LEGO Ninjago 70653 Firstbourne [Review]

Over the seven years that LEGO has been releasing sets from their very popular Ninjago theme, there have been a lot of dragons across a wide variety of sizes. The quality of design and play features has improved over the years, and I thought the recent 70612 Green Ninja Mech Dragon from The LEGO Ninjago Movie was about the coolest dragon so far. Until now. In our recent announcement of the summer wave of LEGO Ninjago sets there were two new dragons, and I got my hands on an early copy of 70653 Firstbourne, which is now my new favorite Ninjago dragon. The set includes 882 pieces and 6 minifigures, and it will be available in August for $69.99 USD, along with the rest of the new Ninjago wave and the Ninjago City Docks.

LEGO reveals final set from the new 2018 Fall Ninjago wave: the giant Oni Titan mech [News]

When we announced the rest of the new Ninjago lineup, we knew there would be at least one more set revealed. Now LEGO has revealed the Oni Titan mech as that final set. This fall the Ninjago crew is headed to the wastelands, where they’ll match wits and blades with a band of road warriors with fearsome scavenged vehicles. The Oni Titan, however, is a bit more traditional Ninjago, though we’re not sure yet if he’s fighting for the Ninjas or Garmadon. Besides the Oni Titan mech, the set includes 4 minifigures. LEGO’s Ninjago City is expanding with 70657 Ninjago City Docks [Review]

If you’re like me, you didn’t give The LEGO Ninjago Movie a lot of thought. Sure, The LEGO Movie was great, and The LEGO Batman Movie was surprisingly ok, but a movie based on LEGO’s 7-year-old homegrown Ninjago theme? Our own Dave Schefcik gave it a warm — if not exactly glowing — review, though it wasn’t the box office success that LEGO and Warner Bros hoped for. But unquestionably the film’s highpoint for fans like me — that is to say, adult builders — is that it brought us the absolutely stunning Ninjago City. As I reviewed that set last year, I was struck by the cyberpunk city’s incredible detail and gorgeous techniques. And now, although at first glance it seems an odd choice given that The LEGO Ninjago Movie’s short-lived hype has all but disappeared, LEGO is adding to Ninjago City. 70657 Ninjago City Docks will be available August 1 for $229.99 USD, and features 3,553 pieces and 13 minifigures.

LEGO Ninjago summer wave revealed; features ninjas fighting post-apocalyptic raiders [News]

The new summer wave of 2018 Ninjago sets has been revealed, and the ninjas this time have moved to what appears to be a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Their foes are a band of raiders, and we can’t help but think that the designers over in LEGO HQ in Billund might have had Mad Max: Fury Road playing in the background while working on these sets (a quite different vibe than the designers of the new City Hospital were channeling).

The lineup also includes some more traditional Ninjago fare as well, such as flying spinners and of course several dragons. The blue dragon, 70652 Stormbringer, can be paired with LEGO Boost, as we saw in our hands-on demo at the New York Toy Fair back in February. And of course, the biggest set out of Ninjago’s summer wave is the new Ninjago City Docks which we revealed a few weeks ago. We’ll be bringing you a review of that set next week, along with some of the sets below.

Even though we’re getting a look at 11 sets today, we know LEGO still has at least a few more summer Ninjago sets to announce. We’ll be covering those as soon as they’re revealed, so be sure to check back.

Ramen and sushi bar is mouth watering

The Ninjago City modular set, aside from being one of the largest modular sets so far, is jam-packed with amazing interior details. This ramen and sushi bar by SpaceBrick would be right at home next to the official set. This scene is full of great details, like the gentleman with the fishing pole which uses an added LEGO string for a line and the ladder used for a frame at the front counter. Even the sideways window elements with visible studs at the bottom and a narrow gap at the top add perfect visual texture. This model would also fit perfectly into our Ninjago City Collaborative project for this year’s Brickcon in October!

