I’m not sure who’s who in this duel by Grant Masters, let alone who is going to win. From the striking poses to the top knots in their hair, these expressionless faceless combatants belong in a Kurosawa film. Superb lighting and novel use of slopes give these graceful figures fighting stances a natural hanging clothing effect. Could this represent a battle between good and evil, the struggle between Yin and Yang, or the clash of East versus West? Who knows…
At first look, these flowers by Theo Guilia look rather nice. They are made from LEGO but nothing too strange or odd about their appearance from afar. The reality is that they are both made up of parts that would not be a first choice for creating a flower in the hands of most builders. The sunflower petals are bananas, the central portion of the sunflower is an afro hairpiece and the leaves are a mix of elf hats and green frogs. It sounds more like a recipe for witch’s brew than the parts to build a LEGO sunflower!
The second flower is a pretty blue cornflower. It uses Bart Simpson’s head as the central portion of the flower with the old-style plastic capes as petals. Those elf hats make another appearance as leaves to complete the flower. How strangely effective.
LEGO certainly brings out the creativity in people. I’ll never look at an elf hat the same way again…
With Rogue One dominating the news, we wanted to highlight that LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures, Season One is now available on DVD and Blu-ray.
For those of you unfamiliar with the popular Disney XD show, The Freemaker Adventures is about a ragtag band of rebels tracking down a mythical lightsaber while the Empire goes about building the second Death Star brick by brick. In typical LEGO humor, expect to see cameos from all around the Star Wars universe, Palpatine’s gift shop, baby wampas, Buffy the Vampire Slayer meta-references, and a George Lucas lookalike named “The Maker” who’s gone into seclusion because he’s tired of space wars.
The DVD and Blu-ray sets are both available at Amazon on sale for around $25 — a steal for five hours of quality entertainment.
Imagine Rigney has been combining his love of LEGO and retro-scifi video game Bioshock for years. The Brothers Brick first covered his impressive entrance to the underwater city of Rapture in 2011, and in 2014 Imagine’s breathtaking Bank of the Prophet from Bioshock Infinite amazed us with its stunningly huge songbird perched above the floating city.
Well, we weren’t the only ones who noticed Imagine’s incredible talent — Bioshock developers 2K Games have also been keenly following his brick-built fan art. Recently, 2K contacted Imagine and asked him to build a brick version of the cover art for their remastered edition of the Bioshock games, Bioshock: The Collection. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Imagine set to work, and has turned out this jaw-dropping collage of Bioshock imagery.

While our sympathies here at TBB lie with the Rebellion, we acknowledge that this milestone just might make us the Death Star of LEGO blogs. It’s all very confusing for us, so here’s a Death Star that’s also a BB-8 in TBB colors giving a thumbs up. Director Krennic’s Death Troopers are as intimidating as they look in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. This elite armor design comes to life in LEGO bricks with a wearable helmet constructed by YouTuber Spencer Hubert. Spencer utilizes techniques I used on my LEGO Halo helmet for the dome on top, and the results are instantly recognizable. I love how insane and magical this whale island by Delayice is. The rounded shapes, which are notoriously hard to capture with LEGO bricks, are done perfectly. What I love the most are the colourful trees peeking from behind the mountain and the waterfall flowing off of the whale. The builder does not provide any information on the inspiration, but I could easily imagine this creature in a fairytale or an anime.
Don Wilson has brought us a spaceship with an unusual triangular configuration. The “Watchdog Fightercraft” started focused on a single piece – the larger yellow ones forming the “mandibles” – and the build evolved from there.
Two great aspects of the build which you can’t see from the angle above is the extremely detailed rear section. When the ship lands it does so with the cockpit pointed straight up, and the builder has accounted for this with a moving seat:
In a world of spaceships, castles and mecha it can be unclear that LEGO building is a form of art. This is why we have builders like Felix Jaensch, who remind us of the artistic potential of LEGO. The flowers are arranged perfectly with just enough imperfections to look natural. The only part that looks off to me are the leaves, but I do admit it is hard to make them look realistic.
Felix is well known for his simplistic style, mostly using only bricks and plates to accomplish complex shapes, with some of his best work featuring a life sized LEGO mummy, a blue and gold macaw and more recently a very cute red panda. If you like LEGO art, Felix is surely a builder you’ll want to follow.
This beautiful digital rendering of a Victorian dream home by buggyirk is something straight out of a Dickensian novel. Stunning stained-glass windows and lively gardens draw your eyes into this delicately decorated delight, a weather vane is perched atop the pointed roof of the tower, which complements the multi-gabled roof and lovely designs under the eaves.
Inside is where this model really shines, with masterfully styled Victorian furniture including a grandfather clock, bed, bookcase with candles, baby crib, fireplace and chandelier — each on its own enough to make me want to move in, but that incredible staircase is the icing on the cake. Like many homes, its heart is in the dining room where Mother, Father and Junior enjoy a happy brick-tricious meal together. I have never wanted to own a Victorian home so badly before today.
We’re continuing our adventure in the South Seas, after reviewing 41149 Moana’s Island Adventure, with the second set celebrating Disney’s Moana, 41150 Moana’s Ocean Voyage. This is the larger of the two, and retails for $39.99 USD, with 307 pieces.
