Even if you’re not an Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo gamer yourself, and even if you’ve never played one of the many LEGO games, it’s hard not to appreciate the strange and stunning LEGO creations inspired by video games. Look for lots of LEGO models inspired by Halo, the Legend of Zelda, Gears of War, Pokemon, Final Fantasy, and more. Game on!

Eggman, eggrobo, and the coveted green emerald!

A lot of LEGO fans probably wish LEGO Sonic was a real theme. As it is, we’re lucky that we even got a Sonic the Hedgehog minifigure from the Dimensions theme. On the bright side though, LEGO elements are a great medium to play around with when it comes to recreating characters and scenes from Sonic games and cartoons. Ivan Martynov demonstrates just that, with his brick-built Dr. Robotnik and Eggrobo.

Martynov’s builds definitely make use of a lot of technic elements and larger molded pieces. Dr. Robotnik’s signature glasses are depicted by teal round bar and pin holder 1x1s, while his egg shaped nose utilizes a pink bulb piece. Eggrobo’s gloved appearing hands make use of the shaft with hand element. Overall, given how unique and round these characters and their features are, Martynov does an excellent job rendering them with LEGO elements.

I am the future. The Tiberian Sun has risen!

Just like LEGO builder Gregory Coquelz, I was a huge fan of Commander & Conquer: Tiberian Sun when it debuted in 1999. So as soon as I saw this excellent pair of dioramas depicting GDI and Nod forces, I knew we had to feature them. First up is GDI with an iconic ore harvester sweeping through the fields of blue Tiberium Vinifera, accompanied by a Wolverine mech and a few soldiers. The diorama is simple, but it captures the bleak wastelands of the game. A blossom tree adds some interest (as well as a renewable source of Tiberium).

Of course, no C&C creation would be complete with the insane machinations of Nod, and so Gregory has also made an iconic scene with a Hand of Nod, along with a turret, buggy, and a few more soldiers. The broken road is a great touch, with the wedge plates fitting together perfectly to create the uneven edges. Continue reading →

LEGO celebrates 25th anniversary of LEGO video games with 10-part Bits N’ Bricks podcast [News]

December 2020 marks the 25th anniversary since the LEGO company’s first video game released. To celebrate the milestone, the company has produced a 10-part podcast series called Bits N’ Bricks that walk through the history of the plastic brick company’s foray into digital games, from Minecraft to LEGO Island and the LEGO Star Wars games, and everything in between. LEGO says they’ve been working on the show for more than a year, and have interviewed at least 120 people and researched more than 50 games in the course of production. The podcasts will be released weekly, with the inaugural episode launching today. The first episode is actually a teaser that’s not part of the main 10-part series, and along with a Christmas special in a few weeks, means the whole series will run for 12 weeks.

The podcast will be hosted by journalist Brian Crecente and documentarian Ethan Vincent. Crecente has a long history with video game journalism, having founded Kotaku and co-founded Polygon, and Vincent likewise has an impressive resume as an Emmy Award-winning documentary director for PBS.

LEGO reveals new Super Mario sets for 2021, bringing Tanooki, Wiggler, and more [News]

Today LEGO has taken the wraps off the second wave of its Super Mario sets, revealing five new sets and 10 new Series 2 blind bags that bring a host of new characters and locations to the build-it-yourself augmented reality game. Slated to hit store shelves starting January 1, 2021, the sets will still require the purchase of the original 71360 Adventures with Mario Starter Course US $59.99 | CAN $69.99 | UK £49.99, but bring new functionality to the game system with a variety of play features.

The Master Your Adventure Maker Set adds a yellow starter pipe that enables a time-challenge mode of play, where you’ll need to rush your Mario through the course as quickly as possible. Two new Power-Up suits for Mario are also coming to the mix: Penguin Mario, which will enable sliding, and Tanooki Mario for spinning. The new wave also introduces a new biome (in addition to the water (blue), fire (red), sand (yellow), and grass (green) from wave 1. The new poisonous Soda Jungle biome will be purple.

Space salvage done with style

Based on the iconic salvage tug from the computer video game Star Citizen, this model of the Drake Industries Vulture by Volker Brodkorb is a stunningly detailed replica of its on-screen inspiration. From the rotating engine modules to the forward prongs, loaded with juicy greebly bits, and an assortment of stickers.

This impressive model, built to minifig scale, even boasts some great interiors.

