Earlier in February LEGO announced the new augmented reality themes as Hidden Side to help bridge physical and digital play. We also had our first in-person look at it at the New York Toy Fair. Today, 7 of the 8 Hidden Side set details were revealed. These are slated to be released on August 1st.

If you’re a fan of the Marvel Superheroes theme, you might remember the only official Giant-Man LEGO figure was found in set 76051 Super Hero Airport Battle. It was built and designed to look like an upscaled minifigure, but the sharp angles made it feel a bit boxy. Personally, I prefer what hachiroku24 has done by using various parts typically found in LEGO’s constraction (buildable action) figures like the Elite Praetorian Guard. I think it gives the figure a more life-like appearance and, if you fancy it, you can build one of your own using this video instruction guide.
Something I’ve always wondered is if both BB-8 and R2-D2 converse in the same droid language. As it turns out, based on the Data Files from Star Wars, it seems that BB-8 speaks a 27th-generation droidspeak — I assume a newer form of communication. This means that BB-8 could be spewing out vulgarities at poor old Artoo and he’d be none the wiser. These two builds by Rui Miguel Anacleto of the two famous droids are some of the best-looking LEGO-built droids that I’ve seen at this scale.
Granted, the dome of R2-D2’s headpiece isn’t quite round, but I like how the detailing is captured by utilising printed parts from the official versions in their individual polybags.
Swiss builder Hannes “Marshal Banana” Tscharner has been in pursuit of a movie-accurate Millennium Falcon ever since he first shared his 7,500-piece custom LEGO Millennium Falcon back at the end of 2015. He’s recently overhauled his 2015 model thanks to some new parts that were released in the official Ultimate Collectors Series (UCS) 75192 Millennium Falcon in 2017.
His journey started when he was inspired by images and teaser trailers from The Force Awakens in November 2014. Back then, the largest official Millennium Falcon available was the 10179 UCS version with a part count of 5179 pieces. We learned from our interview with Hannes that his 2015 version stood at 7,500 pieces and wasn’t built in reference to any existing LEGO sets and was scaled to the cockpit referenced from the System-scale 75105 released for The Force Awakens earlier in the fall of 2015.

Back in December, LEGO Stores in the US and Canada launched a Star Wars box promotion that featured 5 rare polybags. Earlier this month, it became available in the UK and select European countries, where it was again marketed as a Star Wars Mystery Box. (Specifically, the countries included Great Britain, Sweden, Denmark, Austria, Germany, France, and Belgium.) While both region-locked promotions are over, we’re here to have a quick look at what we found inside, though it should be noted that not all the boxes are the same. What’s in the box? Is it worth it? Let’s take a quick look first at what we found in our box and the promotion details.

I’ve been consciously avoiding all things Star Wars: Episode IX including the teaser trailer, but I’ve learned in some ways its almost useless to resist. It’s impossible to hide with the fans of LEGO and Star Wars taking to the brick to recreate what they’ve glimpsed in trailers and at Star Wars Celebration. This droid companion seems to be the new rising star and is cleverly captured in action by Takamichi Irie. All we know so far is that the droid is named D-O. We can’t help but notice that it’s also painted in our very own TBB colors!

LEGO has announced two new sets built for STEAM Learning. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics, and is an academic approach for getting kids enthusiastically involved in education. The LEGO system will include SPIKE Prime, which is the new hands-on learning kits and a new Inspire set released by LEGO Education, along with two additional sets, Boomtown Build and City Shaper.
The Inspire sets are both architecture-themed (though they have no relation to the popular Architecture LEGO theme), and they will be available for the 2019-2020 FIRST LEGO League and FIRST LEGO League Jr. seasons. Continue reading
Before the official LEGO House Dinosaurs have had a chance to escape in the upcoming exclusive sets, we’re already getting variants of them. This bad boy by hachiroku24 is a tiny replica of the Technic Dinosaur in the LEGO House. Although it’s not exactly a duplicate in likeness, the broad strokes of it come across quite nicely in capturing the essence of its larger cousin. The clever repeated use of the Minifigure Utility Belt from the Batman Minifigures gives it that unique mechanical look.

LEGO has officially revealed three new sets from the upcoming Spiderman-Man: Far from Home, which will hit the big screens in July. They bring several new additions to the LEGO Marvel universe, including a some that have been a very long time coming, such as Happy Hogan, who’s finally getting a minifigure 11 years after first appearing in Iron Man. The exact date that these sets will come to shelves is not certain yet, but you can bet they’ll be on shelves by the time the movie debuts; after all, the LEGO sets for Avengers: Endgame are already available now. For the first time ever, Singapore will be having her first LEGO convention, showcasing never-before-seen creations and models built from LEGO bricks by 80 builders from across 4 countries in the region.
While many don’t fancy the Star Wars prequels, I for one am a fan them, especially the Podracers from The Phantom Menace.