Last year’s LEGO Ninjago Movie (the third installment of the LEGO Movie franchise) has led to the release of the largest modular city set in the entire expert line, 70620 Ninjago City, and the announced 70657 Ninjago City Docks. The modular nature of these sets is the inspiration for our latest collaborative display at BrickCon 2018 this October in Seattle. We were even able to do a test display recently at Emerald City Comic Con (ECCC) in March.

This year’s collaboration will be open to any of our TBB readers who are planning to attend the BrickCon private convention (unfortunately, we can’t accept drop-offs during the public hours). The display at ECCC was well-received by both builders and the general public, and there was a lot of discussions during the event about how to make the display even bigger and better for BrickCon.

Small Temple of Airjitsu is big on charm

There has been a recent wave of microscale models inspired by official LEGO sets… Maybe Brainiac has set his intergalactic collector sights on LEGO creations. This microscale model of 70751 Temple of Airjitsu by play captures many of the great details of the larger set perfectly, from the tree next to the blue blacksmith shop to the gold ornaments on Sensei Wu’s tea shop. The temple itself is the perfect miniature replica of the traditional structure.

Micro Ninjago City for all your micro ninjas!

I must admit the fascinating set 70620 Ninjago City is one of my biggest LEGO dreams. But the only reason I can’t get it yet is its enormous size; I’m simply running out of empty spaces in my room! Luckily, Simon NH gives me a little hope — a very accurate tiny copy of the set that occupies no more than 12×12 LEGO studs.

Describing this wonderful creation would be a dreadful challenge of listing each and every single piece used for its facade, because each of them precisely copies countless accessories from the original 70620 set. So, let me call it a magnificent creation and get back to enjoying pictures of it… And if you’re not into ninjas, check out this equally wonderful tiny copy of 21310 Old Fishing Store.

All the key locations are present in huge Ninjago diorama

There a lot going on in this huge Ninjago diorama. At 145×95 studs in size and made up of more than 11 separate sections and locations, it’s no suprise it took about six months to complete. The build is a collaboration between brother and sister, Robert4168/Garmadon and Kai NRG/Geneva, with the right and left side being t by each sibling respectively. The diorama stays true to the essence of the Ninjago theme with plenty of character in the buidings that include Temple of Airjitzu, Birchwood Forest, Sensei Wu’s tea shop and Dareth’s Mojo Dojo .

LEGO Ninjago + Boost compatibility unveiled at New York Toy Fair 2018 [News]

The major LEGO Ninjago news from New York Toy Fair 2018 today is that the LEGO BOOST system we reviewed recently is being extended to support other product lines, starting with LEGO Ninjago dragons. This confirms information that the LEGO Boost team shared with The Brothers Brick at CES Las Vegas ahead of BOOST’s launch last year — that BOOST is designed as a long-term line, not a one-off set.

The new LEGO Ninjago set, 70652 Stormbringer will retail for $39.99 and go on sale in August (one of the only Summer 2018 sets displayed at Toy Fair). The set was showcased as part of the LEGO Boost area at Toy Fair, and no other Ninjago sets were revealed today.

The LEGO Ninjago Movie available on Blu-Ray, DVD & Digital today [News]

Arriving just in time for the holidays, The LEGO Ninjago Movie is now available for purchase on Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital. We reviewed the movie back when it premiered in September, giving it points for some awesome parts usage, cool tie-in sets and a unique take on an existing LEGO-owned property. There are few different versions of the movie available, so we’ve listed all your buying options after the jump.

More 2018 sets revealed with our Nexo Knights, Ninjago, Friends and Disney Princess Round-up

November is a busy time with new sets revealed for 2018 and we have already revealed 2018 sets Technic, Minecraft, City, DC Comics Superheroes, Architecture and Creator Expert themes, as well as some special 60th Anniversary sets. Now we can reveal a further selection of Nexo Knights, Ninjago, Friends and Disney Princess sets, all pictured below. Even if a particular theme does not take your fancy, there are plenty of new parts to spot within some of the sets.

Ninjago has a sub-theme of Sons of Garmadon for 2018, including a headquarters set, a larger temple and the return of hand-held rip-cord powered sets.
