LEGO Star Wars is one of the most popular LEGO themes of all time. Far beyond X-wings and TIE fighters, there’s a whole expanded universe of inspiration, and an army of LEGO fans ready to build whatever comes out of George Lucas’s head next.

Scenes from Star Wars movies and television have been a major source of inspiration for LEGO builders since the first time we were transported to that galaxy far, far away. Some builders take more subtle inspiration from the Star Wars universe to create scenes that we never saw but were there all along, like this model of barracks for Rebel troopers on Hoth by Gabe F, a charming view into the day-to-day life of the brave men and women who put their lives on the line to fight the tyranny of the Galactic Empire.

The carved organic snow landscaping is great, and there are lots of little details like portable bunks complete with temperature gauge and power cords, pin-ups on the wall, and cups of caf littered throughout. There’s even a lost sock. Hopefully, the owner has a spare pair to keep their toes warm.

LEGO reveals two new Star Wars sets from Tatooine at San Diego Comic-Con [News]

Today LEGO has taken the wraps off two new Star Wars sets at San Diego Comic-Con, where they’re being displayed to the public for the first time. LEGO has gone back to the classics with these, as both models are from the opening portions of Star Wars: A New Hope set on Tatooine. 75270 Obi-Wan’s Hut has 200 pieces, while 75271 Luke Skywalker’s Landspeeder has 236 pieces. They will retail for $29.99 USD each and will be available January 1, 2020. While both sets are fairly similar to previous releases in the Star Wars theme, there are some new aspects, such as a holographic Princess Leia microfigure in Obi-Wan’s hut.

The earworm that stuck with me when I walked away from the screening of The Phantom Menace is the “Roger Roger” acknowledgment phrase by the battle droids. LEGO 75253 Boost Droid Commander now available for purchase in US and Canada [News]

The LEGO Boost 75253 Droid Commander details were revealed back in May and you can now order it online at LEGO Shop@Home on the US and Canada stores. It comes with 1,177 pieces and retails for US $199.99 and CAN $249.99. Other locations such as the UK does not have them listed as of yet.

This UCS scale Resistance X-Wing is chock full of nostalgia

In 2015 the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens offered us a first glimpse of a somewhat familiar X-Wing doing unfamiliar things — skimming across water and even leaving a rooster tail in its wake. This was exciting stuff! Spine tingling, even. If the prequel movies lacked nostalgia and thus failed to rope in adult Star Wars fans, the newer set of films made up for it in spades with upgraded designs that changed things up enough to keep us interested but still stayed true to its inspiration. The trailer and later the movie had us all clamoring to buy the Resistance X-Wing LEGO set but a builder who goes by the name of Aniomylone had a different idea.

Enter the roughly 2000-piece, UCS-scale T-70 Resistance X-Wing Fighter. One obvious difference from the classic X-wing design is the light gray and blue color scheme that has me wondering if any of the designers at Star Wars were fans of LEGO Classic Space. The streamlined intakes are captured nicely using curved windscreens and seems to be the logical progression from the old design. In closed mode the wings boast a slim, one stud wide, leading edge but in “X” mode it is made clear that the Resistance X-Wing differs from its predecessor by splitting the wing in half, rather than stacking two wings atop one another.

If detailed UCS scale models of Star Wars craft is your thing, then I would strongly advise a perusal of the rest of this builder’s material. Go ahead, I’ll wait. See what I mean?

An immersive garage to get your landspeeder serviced

When not writing articles about fine LEGO creations or taking care of my young children, I crawl down to my basement man-cave and build things out of LEGO. Yes, I am a bit like the dad in The LEGO Movie; and also yes, my toddlers ignore my prohibitions on touching the bricks. But some things survive the attack of sticky little fingers, and I am pleased to present the readers of The Brothers Brick with my latest.

As my alter-ego, Henjin_Quilones, I built and shared this landspeeder repair shop as part of an annual Star Wars competition on Eurobricks. Run by a Twi’lek named Veenac’ebla, the garage on Nar Shaddaa services many types of speeders, often providing them with upgrades to boost the specs. Three speeders, all loosely inspired by real-world cars, sit in the shop for repairs. The red and the grey speeders hearken to classic muscle cars (and to the M-68 from Solo), while the dark blue was inspired by curvy sports cars.

Your lightsabers will make a fine addition to my collection

Each installment in the Star Wars cinematic saga has introduced new villains for audiences to obsess over, from Darth Vader’s first rasping breath in A New Hope to Darth Maul’s devil-like countenance in The Phantom Menace. Revenge of the Sith was no exception, although General Grievous first appeared in the 2004 animated series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Dissatisfied with the official 75112 General Grievous LEGO set, Marcin Otreba has built a stunningly detailed model of the wheezy cyborg commander of the Separatists’ droid army with some truly inspired designs.

