LEGO Star Wars 40451 Tatooine Homestead: GWP for 2021 May the Fourth weekend [Review]

May the Fourth, the annual Star Wars Day, is almost here, and as usual LEGO is releasing some special goodies to celebrate. This year brings another freebie Gift with Purchase (GWP) set in the line of Star Wars microscale dioramas that LEGO’s been exploring since 2019. 40451 Tatooine Homestead lets you finally recreate Uncle Owen haggling over droids with the Jawa junk dealers outside the Lars family underground home. Maybe you can even get those units in the south range repaired by midday. The set includes 218 pieces and will be available from LEGO.com and in LEGO stores May 1 through May 5, free with a minimum purchase of US $85 | CAN $85 | UK £85 of LEGO Star Wars products.

Bounty hunting is a dangerous profession

While Mos Eisley may be the most wretched hive of scum and villainy in the galaxy, there are plenty of contenders for runner-up when it comes to rough and tumble locations where you would be wise to have someone to watch your back. Darth Bjørn shines a light on one such location on Devaron, the homeworld of the devil-like beings first glimpsed on the famous Mos Eisley cantina. The rock work at the base forms a solid foundation for this shady outpost, which sports a number of non-specific vents, domes, and other mechanical details. The weather-worn walls are built using plates of various colors stacked vertically, which provides an unexpected texture.

Nimble Nimbus V-wing Fighter

Star Wars is notorious for its level of detail and worldbuilding that we barely notice at times. Things like a background character or a vehicle that appears for a split second have extensive Wookieepedia articles. Many of these elements receive backstories from writers of the extended universe. And many of them return to the forefront of newer Star Wars media due to popular demand. For example, the Alpha-3 Nimbus-class V-wing starfighter – as built by Pande (Malen Garek) appears at the end of Revenge of the Sith for a few seconds. Yet, its striking unique silhouette piqued the interest of many vehicle-oriented fans. Many LEGO builders built their own version of this starfighter despite not being very well known.

You could say that the V-wing is essentially an evolutionary step between the Delta-7 Jedi Starfighter and the TIE Fighter. Its sleek arrowhead shape and bladelike wings are tough to get right considering looks and structure. You either make it too skinny and it falls apart, or you make it too thick. Pande found the balance between the two in a beautiful clean finish and sharp angles. I particularly like the usage of tall slopes to make the front wedges and throwing in a little dark grey for greyscale colour variation.

The Star Wars Republic Attack Shuttle is on the way!

Minifigure-scale LEGO Star Wars builds are always few and far between. So when I saw builder Remco Rohaan’s Nu-class Republic Attack Shuttle, I almost fell out of my chair.

This baby is fully loaded with the best of the 501st Legion. Utilizing a cargo box to drop clone troopers and their equipment straight onto the battlefield, the Nu-class shuttle is nearly as much of a Grand Army of the Republic staple as the LAAT/i gunship.

The amount of detail is incredible when you consider the functionality of the build. The fact that the ramps lower and there’s internal lighting showcases the type of dedication we’ve come to expect from Remco. With 18 minifigures aboard, which is a feat of its own, this shuttle is ready for anything.

Everybody gangsta till the TIE Fighter’s wings fold up

Moff Gideon does not simply fly a boring TIE Fighter. Rather, he is a man of class and mysterious wealth and is special enough to have his own personal spacecraft. When he arrives at the scene flanked by his stormtrooper army, there is no escape for Rebel scum… Michał Kozłowski built the TIE variant seen in The Mandalorian, known as the Outland TIE Fighter flown by Moff Gideon.

While not completely bespoke to the cold and calculating Moff, this craft has a unique folding wings feature. As Michał demonstrates in his YouTube video, the wings fold easily but can also stay upright when in flight mode without wobble. He achieves this by having lightsaber blades inside several Technic pins to create the necessary friction to be stable.

Mum says it’s my turn to fly the X-wing!

