Croatian LEGO fansite Kockice.hr has announced their annual Brickstory contest, and they’re throwing it open to everyone. The four themes this year are Greatest Inventions, Ancient Civilizations, The History of Art, and One Moment in Time. Those are pretty broad categories, and they’re looking for a lot of different interpretations. There are also some nice prizes on the line, with 9 total winners.

Incredible LEGO model of the Titanic breaking in half
Ryan McNaught is a professional LEGO model builder, and there’s absolutely no question about his building skills when he produces models like this or a life-sized Tardis. The breathtaking scene of the final moments of the Titantic show its stern lifted high in the air, the vessel splitting under its own weight before sinking over two miles to the sea floor. Supporting the significant weight of the ship’s stern through the thin connection in the ship’s keel is an incredible feat of LEGO engineering.

The nightly visitor you didn’t want: Crimson Peak’s Lady Sharp
Guillermo del Toro’s latest film, Crimson Peak, is hauntingly beautiful and more than a bit freaky. The movie is awash in bold contrasting tones of black, white, and red, and none moreso than the palpably creepy specter of Lady Sharp. Tyler Halliwell’s terrific bust stays true to the apparition’s viscerally gruesome crimson visage.

Series 15 of LEGO’s incredibly popular Collectible Minifigures line is starting to hit stores. We’ve already done a full in-depth Series 15 minifigure review, so here we’ll just cover the important things you’ll want to know when standing in the store with your fingers on a blind pack.

Olivia’s all deadly curves
Builder Jarek has already proven himself to be a master of hard angles and flat planes with his incredible Star Destroyer, but now he’s shaking things up with this stunning character, named Olivia the Swordmaiden. Jarek makes excellent use of the new balloon panels and lots of curved bricks and slopes for a result that looks ripped straight from the pages of a sci-fi concept art book.
A Fixed System: A LEGO film that makes you think
We don’t often feature brick films on Brothers Brick; partly because that’s not where our interests lie, and partly because it’s a lot more time consuming to discover new content. Sometimes though, a brick film jumps out as worthwhile. Such is the case with A Fixed System by Aaron Fisher.
We find here the tale of an Everyman awash in a rote life as a brick factory worker, who would have fit right in with Emmett during the beginning of The LEGO Movie. I won’t spoil what happens when he decides to look for more in life, but I will say it provides an interesting subject upon which to muse. And like much good art, it provides a platform upon which the viewer’s own beliefs and worldview are highlighted and questioned.
The animation is strong in this 10-minute movie (a frequent failing of brick films) and the facial expressions and soundtrack tell the story excellently in this silent film.
9 projects qualify for final 2015 LEGO IDEAS crowdsourcing round [News]
LEGO has announced the finalists for the third and last 2015 review round from their crowdsourcing platform, LEGO IDEAS. To qualify, each project had to garner 10,000 votes on the IDEAS website. Being a finalist means LEGO will take a serious look at turning the project into an official LEGO set. It does not, however, guarantee that the project will definitely be created into a set. Generally LEGO selects a single project to move forward to set design, though sometimes none of the finalists make the cut. The IDEAS platform has brought us a wide variety of sets, from The Big Bang Theory, to Birds, to the recently released Doctor Who set.
- Jurassic Park Explorer
- 20.000 Leagues under the Sea NAUTILUS
- Toyota Landcruiser 40 Series
- Beatles Yellow Submarine
- HMS Beagle
- Apollo 11 Saturn-V
- Concorde Display Set
- National Park Service Centennial Vignettes
- Victorian London Christmas
2015’s second review round is still pending, though an announcement is expected early this year.
Nexo Knights 70331 Ultimate Macy and 70332 Ultimate Aaron [Review]
LEGO’s new Nexo Knights line has launched and is finally available. We’ve already reviewed two of the medium-sized sets from this line, but some of the little sets intrigued me. Each of the named characters has an Ultimate version, available as an individually boxed set for $10 USD. Part counts range between 65 and 101. Six characters are available now, and at least three more are in the pipeline.
I decided to start with 70331 Ultimate Macy and 70332 Ultimate Aaron.

Nick Wilde, that crafty fox from Zootopia
OK, so Disney’s Zootopia isn’t out yet, but the trailer is hilarious and makes this movie a must-see for me. Jordan Schwartz, a fan of all things Disney, gone ahead and made a fantastic sculpt of Nick Wilde, one of the film’s new protagonists, and it looks spot on. The sly look Nick is giving us is too perfect.

Speeding in style
As LEGO car builders know, creating a small vehicle with lots of features is a difficult task. This slick racer by Wave Noiz hits all the right notes though, with butterfly doors, great driver visibility, and dual-exhaust all packaged into a tiny sports car body just big enough to fit a minifig. In my opinion, it all comes together like a fantastic new concept for a Batmobile.
