LEGO has been releasing sets based on Disney brands since 1999, including everything from Winnie the Pooh DUPLO sets to the massive Disneyland Castle for adult collectors. If there’s a new Disney or Pixar film hitting theaters or Disney Plus, chances are you can expect at least one new LEGO tie-in. Sets inspired by classic films like Snow White, Frozen and Moana have become a cornerstone of LEGO’s product lineup.

The LEGO 43222 Disney Castle celebrates 100 years of Disney [News]

After its predecessor 71040 Cinderella Castle was retired only six months ago, LEGO has announced the new 43222 Disney Castle as a part of their line of Disney100 sets released this year. Debuting later this summer, the castle features four Disney princess minifigures and their corresponding love interests: Rapunzel and Flynn Rider, Tiana and Prince Naveen, Snow White and Prince Florian, and Cinderella and Prince Charming. The back of the model is chock full of references to Disney’s 100-year history, spread throughout its many rooms and towers. This is the largest classic Disney set yet, clocking in at 4,837 pieces, beating the last castle by almost 800 pieces. The set will be available for VIPs starting on July 1st, with open access at LEGO stores and at LEGO.com on July 4th. To sweeten the pot for early shoppers, there is a gift-with-purchase titled Disney 100 Years Celebration (not pictured) available with select LEGO Disney purchases from July 1st through 9th. 43222 Disney Castle will take you well over that limit, retailing for US $399.99 | CAN $519.99 | UK £344.99

LEGO Ideas 21341 Hocus Pocus brings Disney’s famous witches to the brick [News]

Today LEGO has finally revealed the next upcoming Ideas set will be 21341 Hocus Pocus. Last August LEGO revealed that Belgian Fan Designer Amber Veyt‘s Hocus Pocus – Sanderson Sisters’ Cottage submission would become an official set after reaching the requisite 10k votes to be considered in October 2021. The new set will feature the Sanderson Sister’s Cottage, which opens to show the museum and witches’ home inside. Six minifigures will be included: the three Sanderson Sisters, Max, Danni, and Allison, along with Thackery Binx as a black cat. The set will contain 2,316 pieces and is slated to be available for LEGO VIP members starting July 1, with general availability following on July 4. It will retail for US $229.99 | CAN $299.99 | UK £229.99.

The very merriest of un-birthdays to you!

Hats off to LEGO builder Julius von Brunk for showcasing some mad skills with this Alice in Wonderland creation. The expression here conveys the perfect level of “manic,” thanks in large part to a liberal use of curved slopes and round tiles. But of course the best feature of any madcap milliner has got to be his hat, and Julius comes through with an exquisite chartreuse chapeau! The seamless integration of the 4×6 curved double-wedge is enviable, and the trademark “10/6” on its price sticker includes the ingenious use of some minifigure accessories to replicate the black numbers.

LEGO 43227 Disney Villain Icons celebrates the characters we love to hate [Review]

LEGO and Disney have a supercharged set lineup this year for Disney’s 100th anniversary, and LEGO 43227 Villain Icons is the second 18+ set targeted at adults after the Royal Clamshell. The “Adults Welcome” range is much more about who the set is aimed at and marketed to than about LEGO’s traditional age ranges. We concluded that 76391 Hogwarts Icons set was a great introduction to the LEGO hobby for new adult builders. This set is obviously similar, and Disney is one of the few fandoms that significantly outnumbers Harry Potter, so it’s reasonable to guess this will be a big hit. Does it rise to that potential? LEGO 43227 Villain Icons, with 1,540 pieces and 4 villainous minifigures, will be available starting June 1st for US $129.99 | CAN $169.99 | UK £124.99.

LEGO Disney 43217 ‘Up’ House – Adventure awaits! [Review]

There is no denying that one of the most beloved Disney Pixar movies of all time is ‘Up’ – and with good reason. The sweet story about a grumpy old man fulfilling a promise to his late wife and instead finding himself in his own adventure with new friends tugs on your heartstring. It reminds us that life doesn’t always go according to plan, but wonderful things can still come of it. Because of all this, it couldn’t be a better candidate for LEGO to celebrate on Disney’s 100th anniversary. So come along for the ride as we tour inside LEGO Disney 43217 ‘Up’ House. This 598 piece set will be available April 1st, retailing for US $59.99 | CAN $79.99 | UK £49.99.

