LEGO and Universal Music Group to create music-based toys [News]

LEGO and Universal Music Group (UMG) have announced a partnership to create a new lineup of music-based sets that seek to inspire children to express themselves musically and explore their creativity through interactivity. The music sets will be revealed later this year and are scheduled for launch in 2021.

Universal Music Group is separate from Universal Pictures which announced a five-year agreement to produce and distribute LEGO movies earlier this week. We also don’t know if the recent LEGO Ideas “Music to Our Ears” competition is at all related to this announcement, though LEGO is evaluating bringing some of the submissions to market as sets.

The full press release and a LEGO music equalizer announcement video are included after the jump.

Wonder Woman 1984 LEGO set revealed as 76157 Wonder Woman vs. Cheetah [News]

The newest LEGO DC Comics set has been revealed as 76157 Wonder Woman vs. Cheetah. Posted by Amazon.es earlier today, the set is based on the upcoming summer blockbuster Wonder Woman 1984. LEGO SPOTS for boys revealed as new extension of LEGO DOTS [April Fools]

LEGO has revealed SPOTS, a new extension of the DOTS product line targeted at boys. The initial wave of the 2D tile-based crafting theme features armbands, expressive emoji picture holders, a flaming skull pencil pot, and the first in a series of “Extra SPOTS” emoji booster packs surrounding space exploration. Prices vary from US $4.99 to $19.99 with availability beginning April 1st.

The creation of SPOTS is partially due to feedback on LEGO’s successful DOTS product line for exclusively targeting girls with bright colors, pastel packaging and glitter. The SPOTS theme again features building with 1×1 tiles (square, round, and quarter-circle tiles), but this time uses more black, white, red and blue colors along with unique prints of bugs, fire, road signs, grotesque emojis and space artifacts that more easily align with boys’ interests.

LEGO and Nintendo reveal new Super Mario product line [News]

LEGO and Nintendo have revealed a new Super Mario product line that features an interactive LEGO Mario figure who collects coins in levels created with physical LEGO bricks. The partnership with Nintendo was teased earlier this week and will bring an entirely new kind of game experience based on everyone’s favorite plumber. The oversized Mario figure contains a screen and speaker and reacts to the level built around it.

The press release from LEGO calls the new lineup “neither a video game nor a traditional LEGO brick-based set,”  letting kids create their own gaming environment like Super Mario Maker except with physical bricks. LEGO Super Mario will be available “later this year” with no specific date mentioned. (EDIT: Read our exclusive interview with one of the designers of LEGO Super Mario for more info.)
