Si-Bored Industries announces its first new drone of 2017

The news that Si-BORED industries has just released an exciting new edition to their drone lineup has been announced by Canadian builder Simon Liu. The Grunzen drone comes with the tagline, “This all-purpose military unit has been built ground-up to exceed all your combat requirements”. These seem to be fantastically poseable LEGO drones, with more joints than a West coast state after cannabis legalisation. I love the joints that Simon has designed, firstly for the knees using a 1×1 plate with clip as the pivot point, and then the shoulder/elbow joints which ingeniously use a droid torso.

For Star Wars fans, the tan helmets would quickly be recognised as belonging to the Star Wars resistance trooper minifigures from Episode 7. These are great helmets and work perfectly with the colouring and style of Simon’s drones.

The Retro-future is bright: a chat with French builder extraordinaire, Vincent Gachod [Interview]

This week we were able to sit down with Vincent Gachod from Toulouse, in the south of France. While balancing his job as the head of video production at a french university and raising two kids, he finds time to create some incredible LEGO builds. Let’s pick his brain and see what we can learn from this master of the brick.

TBB: How did you get into the LEGO hobby and what inspires you to build?

Vince: I started with LEGO in the mid 70’s with bricks from my brother’s collection. My first set was the 374 Fire Station of 1978. After my “dark age” in the 90’s, I came back to LEGO with my son and his first sets. I’m inspired by lot of influences (movies, animation, videos games, books, magazines, cars, architecture…) but I’m more inspired by the details : a car’s wheel, a plane’s engine or a vintage vacuum cleaner! I often start a MOC from a single detail like a car’s grille or an exhaust pipe. I spend a long time working on details.

If only vacuuming itself was this good-looking

I vividly remember having to vacuum with one of these things. I hated it. And as much as I despised this particular weekly chore, Andreas Lenander has done a brilliant job bringing this monstrosity to life.

The main portion of the vacuum is smooth, well done, and has a short cord to fully irritate you when you try and go from room to room. I particularly like the wall-plug detail, and the ribbed hose works perfect!

What we least expect is what nightmares are made of...

There’s something strangely familiar and yet haunting in this simple creation by Chris Maddison. Maybe it’s the loneliness of being in space or on a far-away planet that evokes the terror of the unknown. What horror lies ahead that seems partially organic and yet at the same time part machine that preys on an unknowing space explorer? Chris pulls off a frightful yet calming scene inspired by an artist who dreams up of things that preys on what we fear the most.

Imperial forces speeder bike reimagined for a snow battle

If there’s one vehicle that I’d like to secretly own from the Star Wars universe, this would be it! The famous speeder bike from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi has been re-imagined in LEGO as a Winter version featured in white, and looks like it could have easily been used in the snow filled scenes from the battle of Hoth. The details that Ian Ying put into this machine make you wonder if this could exist in the real world. The build is clean and full of sleek lines. I just love the silver ribbed hoses as exhaust pipes.

The bike is built to the scale of the official 75114 First Order Stormtrooper figure, which fits on it very well! All I need to know is where do I put my order in to get me one of these in my garage?

Every narcissistic superhero needs their “me, me, me time”

I know you’re all as insanely excited as we are about the forthcoming LEGO Batman Movie. We’ve already been tantalized with hilarious trailers, the official sets, and a rather splendid new line of collectible minifigs that reveal some of the movie’s bizarre characters and alternate versions of the titular hero. Toryman has built this charming living room around the Lobster-Lovin’ Batman minifigure:

While considerably more modest that the digs we’ll see in the movie, this version certainly measures up with its oversized fireplace, wine collection, very very dark grey coffee table, and tasteful red furnishings. Just the ticket for wandering about in a robe and gnawing on some lobster after a hard day’s crime fighting.

While we count down the days until the movie’s release on February 10th, TBB staff are working round the clock to try and crack the mystery behind the digits 07734. Like a true nature’s child

This fantastic minifig-scale LEGO motorcycle was built for a contest for the German LUG ‘Imperium der Steine’. The task was to build a motor vehicle from a movie or TV show. Ben Tritschler chose the John Travolta movie Wild Hogs (or as it’s known in Germany, Born to be Wild ) This bike is very reminiscent of the motorcycles used in the film, provided by Harley-Davidson. Simple techniques have been used to create the uneven and cracked road with fantastic effect, the flowering cacti dotting the desert drive look great. But by far, though, the best part usage goes to the Shark Guy’s arm as the bike seat.

Punch when you have to punch, kick when you have to kick

Fan builders have certainly come up with some creative uses for LEGO’s balloon segment pieces. In his latest creation, Romanian builder Letranger Absurde has used the ones in set 70603 Ninjago Raid Zeppelin to create a very believable speed punch bag. Although by all accounts, getting this thing stay in one piece and in one place was so frustrating that I’m sure he was tempted to vent his frustration on it with his fists (…guessing it would have been good for exactly one punch).

Apart from what is obviously an amazing balancing act and an impressive amount of brick-built wall surface, what makes this build for me are the matte gold colored parts used to create the chain. If you look closely you’ll see a few Star Wars battle droid components in there! Although there’s a minor mystery here, as these parts don’t normally come in this finish.

Heading for victory with safety and comfort

It’s still more than 80 days before the next Formula One racing season starts, and the all-new racing cars are still scheduled to be revealed in February. In the meantime, let’s have a look at a vehicle that stays behind the scenes, but still helps drivers make their way to the finish flag. Ryan Link, a huge Ferrari fan, surprises us with a LEGO version of the iconic Scuderia Ferrari transporter. I bet the scene below will instantly remind many of our readers of the legendary 2005 set 8654 Scuderia Ferrari Truck, which was absolutely cool. Unlike the trailer in that set, all of the signage on Ryan’s one is brick-built, from the diagonal stripes to the Ferrari logo at the back!

Even rodents look cute when they are LEGO rodents

Did you know that there are 25 species of hamster? Actually, there are 26 now that Felix Jaensch has built the LEGO hamster. This is an ideal pet for anyone who is short on time and space to dedicate to their animal buddy. This little creature appears to be waiting for something, perhaps a few more studs to store in its cheek pouches. Felix’s cute version must be a close cousin of the dwarf hamster with its grey and white colouring. Those little pink paws and matching nose seem to help capture some of the cute appeal of a hamster, given their close relationship to mice and rats ugh!

I feel that this hamster will get up to mischief unless Felix builds it an endlessly turning wheel and some hamster toys to play with.
