Vibrant hulking Mobile Defense Tank

Jme Wheeler has created the MDTDX Fiona Far, which is meant as a re-imagining of the official LEGO set 7706 Mobile Defense Tank. The builder notes that they thought the set “had a lot of cool things going for it, but the actual build was flimsy and lacking a bit in substance”. Starting with that basic idea, Jme rebuilt the set from the ground up, including adding more flexibility in the form of four sets of movable caterpillar tracks to replace the original’s rubber treads.

A streetcar named LEGO

You may know them as trams, streetcars, or trolleys. But these seemingly old forms of public transport are increasingly being found in our cities and towns once more. San Francisco is famous for them, but Edinburgh, Sofia, Helsinki, Rome and many more cities have trams running through their streets. David FNJ has built a lovely dark red tram pulling into a small stop, decorated with a bench and some pretty flowers. The tram is beautifully shaped with lots of curves, and the builder has utilised a great combination of highlight colours in the form of Bright Light Orange and Medium Dark Flesh.

I’m not massively sold on the conical trees, but the little stop is a nice addition to set the scene while we wait for the next tram to arrive.

The gift you should not have opened

I understand it is rude not to open a birthday present, but there have to be exceptions, right? Especially when you get literal hell in a box as a gift! Jme Wheeler tells us an idea popped up in his mind and he just had to build it. He also notes that it is his first attempt at building a skull, and I must say it is indeed a great start. The lighting and subtle editing makes for a powerful image that may or may not carry a deeper meaning.

GONK, the power droid that just keeps going and going [Instructions]

Given his passion for recreating vintage Star Wars play sets in LEGO, it’s not a huge surprise to see French builder Eric Druon try his hand at recreating some classic Star Wars action figures too. And what better place to start than the beloved GONK power droid (especially given LEGO’s rather disappointing attempts to date). Over the years GONKs of various shapes, sizes and colors have been spotted shambling through the background in almost every corner of the Star Wars franchise, from the original movie trilogy to more recent animated shows and video games. But for his interpretation Eric has – not surprisingly – drawn inspiration from a 1st series 1977 Kenner action figure, which was modelled after the very first GONK ever to appear on screen, a rather snazzy blue number spotted at the Lars homestead.

As an added treat, Eric has also produced a short instructional video showing you how to build your very own little GONK! I for one plan to build an army of these. Especially since my original childhood GONK figure is now long gone (or possibly lost in a box somewhere in my garage).

Building by candlelight

At first glance this melting LEGO candle by Jonas Kramm looks like the real thing. The goopy drips of wax cling together perfectly, and the candlestick has the just the right amount of detailing. Nevertheless, I can’t help but wonder if this candle would look better in white – but what else can an Iron Builder do when forced to work with bright green Duplo squiggle bricks?

Custom Modular features amazingly detailed LEGO store sprawling across 3 floors

Malaysian builder Shirley Yoong brings us this amazing Modular-style LEGO store. Built with a yellow and black theme, it features an almost classical Art Deco grand facade. It feels as though it were a residence, such as an apartment building, now transformed into a modern store with steps leading up to the front entrance. Consisting of approximately 3,000 bricks, it’s sized to be placed amongst the official LEGO Modular series like Assembly Square, and the builder says it took roughly a month to design.

It’s not just a pretty facade, though. The interior is packed from top to bottom with details.

It’s a BrickHeadz jungle out there

The animal suit characters from LEGO’s Collectible Minifigures line have proven to be highly popular and rather hard to find. The result: many crumpled blind packs left in every retail case, due to heavy violation by human fingertips in search of a pig- or chicken-suited minifigure. Jared Chan decided to stop looking and build his own – in a slightly different scale. And thanks to Jared’s talents they look just as cute in Brickheadz form. My favorite? Lizard Suit Guy on the rampage! I really hope Jared works on the rest of the suit family members, just to satisfy our completionist needs.

Who are we without our bricks?

This is a question we all ask ourselves every now and then, but members of a Russian LUG took it a step further and built their life with and without the precious brick for a recent LUG building challenge. Over on the shelf, we see that Timofey Tkachev‘s home would probably be filled with a mineral collection if he didn’t have his LEGO hobby. On the right we can see what Timofey guesses his apartment would like without LEGO to keep him grounded. There are lots of clever details to see on both sides, like the carpet’s edge and the LEGO shop bag nearly out of frame. The figure also references the builder’s previous creation, where we can compare what the builder fancies he’d look like with or without ABS.

There are many forms of thirst

Generally, LEGO builders strive to avoid blocky, repetitive designs. And, of course, many of us cringe at the mere thought of large patches of exposed studs. But Loysnuva fully embraced these little-favoured styles in his latest creation, and the result is simply mesmerizing! These sand dunes have an almost pixilated quality to them that works wonderfully.

My initial thoughts about this LEGO scene had nothing to do with Bionicle (which is the actual source material). Instead, I imagined a sci-fi world where robots roamed computer-generated deserts. And let me tell you, I immediately wanted to know more about that world.

Palutena’s Heavenly Light shines upon thee

Eero Okkonen showcases his excellence in LEGO character building once again with his build of the goddess Palutena of the Kid Icarus and Super Smash Bros series. Eero first constructed Palutena back in 2015 but his new version is quite a beautiful improvement on a great build. The flow to her green hair and variety of gold embellishments are eye-catching.

12-foot-long LEGO Golden Gate Bridge is realistically suspended

Microscale architecture builder Rocco Buttliere has achieved a remarkable feat of LEGO engineering with his 40,000+ piece model of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California. Like the actual suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate strait, Rocco’s beautiful and highly detailed LEGO rendition crosses its 6 foot long central span suspended by a combination of red string, Technic bushings, LEGO flexible hoses, and non-LEGO metal wire.

Rocco’s LEGO model even includes the buildings and landscaping of the Presidio in Golden Gate Park.

Come along and sing a song, and join the Mech Army

We’ve seen Disney-themed LEGO mecha before, but Julius von Brunk takes it to another level with this fearsome war machine piloted by everyone’s favourite corporate icon. Bristling with weapons, and stuffed full of attitude, Mickey’s newest ride is one intimidating hunk of junk.

I love the black greebling in the arms and legs, and the red shorts and heavy yellow feet are obvious highlights. But it’s the twin sensor arrays above the cockpit that lend this mech its signature style. Don’t miss this view of the famous pilot, nestled into his cockpit, sinister grin and thousand yard stare in full effect…