By far, my favorite features are the arms which, like his on-screen counterpart, can separate into two slender but no less nimble and deadly appendages. I also love the translucent body cavity housing his vital organs. You’ll also want to take a closer look at the fingers, which are built using B-1 battle droid heads, of course.

Twice the spacey fun

Two ideas immediately came to me when in 2017 LEGO released 75176 Resistance Transport Pod, and guess what–builder Veynom has gone and realised both. Designers of vehicles for the Star Wars universe have always embraced the potential of asymmetric form, the transport pod being a case in point. However, there’s a niggling part of my brain that wants to fix things, balance out the shuttle with a second pod. Imagine it looking something like the Twin-Pod Cloud Car–wait you don’t have to because Veynom’s built it for us.

Then there is that second idea. If you were at all interested in the joys of vintage space LEGO, the set’s trans yellow canopy would have been an instant trigger. You’ve guessed it, Veynom’s gone and built a Classic Space version of the Resistance Twin-Pod too.

Leave your troubles behind with this UCS-scale version of Han Solo’s Mobquet M-68 Landspeeder

We all love a good origin tale, and Solo: A Star Wars Story–particularly the exhilarating scene involving a Mobquet M-68 Landspeeder–establishes a handsome young Han Solo as a daring risk-taker, an adrenaline junkie, a gambler, and a hotshot driver. LEGO has given us an official set of the now iconic landspeeder, but a builder going by the name of Barneius Industries has taken it to a whole other level. A level involving 853 pieces, to be precise. Everything from the speeder’s asymmetrical design to its greebly bits to its striking color scheme and even Han Solo’s lucky dice are replicated nicely in this 1:16 scale model. It is no accident that this supercharged speeder resembles a classic muscle car; in fact, the original design team states that it borrows cues from the Dodge Charger and the Chevrolet Malibu.

If detailed and accurate models of Star Wars craft are your thing, then I highly recommend checking out this builder’s other content. This speeder got a young Han Solo out of trouble but then immediately into some more trouble. There was more trouble after that and even more later on. We would learn that trouble followed Han Solo throughout his entire life but that is why we love him. And he knows it.

New Lego Star Wars video game: The Skywalker Saga revealed at E3 [News]

Hold on to your lightsabers, padawans, TT games has announced an all new Lego Star Wars game, The Skywalker Saga, at this year’s Microsoft XBox E3 press conference. Not merely a rehash of past games, this will be an all-new experience that spans all nine Star Wars movies including the upcoming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. It boasts over 100 playable characters and the ability to drop into the story at any point you wish.

“LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga marks our return to the franchise that kicked off the LEGO video game series. The game will give fans an all-new LEGO Star Wars experience with complete freedom to explore the LEGO Star Wars galaxy,” said Tom Stone, managing director of TT Games. “It was an absolute pleasure to be part of the launch of the original LEGO Star Wars game and it’s equally exciting to now move the series forward and help create a new era of LEGO Star Wars games.”

LEGO Star Wars 75244 Tantive IV Rebel Blockade Runner [Review]

Forty-two years ago, the very first Star Wars movie hit the cinema screens. Even though Episode IV was added to its title later, A New Hope was the first glimpse of the adventures in a galaxy far, far away. It was the first time the audience learned about the droids, Jedi, and, of course, about the Force. The film also revealed dozens of starships and land vehicles. Two of the most important ships appeared in the film’s opening shot. The first of them was the Tantive IV, released in LEGO-form this year as set 75244 Tantive IV. The product contains 1,768 pieces and retails for US $199.99 | CAN $269.99 | UK £179.99. The high ground – Light and LEGO combine to bring Mustafar to life in this Star Wars diorama

In Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, one of the most memorable moments is Anakin and Obi-Wan facing off on the surface of the lava-planet, Mustafar. Alessandro Rizzello brings the climax of this confrontation to life with a combination of LEGO and light.

Built for the Greatest Battles contest on LEGO Ideas, Alessandro has used LED strip lighting to highlight the danger of a river of transparent-orange crystals. Anakin stands on a movie-accurate hover platform, while Obi-Wan has claimed the high ground. A smattering of 1×1 round plate and flame elements complete the scene.

The glow of the lava results in a very cinematic feel. You can almost feel those minifigs sweating from the heat!

LEGO’s Ultimate Lightsaber Duel set coincided with the film’s theatrical release in 2005 and LEGO included a cameo of the scene with Anakin’s Jedi Interceptor in 2012, but so far they are the only official sets to showcase this iconic battle. (Although LEGO did return to Mustafar recently with Darth Vader’s Castle.) We’re lucky that the fan community is willing to make the return trip!
