We all love a good LEGO Gundam or Macross mecha, but LEGO builders everywhere are also creating excellent models of their own designs. Have a look at them here.

Gundam grunt has a turn in the spotlight

Gundam mech designs are often covered in sharp angles, making it difficult to portray them in LEGO form. However, Derrick Li has done a fantastic job at recreating this GM mech from the Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt anime. Instead of going for a flat, plain visor, the green eye area protrudes out slightly in order to form a more circular shape for the head. The areas in dark turquoise are actually dark blue in the original design, but the color change in this model assists in accentuating the details of the torso.

The model also looks to be well articulated, and it comes equipped with a rifle and a beam saber. Macaroni pieces perfectly create the odd rounded feet of the mech.

“Megazord sequence has been initiated.”

As a child of the late 80’s, Power Rangers was my jam in elementary school. I spent countless afternoons building up spaceships and castles with LEGO while Jason and his team took on the baddies of Rita Repulsa in the background. Ergo, my nostalgia is cranked all the way up to 11 with this excellent Megazord build by naota5552000. While the sculpting and posability of this mech are well thought-out, I’m drawn to the excellent techniques used to make the Zord’s head. The intricate use of clips, bars, and plate corners really gets the job done on a two-stud square base!

This mechanical squid appears to be a fan of skiing

It might be difficult to add this one to a calamari dish. Mitsuru Nikaido has constructed an impressive version of a robotic squid in a black and white colour scheme. Flexible tubes and whip pieces represent cables along the outstretched limbs, adding to the mechanical aesthetic of the design. The squid’s tentacles are covered in a large amount of ski pieces which act as armor plating and are attached via droid bodies. The blank eyes of the creature are portrayed by tires and wheel rims. Being quite a large build, the model requires a stand which assists in conveying a sense that the creature is floating or is ready to glide through the water.

A mighty mech, using the smallest pieces!

You’d be mistaken for thinking we have a gargantuan LEGO build here from Cole Blaq.
Instead, we have an excellent example of what can be achieved using a selection of the smallest parts.
The feet show how versatile LEGO weapons can be and their various connection points too, used here to add a real mechanical look to the feet. I like the horn on the underside of the leg suggesting a hydraulic movement to mimic a natural crab-like crawl across the terrain!
The new 1×1 modified plate is also put to good use connecting the feet to the torso. From here, Cole has employed great knowledge of parts to complete his build adding subtle detailing with well-placed tiles in the design, along with a gas mask and the recent black minifig accessory add a nice touch to the head design of the mech. A mightily impressive smallscale build!

Grab the bug spray!

It’s been a few months since builder Oscar Cederwall gifted us with one of his LEGO creations. Everyone deserves a break and this winter has been particularly worthy, however his latest creation reminds us that summer is on its way with a vengeance. Thankfully the swarms of flies we’ll be dealing with won’t be quite as formidable as this Wisp Scout Tank. As usual, Oscar shows off his detailing skills with the greebly legs of this flying menace. The interesting wings are swords from the Exo Force Sky Guardian Mech from back in 2007. Though it might be the oddest piece amongst the build, the literal standouts are the bright blue Modulex pieces featured in the turrets. The contrast was both a design choice and a color limitation since, as Oscar puts it, “Modulex colors are a bit odd because they mostly don’t match any other LEGO System colors.” Thankfully they make for great accents on some already intricate turrets.

Walk softly and carry a big... utility pole

If you can imagine a more frightening sight wandering the wastelands of the apocalypse cleaning up survivors and parading around with their skulls swinging from its weapon, please, keep it to yourself. LEGO builder Tino Poutiainen had brought this sulking, multi-eyed monster mech to life. It reminds me a bit of the alien mech from District 9. The long gangly arms that end in large fists and the chunky lower legs add to the unnerving effect, not to mention the deadly daisy chain of skulls adorning his staff.

Is this mech an angel or a demon in disguise?

With an intimidating form, it’s hard to say whose side this mech would be on. Created by Keith Espinoza, the build has an angelic quality due to the wings. However, the dark colour scheme and assortment of weapons may suggest otherwise. The double bladed swords feature energy blast parts which represent crackling electrical beams. The wings make use of angled plate pieces to create the ring of wing segments attached to the back.

For long-range combat, the mech comes equipped with a rifle. The feet of the figure also have an intriguing design, with mechanical details in grey surrounded by black outlines. The model also has some fantastic articulation as it is able to strike a variety of dynamic poses.

The 3-in-1 Super Robot set gets an upgrade

If for some reason you were disappointed by the recent Super Robot Creator set, have no fear! Nobu Tary has constructed this large-scale version of the mech model. The build features more exaggerated proportions than the original, while maintaining a similar colour scheme. The head has a sharp pointed form, with the horns tucked in and represented by rounded tiles . The chunky boots even have hints of yellow, as seen in the Creator set, and spoiler pieces portray neat-looking ankle guards at the feet. Unfortunately, you can’t build this mech using just the parts found in the original set, but hopefully it will inspire fellow fans to recreate official sets in fun and interesting ways.

LEGO Marvel Superheroes 76219 Spider-Man & Green Goblin Mech Battle [Review]

The greatest foes in comic history are always two sides of the same coin. Peter Parker (aka Spider-Man) is a scientifically minded young man; an underdog driven to use his powers to responsibly serve his city. Norman Osborn (aka The Green Goblin) is something of a scientist himself; a billionaire who only craves more power, even at the expense of anyone who gets in his way. These two have been engaged in a constant struggle on the comic book page since the early 60s. Now LEGO is bringing their battle to toy shelves once again, this time arming each of them with a giant mech suit. Mechs for these two might seem weird at first glance, but both characters regularly rely on tech like web shooters and goblin gliders. So maybe this upgrade isn’t that far-fetched. Besides, putting Marvel characters into giant mechs seems to be a formula that’s working for LEGO. But does the success of the formula repeat itself here? Challengers beware! G Gundam is here!

The God Gundam is a mighty fighting machine from the anime, Mobile Fighter G Gundam, with this fantastic LEGO version of the mech built by Twilightsbrick. The model features proportions accurate to the original design and has the excellent addition of a multi-coloured energy ring. The chest even appears to have a light-up brick inside and matched with the splayed-out wing segments, indicating that this Gundam is about to unleash a powerful attack. The horns or “V fins” are represented by minifigure hands and yellow harpoons, which have previously only featured in diving sets from the late 90s, in that particular colour.

Meching the right moves

LEGO builder Marco Marozzi brings us this ironclad mech which is nearly all made of greys with just a touch of highlight colors, including the Ukrainian flag in support of their fight. The mech is a fine piece of work, capturing the rounded aesthetic that’s often seen in the Maschinen Krieger (Ma.K.) style. I particularly like the way the joint on the knee uses Technic liftarms to hold the ball rather than a standard ball joint receiver.

Fly, awesome mech, fly!

Blasting its way onto our screens, this mech is ready to lead the charge. Bushido Bots has created one tough-looking machine, armed with a staff and several gun turrets. The hints of red and gold, across a mostly white colour scheme, are reminiscent of the designs seen in classic mecha shows. A handlebar piece forms the outline around that piercing blue eye and on the back, there are also adjustable booster engines. It’s great to see a compact mech like this with so many intricate details.
