LEGO Batman Movie 70906 The Joker Notorious Lowrider [Review]

When I reviewed The LEGO Movie nearly three years ago, I wrote, “Forget Ben Affleck, I want Will Arnett as the next Batman.” With The LEGO Batman Movie hitting theaters on February 10, 2017, I’ll finally be getting my wish. Our friends at LEGO HQ sent us all of the new LEGO Batman sets, and we’ll be bringing you reviews of as many as we can over the coming days. Several of the sets have already hit stores ahead of the holidays, so we’ll start with those.

First up, 70906 The Joker Notorious Lowrider includes 433 pieces and 3 minifigures for $49.99.

`

While it remains to be seen whether Joker’s Lowrider will ultimately be considered “notorious,” read our full review for our thoughts on this new set.

A boatload of interesting details in this LEGO Castle gatehouse

Most of the LEGO castles we’ve featured here on The Brothers Brick lately have started to all look the same — messy rockwork, roofs akilter, and plant life that looks like it’s going to strangle you if you look at it wrong. Greek LEGO builder Giorgos Solomonidis has gone a different direction, placing a pair of Viking boat hulls atop his gatehouse as its roof, and embellishing the wall with studs-out paneling rather than just messy brickwork. The windows built from hinge bricks are a particularly nice touch.

Battle on Rhen Var from Star Wars: Battlefront recreated with 250,000 LEGO bricks

The classic Star Wars video game Battlefront comes to life in this enormous diorama by Markus. Markus spent 10 months assembling 250,000 bricks and LEGO Star Wars minifigs into a diorama that measures 2.5 x 1.5 meters (8.2 x 5 feet). Unlike many of the all-white Hoth dioramas we’ve featured here over the years, the patchy snow results in a bit more texture against the underlying rock.

Motorized LEGO M4A2E8 Sherman “Easy Eight” tank from Fury [Video]

Most LEGO Sherman tanks we’ve featured here on The Brothers Brick over the years have been smaller minifig-scale versions, like the 1/35 Brickmania Sherman tank that’s inspired so many others (my own included). In contrast, Tommy Styrvoky has followed up his 1/18-scale motorized LEGO Sherman “Crab” tank with one inspired by the movie Fury.

The only thing missing from this LEGO sauna is some naked Finns

Finnish builder Heikki Mattila has built the essential Finnish social space from LEGO — a wonderfully tranquil sauna. Paneled in wood with a stove heating up the rocks, I like to imagine that this sauna sits in a little cabin by a lake, the cool water ready to embrace one’s fiery body.

Sauna

One of my favorite details is actually outside the sauna — a birch tree with a bird box glimpsed through the window.

Fly the friendly space-lanes aboard the R-9A Arrowhead

LEGO Friends minidolls don’t often get to blast through outer space aboard sleek, heavily armed ships with massively overpowered engines, but MiniGray! has amended that oversight with the R-9A Arrowhead. Vaguely reminiscent of a Taiidan gunship from Homeworld, the ship is striking in white with spots of aqua and red with machinery details in gray and black.

Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but unconquering whale!

It’s been many years since I last attempted to conquer Herman Melville’s masterpiece Moby Dick, and it haunts me to this day. And when I spy that inscrutable thing again on a shelf, to the last page I shall grapple with it. Japanese builder aurore&aube (aurore&aube) has conquered the white whale in LEGO form, with Moby Dick ascending from the deep to harry Captain Ahab and the Pequod. Using wedges and curved slopes, the builder has captured the essential shape of the sperm whale, Physeter macrocephalus. The red interior of his open maw is a lovely touch.

白鯨 010

Oddly perhaps, Moby Dick is a popular subject of LEGO models. Don’t miss Captain Ahab being dragged into the deep by Letranger Absurde and Ryan Rubino’s white whale battling a giant squid.

Announcing TBB’s history of LEGO + updated glossary [News]

Did you know that LEGO finally stopped making wooden toys in 1960 when the wooden toy warehouse burned down? What year did LEGO release its first minifigure? When did From Bricks to Bothans start? What in the sacred name of Ole Kirk Christiansen was Galidor? If you’ve ever wanted answers to these and other key questions of 20th-century and early 21st-century world history, you need look no further than The Brothers Brick’s new history of LEGO & the LEGO fan community page.

375 Yellow Castle

The page starts in 1932 and is up to date through the end of 2016, though we’re confident that there are a lot of important dates and events we’ve missed along the way. We’ll be adding more information based on your feedback and as we uncover more sources like Dave Eaton‘s “AFOL History Project.”

We’ve also updated and expanded our LEGO dictionary of AFOL jargon, with double the entries of the previous version, including entries for the commonly used names for lots of parts and building techniques.
