Cat squadron, standing by!

Sometimes you and your buddies see something nice that you want to build in LEGO. It could be anything, inspiration is all around us. I (Mansur “Waffles” Soeleman) have a close circle of fellow builders that we like to call “vehicle dudes” and “teal squadron.” Consisting of Caleb Ricks, Gubi, Thomas Jenkins, Pande (Malen Garek), Tim Goddard, Tom Loftus (Inthert) and more, we get on a group call on Friday evenings and build. During this time, we discuss things that happen in the world of LEGO, Star Wars, and everything in between. It is during one of these remote group build sessions that we discovered artist Spacegooose and their colourful starfighter drawings.

It was their similarity to Star Wars ships that drew us into building them. Their varying styles and functions have enough similarity to belong to one group, and so our builds became a small collaboration. With blessings from the artist who eagerly awaits their designs in LEGO form, we decided to include our own artistic spin as well as matching the original artwork.

LEGO teases a buildable Adidas trainer set [News]

Judging by today’s teaser published by LEGO all across its social feeds, the new co-branded set is dropping on July 1. We’ve seen LEGO partnering with Adidas for shoes and sportswear before, but the new set looks like a buildable Adidas shoe, which is something totally new in the collaboration of the companies.

LEGO collaborates with Hype to release streetwear inspired by the Ninjago theme [News]

LEGO and Hype will be launching a lineup of streetwear apparel inspired by LEGO Ninjago on January 14th LEGO.com and JUSThype.com the following day. The collection will feature Ninjago themed tees, shirts, shorts, hoodies, jo­­­ggers, jackets and bags.

*Pink Floyd space noises intensify*

A long journey to colonise distant star systems require long, space-y psychedelic songs made by musicians such as Pink Floyd, Gong, and Brian Bennet. I was listening to Life on Mars by Dexter Wansel, when I saw pictures of The Ark by Ben Smith. One year in the making, it is a massive rotating vessel which resembles something from the television series The Expanse. Inside, tiny nature habitats built by collaborators Tim Goddard and Inthert provide residence for the people voyaging across the stars.

The Ark

Almost a meter in height, this SHIP hides a custom steel frame to bear the weight of electrical motors, LED lights, batteries, and thousands of LEGO parts. This behemoth of a build is as detailed as it is large, with plenty of greebling to feast the eyes. When taking a closer look, one can marvel at the geometric achievements of circular and conical sections of varying diameters. As for those not as keen for grey space machinery, there is some microscale landscaping by Tim Goddard and Inthert. For there must be life within this cold ship, as the inhabitants yearn to settle down on a distant planet.

LEGO Adidas ZX 8000 sneakers will retail for US $130 [News]

According to SneakerBarDetroit.com, the new Adidas ZX 8000 designed in collaboration with LEGO, will go on sale next Friday, September 25. The retail price is expected to be USD 130. The new sneakers will be available at select retailers, but it seems that the easiest way to grab a pair will be via adidas.com. The full set of official product pictures was published today, too, so feel free to jump under spoiler to take a closer look.

LEGO’s new collaboration with Levi’s uses Dots for customizable clothing [News]

LEGO’s new collaboration with clothing brand Levi’s is the next step for the Dots theme introduced early this year. Teased last week, the new clothing line for adults and kids will feature small patches of material similar to the LEGO Dots bracelets sewn onto a variety of jackets, hats, accessories, and of course, denim jeans. The small patches of studs can then be adorned with LEGO elements drawn from the Dots theme. The brands are being shy about details as yet, though, with no word on the specific pricing or when you can expect to be able to purchase them. LEGO has also recently unveiled a collaboration with athletic brand Adidas.

First Look: Unboxing of the LEGO and Adidas ZX 8000 sneaker collaboration [News]

We get a first look at the LEGO and Adidas collaboration of the ZX 8000 with an unboxing video by Highsnobiety. The sneakers was sent by Adidas Headquarters in Germany in customised box for a media reveal.

LEGO drops a teaser video of upcoming Adidas collaboration [News]

Yesterday, LEGO dropped a 20-second teaser video on all social media channels showcasing a pair of sneakers floating out of a shoebox with the A-ZX printed on the outer shell of the box reveal. The A-ZX series is a throwback and revival of the ZX series which was first launched in 1984 and the A-ZX project in 2008.

LEGO teases a colourful collaboration with Levi’s [News]

Today, a new, unexpected partnership got teased on the LEGO’s Twitter feed, and it looks like your next pair of jeans from Levi’s might be compatible with your collections of plastic bricks.

Judging by the hashtag #dotyourworld, which accompanied the marketing campaign for the LEGO DOTS products, companies might reveal new apparel collection with customizable elements. No other information is available at the moment.

In their attempt to attract new customers, especially the adult audience who might not be interested in toys, but recognize and like the brand, the LEGO Group has been very active venturing into new collaborations. Over the last two year, the Danish toymaker announced themed mobile games with Augmented Reality supported by Apple devices, started a partnership with Universal Music Group to create a new lineup of music-based sets, and most recently revealed a series of new storage products developed together with IKEA.

Wait a minute, Mr. Postman

What do you get when four of the most talented castle builders out there collaborate on a series of LEGO builds? It’s a bit like alchemy, because the result is solid gold. Well, Grant Davis, Simon Hundsbichler, Marcel V., and Markus Rollbühler teamed up to show the life of a postman, carrying the mail across every bridge in the realm to make sure each and every citizen receives their letters on time. Each build is different in every detail, except the postman himself, but they are all scaled and shot to mimic the others, with the result that the builds complement each other perfectly. I’d love to have these framed on my wall, side by side, because these are not just LEGO builds, but art.

It takes a village to make a village

I’ve recently started being interested in the idea of collaborative LEGO builds. Everyone does their part and they all come together to create an amazing piece of art. Such is the case with The Village of Thornefeld a terrific medieval village collaboration from Cole Blood, Timothy Shortell, Grant Davis, Eli Willsea, James Libby and Jake Hansen.

I had the pleasure of seeing this model in person at Bricks Cascade. Photographs can never quite capture the grandness of these large creations, but it was joy to see up close. What’s incredible about this build, besides it’s huge size and masterful execution, is the cohesiveness of the whole thing. Each builder worked within a tight color scheme and used matching rock styles to make all the sections mesh seamlessly. I love the way the ground slopes slowly upward, creating a wonderful rolling landscape and various levels. This is great territory for storytelling which each builder does nicely, creating a bustling village that’s full of life.

I think I finally get Radiohead

LEGO builders Timofey Tkachev and Sheo have put together a tragic band that somehow has nothing to do with Radiohead or Joy Division. That is a total bummer because I really wanted to lay on the references for either band pretty thick but that’ll have to wait for another post now. Instead the members of this sad band are rooted with a much more highbrow notion; each bears the name of great Greek tragedians.
