LEGO Ninjago 71765 Ninja Ultra Combo Mech – Hold on...this isn’t Voltron?! [Review]

The 2022 LEGO Ninjago EVO theme is an interesting one. Not tied directly to the animated series, this wave of sets is designed to capture the interest of the under-represented younger Ninjago demographic with a return to “core” Ninjago concepts. While many of the EVO sets are aimed directly at the 6+ crowd, one larger set earned a 9+ age rating – Ninjago 71765 Ninja Ultra Combo Mech. This 1104 piece set is available now from the LEGO Shop Online for US $89.99 | CAN $119.99 | UK £74.99. Featuring four ninja vehicles that combine into a giant mech, an enemy crawler, and seven minifigures, this entry to the line has a good chance to appeal to a very broad range of LEGO fans. LEGO Marvel Superheroes Mech Armor mania: Wolverine, Iron Man, & Black Panther [Review]

The one constant about Tony Stark is that he’s always working on upgrades; portable suitcase armor, Hulkbuster add-ons, nanotech. And now it seems he’s helping his friends armor up with a line of Marvel Mechs from LEGO. Miles Morales, Thor, and Cap already got in on the fun, and now Wolverine and Black Panther are joining Tony in a new wave. Does mech armor make the hero as much as clothes make the man? Or are these largely extraneous accessories for what are already Earth’s Mightiest Heroes? Let’s find out with a closer look at 76202 Wolverine Mech Armor (142 pieces, US $9.99 | CAN $13.99 | UK £8.99), 76203 Iron Man Mech Armor (131 pieces, US $9.99 | CAN $13.99 | UK £8.99), and 76204 Black Panther Mech Armor (125 pieces, US $9.99 | CAN $13.99 | UK £8.99), which are scheduled to drop on April 1st.

The 3-in-1 Super Robot set gets an upgrade

If for some reason you were disappointed by the recent Super Robot Creator set, have no fear! Nobu Tary has constructed this large-scale version of the mech model. The build features more exaggerated proportions than the original, while maintaining a similar colour scheme. The head has a sharp pointed form, with the horns tucked in and represented by rounded tiles . The chunky boots even have hints of yellow, as seen in the Creator set, and spoiler pieces portray neat-looking ankle guards at the feet. Unfortunately, you can’t build this mech using just the parts found in the original set, but hopefully it will inspire fellow fans to recreate official sets in fun and interesting ways.

You want fries with this mech?

Ivan Martynov routinely builds creations that transport the viewer to different worlds, but this latest digital build digs under them. We’re not sure what this tunnel engineer is constructing with its digging, but based on the colors we’re guessing it’s an upgrade to the intergalactic drive-thru. The yellow and red limbs might not remind you of mustard and ketchup on their own. But paired with those warm brown shades and the rounded shaping…the whole thing is giving off some incredibly charming hamburger-mech vibes. The trans-green eyes even look like a side of pickles. We have seen the future of construction, and it is delicious.

Challengers beware! G Gundam is here!

The God Gundam is a mighty fighting machine from the anime, Mobile Fighter G Gundam, with this fantastic LEGO version of the mech built by Twilightsbrick. The model features proportions accurate to the original design and has the excellent addition of a multi-coloured energy ring. The chest even appears to have a light-up brick inside and matched with the splayed-out wing segments, indicating that this Gundam is about to unleash a powerful attack. The horns or “V fins” are represented by minifigure hands and yellow harpoons, which have previously only featured in diving sets from the late 90s, in that particular colour.

Who says entomology is all about creepy-crawlies?

A retro robot to protect your city

Maybe it’s just the booze talking but the 70s and 80s were the best time to be a kid. I mean, you’ve got Star Wars, Micronauts, Shogun Warriors, and of course LEGO coming out with some freaking awesome themes like Castle and Classic Space. Shannon Sproule knows what I’m talking about. This fabulously retro Metorogādo: City Protector Robo combines the awesomeness of Shogun Warriors, the playability of Micronauts, and maybe even some of the awe of Star Wars. This hits all the nostalgic childhood sweet spots for me. And of course, it’s all LEGO…or mostly LEGO—those shoulder fins are some other brand of brick.

Shannon says it was a miracle to find both a left and a right fin in the loose brick bargain bin. And that’s another cool thing about being a kid; while we likely preferred LEGO, we didn’t care too much if some sweet off-brand parts snuck into our collections now and then. It’s the adults who fret over such things. With childhood wonder intact, (booze references notwithstanding) be sure to check out why Shannon consistently hits all our sweet spots.

This all-porpoise battle mech is ready for anything

We put on flippers to go swimming in the sea, so I guess it isn’t so weird that a denizen of the ocean would put on a pair of robot legs. But Moko has made sure this dolphin is ready for more than just a sight-seeing tour on the surface world. This mech is providing its Cetacean operator with legs, a giant cannon, an energy sword, a targeting computer, and even a prehensile tail that ends in a claw. It might feel like overkill, but when you realize what the sharks have been up to, you see that there’s an underwater arms race going on. Literally, they all have arms now.

This spindly snow mech is tougher than it looks

One of the trademarks of a great mech is the creative use of a certain part. In this case, it’s about a Bionicle-inspired build by Johann Dakitsch, and the part is the gently curving balloon segment, which puts this model head and shoulders above the competition. Get it? Yeah, I’m a dad. And speaking of Bionicle, this model was built as part of a challenge to build Bionicle without the use of the specific parts common with that theme. Johann did a fantastic job creating the signature look using more traditional parts.

This small-scale Evangelion mech is ready to fight some monsters

Inspired by Eva Unit 01 from the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, Derrick Li has built this fantastic-looking miniature LEGO mech. Although the mech has a bright, playful colour scheme, be warned, it is a savage fighter. The thin build captures the humanoid style of the mechs featured in the show with their tall, athletic proportions. There are some inventive techniques applied at the head, such as the use of what appears to be a quarter circular tile representing the glowing yellow eyes. The spindly fingers are formed of wands, from the Harry Potter sets.

There is also a great arch in the back which creates the mech’s odd hunch. It is incredible how accurately Derrick has managed to portray the intricate details of Eva Unit 01, especially in this miniature scale.

You better not cry, Winter Village Mech is coming to town

LEGO builder Anders Martin Hulth has combined at least 5 separate Winter Village sets into the most terrifyingly festive Winter Village Mech that is ready to kick in your doors for merely thinking of throwing out that Christmas tree before Three Kings Day. Nobody is done with Christmas! His 4-barreled rotating reindeer Gatling gun repurposed from Santa’s Workshop will make you take back your cliched joke about how early the mall starts playing Christmas music. You better hope that is just tree sap when his evergreen fist comes smashing through your kitchen window after hearing you say eggnog tastes like toothpaste. This Jingle bell Juggernaut is a Voltroned together Winter Village Station, Santa’s Workshop, Elf Club House, Gingerbread house, Winter Village Cottage and does not suffer fools gladly who deny Die Hard is a Christmas movie.

The Moby Dick of honey bees

I wonder if there is a beekeeper equivalent to Captain Ahab, forever obsessing over one special white honeybee. Whoever that beekeeping Ahab is, they should look no further than this LEGO creation by Christian Lintan. My hunch says once discovered, this monochrome mech will put up a good fight. It might even make Beekeeper Ahab wish they would have pursued something less dangerous, like stamp collecting. I’m loving those Bionicle transparent wings though.
