LEGO Ganesha, remover of creative blocks

The LEGO group has expanded its audience and introduced builders around the world to new stories through its Chinese New Year and Monkey Kid lines. Wouldn’t it be exciting to see sets inspired by Indian culture beyond models of the Taj Mahal? In the meantime, Łukasz Alagierski draws on a colorful mix of parts old and new to present Lord Ganesha, Remover of Obstacles and bringer of luck and new beginnings. Łukasz depicts the elephant god holding the traditional symbols of an an axe, pasha, lotus, and a tray of sweets (that his trunk drifts towards). Surrounded by flowers in a dozen colors and sitting atop a Scala quilt, this Ganesha perfectly captures the look of a Hindu altar scene.

Experience the Wonder of this LEGO Super Mario creation

Super Mario Wonder has been taking the internet by storm lately, with rave reviews for the brand-new side-scrolling video game far and wide. Builder mc tung has brought one of the new power-ups from the game, Elephant mode, into the LEGO-verse with this impressive creation. Mario, sporting his typical hat and mustache, has grown a trunk and giant ears on his quest to save the Flower Kingdom. The trunk technique employed here is particularly nice, giving it a wicked bend atypical for LEGO. It’s an ingenious character build that’s got me saying “wowie zowie” for sure!

A Mûmakil kill still only counts as one

My wife and I are re-reading The Lord of the Rings together after having done so 22 years ago before the first Peter Jackson movie was released. By sheer coincidence, on the same day we read the chapter about the Battle of Pelennor Fields in The Return of the King, Kiwi builder Pieter Dennison shared the conclusion of a months-long project to recreate a Mûmak or Oliphaunt of the Haradrim in LEGO, based on how they appear in the movies.

Pieter’s build features all the iconic details of the enormous beast, from its four tusks (built from a series of 2×2 round bricks presumably strung on something like flex-tube), each with spikes on the end, to the war tower on the monstrous beast’s back. A closer look at the war tower shows just how huge this LEGO build really is, with about a score of minifigs riding into battle against the Rohirrim and men of Gondor.

If you want to see this in person, you can see it at the Christchurch Brick Show this July. And don’t miss all the other LEGO Oliphaunts we’ve featured over the years (also proving that this quote is the only one I ever use to write about this creature).

What do you get when you cross an elephant and a fountain?

Sometimes you just want to have fun, like LEGO builder W. Navarre clearly did when building this amusing vignetter of a hunter getting his comeuppance from a delightfully chibi elephant. The scene playing out here is great, but I’m mostly enthralled by the excellent elephant, who is completely adorable right down to the toenails. I’m also loving how good those grey Mixels eye tiles work turned sideways.

Elephants are back in the new LEGO City Summer 2021 sets [News]

With the first official picture of the upcoming LEGO City sets published by an Italian retailer today, we can finally have a detailed look at all the new elements and animals available this summer. This season it’s all about wildlife and rescuing wild animals. Only three sets are revealed so far, but we expect the line-up to include more products. Prices and availability are yet to be announced, but we expect all the sets to go on sale no earlier than July 1.

The elephant and the mouse

Brick building animals in minifigure scale can be quite a challenge, but Isaac Snyder has risen to the occasion with a brick built elephant to go along with the official LEGO mouse. These cuties are called Olli and Rolli, with Olli being the elephant. There are loads of tales and fables about elephants and mice. In some they are enemies, in others they are friends, I even read one where the mouse kills the elephant because it keeps stepping on its nest. These two however seem to be best friends. Although Olli’s legs aren’t poseable he looks like he is going places. The best part about Olli has to be his feet. The truncated cone actually looks like it was designed to be an elephants foot. With the stud holes functioning as the nails. Olli’s ears and trunk are poseable which allows for a lot of great expressions to be made. And the eyes could be switched with LEGO’s ever-expanding collection of eyes printed on 1×1 round plates.

Surrealism and LEGO are a match made in elephants

The mustachioed surrealist artist Salvador Dali inspired this stunningly spindly pachydermal presentation from Dutch builder Jaap Bijl. This was an entry for Innovalug’s ongoing Style It Up! LEGO building contest. This category restricted creations to maintaining 4 studs’ worth of contact with the display surface. Dali’s “Les Elephants” features just the sort of delicately balanced build many of us actively try to avoid. Thanks to the plethora of newer curved slope pieces over the last few years the Daliphant’s shape is well represented, and I’d almost wager it took longer to get the thing to safely stand in place than it did to build.

Space elephant shines in silver brick

All hail the mighty space elephant! Created by Demetrius Gaouette, this sci-fi war beast is decked out in dazzling silver armor. The use of silver elements is what sets this elephant apart as something from the future. I’m a big fan of the lack of curvature to the elephant’s ears and legs, allowing the viewer to focus on other design aspects like the armor and troops. Next time Blacktron goes to war, they’d definitely want a dozen of these in battle.

Demetrius’ model is a digital render, with some parts not yet commercially available in certain colors illustrated.

Cute from tusk to... tail?

You gotta love it when you see a cool use of parts and wonder, “Why the heck didn’t I think of that?” One of the greatest things about the LEGO community is that we are in a wonderful position to share ideas with each other, all over the world. Inspiration makes us all better builders. And Jens Ohrndorf is certainly a builder who sparks creative ideas. These adorable little pachyderms are part of a menagerie of expertly crafted creatures. Many of which use clever techniques to achieve character. For example, the use of the Unikitty tail element for an elephant trunk is brilliant!

Little Elephant by Bangoo

In sharp contrast to Iain’s Game of Thrones posts yesterday, I thought we could all do with something cute and adorable. Since I have no spare pugs around, this little elephant by Bangoo will just have to do.

If you still need more, I’d recommend either the fox, cat, or dog.
