Charming beach house with a modern flair

Just one look at any of Sarah Beyer‘s wonderful LEGO house models and it is crystal clear that she has a passion for modern architecture, from the use of large window panels to the delightfully detailed interiors found on every house she builds. This latest warm and inviting beach house is full of interesting part usages, as well as a thoughtful eye toward creating flowing spaces that don’t feel cramped, despite their minimal size. Just one of the details that I love about this house is the use of the textured brick, both inside and outside, to bring visual interest to an otherwise plain white wall.

LEGO Ideas 40335 Space Rocket Ride gift with purchase [Review]

Back in January 2018, the LEGO Ideas team held a competition themed around LEGO moments in space open to all builders, to unleash their creative talent. The winner of the contest would have his or her set made into a gift with purchase set. Nearly a year and a half later, we get to see the official set in its final form, with touchups from the LEGO design team, all packaged up and ready to be enjoyed by fans all over the world. The inspiration behind the design is the old-school rocket rides that one would find in storefronts and malls in just about every country.

Samurai mech: The ultimate upgrade

There are a handful of builders who consistently produce spectacular creations; Eero Okkonen is one of them. This time out he’s turned his attention to a reimagining of the classic 2012 Ninjago set 9448 Samurai Mech. It’s quite the upgrade! The official LEGO set is a little clunky and disproportioned, but in contrast Eero has designed a tough giant of a mech, which cleverly integrates the key aesthetic elements of the original, such as the gold stomach ring and katana blade. It’s however in the detailed building of the mech’s head, which utilises an array of black macaroni tubes and specialised elements to create its demonic features, that we see a master-builder lift his model out of the ordinary.

Bricks make for a great blocky robot

Inspired by the robotic mascot of MAKE Magazine, LEGO builder Omar Ovalle got down to some making of his own — resulting in a supercute retro-styled robot. The stripped-back colour scheme perfectly reflects the inspiration, with details added through judicious use of cut electrical tape. I love this thing’s chunky 50s-era blockiness. I want to see an army of these robots marching in synchronisation out of the airlock on a Soviet moonbase.

Plague Doctor Batman has the cure for what ails you

When Bob Kane and Bill Finger created Batman 80 years ago, they established rules for what he can be. While still following those same basic guidelines, other artists and writers can reimagine Batman with a myriad of possibilities. There has been a Samurai Batman, Robo-Batman, Viking Batman, even an adorable Fairy Batman thanks to The LEGO Movie 2. In the hands of Revan New, we have a fully posable Plague Doctor Batman. Fantastic details abound from the bat-winged trench coat to the brass buckles to the bit of medieval medical equipment in his hand.

The pièce de résistance, however, is his brimmed hat and the arcane bird-like mask worn by actual plague doctors in the 1600s. Revan uses a Harry Potter sorting hat to replicate the bird beak shape, a feature best viewed in this portrait.

Wile E. Coyote is the symbol of never giving up in anything you do...

If there’s the one time that I’m rooting for the bad guy, it’s Wile E. Coyote. He works so hard in all his traps and thingamajigs but the Road Runner not only always eludes and avoids them, but manages to make the contraptions work against poor Mr. Coyote. They don’t make TV cartoons like they used to, and this build by Chris Goddard brings back tons of memories. The Technic ball joints that make up Wile E. Coyote’s eyes popping out of his sockets describe his everlasting hunger and passion to never give up hope and to always keep trying

A curve inside a spaceship

There are many ways to build curved forms from the humble brick – some more imaginative than others. Take a close look Didier Burtin’s Interplanetary Cruiser and you’ll spot a unique one. The interior docking station has a beautifully bowed shape, formed from two 32 x 16 blue baseplates held under tension. Despite the obvious frustration this must have caused Didier during the building phase, it was clearly worth it, giving his creation an unexpected and individual look.

Viewed from the rear, not only do you see the lovely thrusters that you’d expect on a spaceship this size, but also further evidence of the builder’s skill. A range of visible hinged plates clearly show how the model’s structure absorbs the stress created by the flexed plates.

Cargo mech brings all the boys to the yard

This purple beast isn’t just your average cargo lifter. It’s a mean, lean, hefting machine. I mean, just look at that third arm! Markus Rollbühler, a frequently featured builder on The Brothers Brick, treats us again with his latest mech creation. The level of detail is, as usual. incredible. I really like the light on the mech’s left side and the vent features next to the cockpit. The mech’s carrying capacity is only possible, however, thanks to at least eight small ball and socket joints.

I’m sure this mech could definitely beat down anything from Alien.

A streetcar named Dystopia

Get your ticket for a cable car ride to the apocalypse in this dystopian future scene by Hellboy.lego. Your final stop is Catastrophe St. & Devastation Blvd. where trouble awaits around every corner!

The things I most appreciate about this scene are the little stories spread throughout. An intrepid traveller embarks at his stop and finds himself in dangerous surroundings. A madman protects his arsenal of garbage, while a shadowed figure lurks in a corner just waiting to relieve unsuspecting tourists of their possessions. Peril also comes from above in the form of a gun toting survivalist on the roof, looking for an opportunity to strike.

There are even spiders and a couple of baby dinos thrown in for good measure! I also love the overgrown look, accomplished using a wide variety of plant pieces in different shapes and colors. The organic palette of the foliage and crumbling gray building facade create a nice color contrast to the excellently built tan and blue cable car. The cracked and broken pavement is not only a great detail, it also breaks the straight line of the base, adding to the overall decrepit feeling of the scene.

LEGO Lambo is even rarer than the real thing

If you don’t have a spare $1.9m lying around then chances are you missed out on picking up a Lamborghini Centenario back in 2017. Can’t live without this stunning vehicle? Well, take a leaf out of Lennart C‘s book and build your own LEGO version. Although Lamborghini only manufactured forty of the Centenario, this model has the advantage of being even rarer, yet considerably cheaper. The build has all the trappings of the real thing, with its smart grey paint job offset by bright yellow flashes, and those wonderful doors. And just like the real thing, the ground clearance on this bad boy is rubbish — so watch out for any speed bumps!

The ultimate crossover anime movie of the century, if it ever happens

If the right copyright holders ever found a way to collaborate, any movie featuring this legendary trio would probably be an instant blockbuster hit. The Gundam RX-78-2, Voltron, and Optimus Prime all in a single scene saving the world is what Tom Vanhaelen teases us with. I found it quite delightful how Voltron was sized down tremendously from its official LEGO Ideas Voltron set using some of the printed parts and looks like a medium-sized model of its larger cousin.

Matt Damon is going to science the bleep out of this

The first and only thing that came to mind when I set eyes on this space colony was Matt Damon.
The Martian is a movie starring Matt Damon. who’s stuck on Mars and is forced to find a way to feed himself or face death. Jon Blackford’s Hydroponics Research & Development Facility looks like a page pulled right out of the potential sequel to author Andy Weir’s The Martian — mass production of food to sustain a colony.