LEGO reveals sets for Disney 100th anniversary, including Minifigures, ‘Up’ House, and more [News]

2023 brings Disney’s 100th anniversary, and LEGO is celebrating with a series of sets branded with the Disney100 logo featuring scenes from classic Disney and Pixar movies, ranging from Oswald the Rabbit and Pinocchio to Mickey from Fantasia. One of the five sets, BrickHeadz 40622 Disney 100th Celebration, is already available, and the others will roll out over the next few months. The biggest news today is the reveal of the new Collectible Minifigures series, which includes 18 unique characters, many of which have never before been available in minifigure form. A pirate’s ride for me!

I can practically smell the bromine water in this Pirates of the Caribbean LEGO build from Nicholas Goodman. This scene is a rather amazing recreation of the beginning of the Disneyland ride. This is a scene rarely focused on, given its relaxing ambiance when comparing it to the rest of the ride. Here, Nicholas gives us that anticipation of what’s to come on the other side of that dark tunnel, sparing no detail. The ride’s boat is spot on, but more impressive is the rest of the scene, like the old pirate’s cabin. I like the simple technique of just not pressing tiles down all the way to create the uneven roofing. The greenery wonderfully frames the path of the ride, and those little details like the ship’s tackle to the right are perfect. Those are the details that make a ride of this nature, and I love seeing it all captured in LEGO. It should be no surprise that this is my favorite Disney attraction!

New LEGO Disney BrickHeadz sets revealed including EVE and WALL•E [News]

Three new LEGO BrickHeadz sets appeared in LEGO Shop just yesterday. Covering some of the most successful Disney projects, the new sets bring six new characters in the fan-favorite format. All the new products will go on sale on March 1, and are not available for preorder yet.

That Mickey Mouse sculpture sure is swell

Builder Nobu_Tary did something LEGO couldn’t or maybe just didn’t. They created a Mickey Mouse sculpture using only unprinted LEGO bricks. The original design by LEGO featured printed parts for the eyes to create the expression. Nobu_Tary relied on half-round tiles to do that job. To be quite honest the simplicity of this build’s facial expression really suits the early basic yet classic Mickey Mouse design. I skipped out on the official LEGO set, but I would buy this in a heartbeat! They even managed to nail the iconic Mickey Mouse pose.

Now THIS is Halloween, Halloween, Halloween

We are fast approaching the spooky season, and there have been plenty of LEGO builds coming out to mark the occasion. One of my favorites has got to be this excellent The Nightmare Before Christmas construction by Martin Harris. Jack and Zero are both expertly crafted, the former looking wiry as all get out with skinny limbs and an oversized skeleton noggin. His prized pooch has got some ghoulishly good shaping, relying heavily on curved slopes in white to provide a proper flow to its form. But the star of the show for me has got to be the detail Martin put into those gravestones. Consisting of some gorgeous stonework textures, the slight eschew of these tombstones feels ever so Burton-esque! And the “1993” chiseled into the one on the right is an excellent Easter egg for fans of the Disney classic, which came out that year.

This LEGO Casa Madrigal from Disney’s Encanto really dances along

At this point, nothing from LEGO builder extraordinaire Paul Hetherington should really surprise me, and yet I was still blown away when I saw this recreation of Casa Madrigal from Disney’s Encanto. But not because it’s wonderfully detailed—although it is—but because unlike any of the other beautiful LEGO versions that I’ve seen, this one really dances along, just like the magical house in the movie.

Paul has packed the interior of the house with motors and mechanisms that cause the roof tiles to pulse in rhythm, the shutters and doors to open and close, and even the rain cloud to rock back and forth.

This Hades bust from Disney’s Hercules goes the distance!

Inaccuracies aside, I absolutely adore the Greek mythology/gospel mashup that is Disney’s Hercules! And NS Brick Designs wows us with this LEGO bust of Hades, the movie’s big baddie. The use of slopes here is excellent, giving the character an appropriate gaunt look. And the god’s fiery hair is an exquisite mess of transparent orange. I love the use of the molded skull piece as the clip on his toga – a great touch often overlooked on the character. And finishing it up with the beautiful pop of yellow from the immortal’s brilliant eyes, I can almost hear James Woods’s voice screaming at me about wearing Herc’s merchandise.
