Absolutely Riddikulus!

Ekjohnson1 shows us that even though LEGO did their best, a good figure can always be improved. The figure in the spotlight is the second edition of the Snape Boggart from the Harry Potter franchise. Although LEGO did a splendid job on creating this figure, it didn’t fully capture the description in the books:

“You will raise your wand — thus — and cry ‘Riddikulus’ — and concentrate hard on your grandmother’s clothes. If all goes well, Professor Boggart Snape will be forced into that vulture-topped hat, and that green dress, with that big red handbag.”

The builder has added the green dress and topped the hat off with a crow, formerly of the Scarecrow CMF. Placing said figure in a well lit diorama complete with a brick built wardrobe and a quite easy yet effective chandelier using the knob wheel and some small flames, makes for one stellar shot.

LEGO Art mosaic 31201 Harry Potter Hogwarts Crests [Review]

When we reviewed 31199 Marvel Studios Iron Man from the first wave of the new LEGO Art mosaic sets a few months ago, we talked about LEGO’s long history with mosaics, going all the way back to 1955. Despite being a considerably different build experience from the typical LEGO set, mosaics have enduring popularity, and LEGO is determined to keep up with that market, as the second wave of Art mosaic sets has already been revealed. Two new sets are launching January 1, 2021, from the Wizarding World and Disney franchises. Today we’re looking at the first of those sets, 31201 Harry Potter Hogwarts Crests, which will retail for US $119.99 | CAN $149.99 | UK £114.99 and includes 4,249 pieces. The set includes pieces to build the crests for any one of the four Hogwarts houses, and four copies of the set can be combined to build a giant Hogwarts School crest.

The LEGO Group provided The Brothers Brick with an early copy of this set for review. Providing TBB with products for review guarantees neither coverage nor positive reviews.

Next LEGO Art mosaics revealed as 31201 Harry Potter Hogwarts Crests & 31202 Disney’s Mickey Mouse [News]

Today we’re getting our first look at the second wave of LEGO Art sets, thanks to European toy retailer Van Der Meulen. Expected to debut in January 2021, the pair of new sets are 31201 Harry Potter Hogwarts Crests and 31202 Disney’s Mickey Mouse. The sets follow on the heels of the first wave of LEGO Art sets which were released in September featuring Star Wars, The Beatles, Andy Warhol, and Iron Man (which we reviewed). Like those sets, the two new mosaics include the pieces for multiple designs. The Harry Potter set has 4,249 pieces and can build each of the four Hogwarts house crests, though only one at a time. Brickset reports that four copies of the set can also be combined to create the Hogwarts crest, though we don’t have any images of that at this time. Similarly, the Mickey Mouse set has two options for either building Mickey or Minnie and we presume they can also be combined in some way. This set contains 2,658 pieces.

There’s no word on the price yet. The previous four sets each cost $120 USD and contained around 3,250 pieces, so we’ll have to see if the new sets keep the same price point with the Hogwarts one having considerably more pieces and the Disney one a lot fewer.

LEGO just revealed the Harry Potter 76382 Hogwarts Moment: Transfiguration Class playset on its online store listing. It features a brick-built book opening to unveil the scene within. It comes with 241 pieces and 3 minifigures featuring Professor McGonagall, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. 3 other similar designed books are slated to be released as a complete collection. Priced at USD 29.99 and slated for release on January 1st 2021.

What a charming charmed tent!

One of the things in the Harry Potter universe that always caught my attention was the charmed tents. Nothing as magical as 3 people entering a really small tent to discover that it is very spacious on the inside. Caleb Schilling takes this setting and gives us the Quidditch World Cup scene where the Weasley family camps in a borrowed charmed tent during the sport event. The tent is made of fabric, which is really hard to create with a hard plastic construction toy. However, Caleb managed to make the flowing fabric feel come across quite beautifully thanks to the round wall, patterns on all the walls, and the curtains hanging from the ceiling. The tent has everything a family needs to camp in comfort: beds, couches, chairs, tables, a heating stove, and even a rug with fringe!

Hut on the rocks

In an iconic early scene from the first Harry Potter book, poor uncle Vernon finally cracked when a veritable flood of letters came pouring down the chimney. He had the entire family leave the house to try and prevent contact from Hogwarts. However, upon staying in a gloomy hotel, he was shocked to see letters turn up there even. Eventually, he took his whole family to a hut on a small rock on the sea. This creation by gaylespiller, although not entirely “movie-accurate,” really manages to capture the scene perfectly in LEGO. The hut itself is made out of a brown framework built from bricks with a stud on one side. The gaps in this framework are filled in with brick tiles and plates of all sorts, creating an old, crooked, and weathered look.

Harry holds on for dear life

We’ve all seen plenty of LEGO models showing minifig-scale scenes from the Harry Potter books and movies, so it was quite surprising to see Joffre Bricks come up with a wonderfully whimsical take on the flying car scene from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Using just a few simple plates with clips for the arms, and a very blocky style for the car takes nothing away from this delightful depiction. And while the round white plates with a center hole may be perfect for Ron’s bulging eyes, Harry’s giant terror-filled eyes are pure genius.

What do you require?

LEGO builder Pedro Sequeira takes us back to one of the most memorable moments in Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows. Harry’s last return to Hogwarts starts off in one of the most unusual locations on Hogwarts grounds, the Room of Requirement.

It’s the place Lord Voldemort used to hide one of his Horcruxes while applying for the job of Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. The place where Draco Malfoy spent the majority of his sixth year, fixing the Vanishing Cabinet, in order to smuggle death eaters into the castle to help him assassinate Dumbledore. The place Professor Trelawney attempted to hide her sherry bottles. And last but not least, the place where Dumbledore’s Army could safely meet. At least that’s what they thought.

So of course, a LEGO build of it should capture as much of this history as it can. And indeed, this build is filled with fantastic details. Everything you need is there, from the portrait swinging open to reveal our heroes, to the makeshift beds and hammocks everywhere, to Nigel’s potterwatch radio setup and even the columns with the glass and wood display cases.

Troll in the castle

Ethan Johnson is not only a really gifted LEGO builder, he is also an expert when it comes to adding light to his creations. His troll in the castle creation shows how adding light to LEGO creations brings them to life! And I am not talking about setting up a nice lightbox to take pictures of your LEGO creation. I am talking about adding actual functional lights to the creation itself.

Not only the lighting is excellent, but the creation itself is also very nice. Just look at those brick-built toilet booths and the little niffler playing hide and seek. LEGO Harry Potter has been around for quite some time now. Some characters and creatures got redesigned along the way. Some characters and creatures, however, did not. Sometimes a redesign is long due; sometimes an old figure still works perfectly fine, sometimes an old figure just needs to be spruced up a little bit with some new accessories and needs to be positioned just right so you do not see that there is a small plastic bridge between its legs.
