Even if you’re not an Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo gamer yourself, and even if you’ve never played one of the many LEGO games, it’s hard not to appreciate the strange and stunning LEGO creations inspired by video games. Look for lots of LEGO models inspired by Halo, the Legend of Zelda, Gears of War, Pokemon, Final Fantasy, and more. Game on!

LEGO Pikmin make me nostalgic for Nintendo GameCube

LEGO Pikmin BulbminAs a Wii owner, I’ve been feeling a little bit abandoned lately — no, Nintendo, I don’t want to play yet another incarnation of Wii Sports. And Wii Fit?! Are you kidding me?

These LEGO Pikmin creations by Filip Felberg (also on Flickr) made me smile, though, thinking back to those happy weeks in the summer of 2001 when I worked on Pikmin.

Filip has made Dwarf Bulborbs:

LEGO Battles for Nintendo DS now available [News]

The early impressions about LEGO Battles (a new real-time strategy game for Nintendo DS) weren’t entirely positive, but Destructoid played the game at E3 2009 earlier this month and has a different viewpoint.

Conrad Zimmerman writes:

I’m looking forward to playing this, in part because it looks adorable but also because the simplification of what can often be a convoluted style of game really appeals to me. I avoid RTS games not because they aren’t really fun but because I can’t keep track of everything going on and wind up just getting wiped out when the second or third attack on my forces is made. LEGO Battles looks just simple enough to play that I may be picking this one up when it comes out.

Kotaku previews LEGO Rock Band at E3 2009 [News]

LEGO Rock Band logoKotaku spent some time at E3 playing the upcoming LEGO Rock Band game and reports some early impressions:

The problem with this game is all in the name. LEGO Rock Band makes you wonder “why LEGO?” Maybe “Rock Band: Play Rock Band With Your Kids” would have been better.

Because if you don’t have kids, this game is largely pointless. It’s Rock Band, except with a more pedestrian songlist, and no real changes to the way the game is structured, or plays.

But that’s if you don’t have kids. If you do have kids around, and want a game to play with them, well. This looks pretty damn good.

LEGO Harry Potter Video Game announced at E3 2009 [News]

It’s no surprise that there’s lots of video game news this week. The industry expo, E3, is happening June 2 through 4 in Los Angeles, California. Today’s big news is the announcement by Warner Bros. and TT Games of LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4.

No details on platforms or a more specific release date than “2010”.

Kotaku takes a first look at LEGO Battles, real-time strategy game for DS [News]

Although LEGO Battles for Nintendo DS was announced back in February, details so far have been sparse.

Kotaku had a five-minute look at the game yesterday and has some pre-release impressions.

Stephen Totilo writes:

In traditional RTS fashion, the player draws a box around their Lego units and clicks on places for them to move to or attack. A pull-down menu enables the player to build to build appropriately-themed Lego structures: towers and factories and the like. There was no drag-and-drop Lego construction, but manual block-building hasn’t been much of a component of any of the recent Lego games.

Our speculation back in February that the images we had then were pre-rendered cutscenes and not real game-play turns out to be true. Oh well, not surprising.

LEGO Battles will be available in June.

Space marine light assault vehicle and instructions

Tyler Clites has built the space marine light assault vehicles (SMLAV) inspired by the Warthog from Halo. By popular demand, Tyler created a set of quality instructions available for purchase at a very reasonable price of $5. Having built the SMLAV from his instructions, I can say that parts for the model are easy to acquire and the model itself is very solid.

Check out these fun variations of the SMLAV and military variants.

Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi builds with LEGO to solve writer’s block

The Final Fantasy series has been a frequent inspiration for my LEGO creations, so it was fascinating to read that Final Fantasy creator and head of game design studio Mistwalker Hironobu Sakaguchi builds with LEGO when he’s looking for inspiration.