Bloodborne Hunters Dream

The game Bloodborne holds a very special place in the heart of Nathan Hake. It inspired him to make this LEGO Bloodborne Hunters Dream creation. The build took about a year to make and I can understand why. Hunters Dream is a location in Bloodborne. Also known as Dream Refuge, it is the place where the player goes after their first death and operates as a central hub, providing trade and upgrade services. The player can port from this location to any of the Lamps that they have activated.

More than a year later Nathan decides to remember his epic creation by making a micro-scale hunters dream and it is absolutely stunning. Not only is the building very recognizable. The whole ambiance of the big creation is well translated to the micro-scale build.

The (Pumpkin) Spice must flow

Don your Uggs and yoga pants as Pumpkin Spice season is upon us once again. But where do all those pumpkin spice lattes, lipgloss, scented candles, and dog shampoos come from? It’s probably all harvested by this creepy fellow constructed by Brothers Brick regular and LEGO builder extraordinaire Joss Woodyard. He tells us this is Pumpkinhead Fiddlesticks, a character from the game League of Legends which, upon further research, seems to have nothing to do with harvesting pumpkin spice. Well, there goes my humorous holiday tie-in! No one said we were good journalists, did they? Regardless of your opinions of my journalistic integrity, you’ll have to agree Joss is a pretty formidable builder. We offer a well-deserved pumpkin spice latte salute to all things Halloween and maybe you should too.

LEGO partners with Unity for LEGO Microgame, a platform for designing your own game with virtual bricks [News]

To celebrate its 25th anniversary, LEGO Games is partnering with Unity, the world’s leading 3D content development platform, to bring us a new videogame known as LEGO Microgame. Unity offers guided experiences designed to make game development less intimidating for new users, and starting October 26, you will be able to build your very own LEGO game, brick by virtual brick.

LEGO touts the new Microgame as being created with adult fans of LEGO in mind. It is targeted at people who are taking their first steps into the world of videogame creation and the company says it is designed to make this a fun and welcoming experience. You can even import your own creations built in Bricklink Studio as well as share the games you design on the Unity platform. At the time of writing, there’s not a huge amount we know about the gameplay itself yet, but you can check out a trailer for the game and read the official press release below.

Cue the monk music as you wield this LEGO Halo energy sword

It is only fitting to think about the Halo Gregorian chant as I look upon this amazing brick-built Covenant energy sword – a holy weapon wielded by the noble class of the Sangheili species, crafted by Nick Jensen. According to Nick’s specs, the sword is comprised of a whopping six pounds of LEGO bricks and is 41.5″ long. No adhesives such as tape or glue were used – talk about clutch power!

The inner portion of the blade of the energy sword is mostly comprised of clear-colored and light blue 1×2 trans-clear plates and 1×1 round tiles while the outer portion is made of trans-clear bricks and slopes in light blue, clear, and pink.

The handle is crafted out of a menagerie of bricks, tiles, dome-tops, and slopes in mostly blacks and greys with some trans-clear parts. Nick also smartly constructed a couple of stands to display this amazing work. It definitely must feel pretty empowering to hold this sword – even if it is only a model made of bricks. It looks almost exactly as I remember it from the games. The Master Chief’s weapons have got nothing on this beauty.

“It’s’a him – Mario!”

The new parts in the Super Mario sets are opening a whole new world of possibilities for LEGO fans’ creations. One new world that I’m particularly pleased to see, is Super Mario World, as built by Alex Saar.

While I suspect the new sets were the obvious inspiration for this creation, there’s only one piece from the new sets included. That one piece though, the printed Bullet Bill face, really ties the other brick built parts of the scene together with the theme. Maybe it’s just hitting me in the nostalgias really hard, but in my opinion, everything about this creation is pretty perfect. Whether it’s the perfect angles and dimensions on the large background objects, or the texture of the underground, or the way Mario is crouching just enough to look like the giant bullet will graze his head (but those who have played the game will know it’ll just miss him. And Mario himself, the boat tile is the perfect compressed hat, and the black rubber band works brilliantly for the little plumber’s hair and moustache!

I can almost hear the collective eye-roll of Nintendo fans everywhere when they read this title. While there can be no argument about who came first, Legolas is not the only blonde elf archer with a big fan base. This model by Brixter Productions shows Link, the daring hero of The Legend of Zelda video game franchise first released in 1986, stands ready to defend the Princess Zelda.

This version of Link is from 2017 The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and he’s fully armed and ready for anything. The tunic is very well-crafted with a minimum of parts, and his wind-blown hair is a nice touch.
