising three sets to review: 21148 Steve with Parrot, 21149 Alex with Chicken, and 21150 Skeleton with Magma Cube. Each of the sets contains a large figure paired with a small animal from the game, and will be available January 1 for $14.99 USD.