It seems that Star Wars is experiencing a baby fever. We’ve had enough of surprise fathers, sisters, and *tries not to throw up* grandfathers, so I welcome the new and unexpected. Recently a certain cute green gremlin took pop-culture by storm, and replaced Minions as the default for Facebook mom memes. It’s 2021 and I still see the words “chiccy nuggies” and “choccy milk” in the same sentence. But whatever, babies are cute. Andreas Lenander has caught the bug and built a babyfied X-wing and some baby rebels.

All jokes aside, I really like this babyfied idea for being a new unique take on Star Wars. Just a few weeks ago I wrote about a small build by my friend Ross, where baby Greedo confronts baby Han over a bottle of blue milk. And Andreas’s build is really well done. The walls of the Yavin base offer plenty of variety in detail to keep it from becoming bland and boring. Andreas keeps the X-wing as accurate to the source material as he can, despite the small size. It’s a really difficult ship to get right, even in larger sizes. So big applause to Andreas, he won me over with this build, and not because of the babies.

LEGO Star Wars Helmets Collection: 75304 Darth Vader and 75305 Scout Trooper [Review]

When LEGO announced the first wave of Star Wars helmets many of our readers may have been scratching their heads over the 18+ age rating and the fancy black packaging as LEGO had only recently begun building their adult portfolio. Also notably absent from this line of iconic helmets was perhaps the most iconic helmet of all, the Dark Lord of the Sith himself, Darth Vader. Well, LEGO has corrected this with wave 2 of the Helmets Collection. It includes the ominous visage of 75304 Darth Vader, along with 75305 Scout Trooper, the Stormtrooper variant first seen on the forest moon of Endor, the lightly armored Scout Trooper. The new helmets include 834 and 471 piece respectively, and have price tags of US $69.99 | CAN $99.99 | UK £59.99 (Darth Vader) and US $49.99 | CAN $69.99 | UK £44.99 (Scout Trooper). Both sets will be available for pre-order from March 25th, 2021 from LEGO.com and other retailers, and on general sale globally from April 26th.

LEGO officially unveils 75304 Darth Vader, 75305 Scout Trooper, and 75306 Imperial Probe Droid [News]

Following the early view of the spring 2021 LEGO Star Wars sets published on Walmart.com this week, LEGO has now officially unveiled these three new sets targeted at adult builders and collectors. In addition to continuing the Star Wars Helmets series with new 75304 Darth Vader Helmet and 75305 Scout Trooper Helmet sets, LEGO will also be releasing a completely new, large-scale 75306 Imperial Probe Droid sculpture.

Last week, we spoke with the LEGO Star Wars design team about all three of these sets, as well as some upcoming sets that have not yet been fully revealed. Read on for some extra info we heard straight from the design team!

LEGO Star Wars 75306 Imperial Probe Droid [Review]

In the Star Wars universe, the bad guys often have the coolest toys. In A New Hope, it was Star Destroyers and the Death Star, and with the release of The Empire Strikes Back it was the AT-AT. But one of the first new characters appears in the movie as the Empire searches the galaxy for signs of the Rebel scum that destroyed the Death Star. I am, of course, talking about the Viper Probe droid, launched from the Imperial fleet and scattered across the stars in their pods. From the moment we first saw the technological terror rising out of the snowbank, turning its multi-eyed head and unfolding its arms like some kind of evil jellyfish, it was clear that the Empire would stop at nothing to find the rebels. Joining the collectible helmets in the new 18+ line of LEGO sets, the Imperial Probe Droid is finally available at a scale that does the source material justice. 75306 Imperial Probe Droid includes 683 pieces and will retail for US $59.99 | CAN $79.99 | UK £59.99. It is available for pre-order now, and will be available starting April 26.

LEGO Star Wars adds 75304 Darth Vader, 75305 Scout Trooper, and 750306 Imperial Probe Droid for spring 2021 [News]

Thanks to retail giant Walmart, we’re getting a first look at three new Star Wars construction sets for adults. LEGO will continue their line of Star Wars Helmets with Darth Vader and the Scout Trooper. The Helmets Collection started last year with Boba Fett, the Stormtrooper, and the TIE Fighter Pilot.

Next to the two helmets, the Imperial Probe Droid will get the LEGO treatment once more. The droid has been made in minifigure scale quite a few times before, but this time it consists of a lot more than 25 pieces and will be in a much larger scale, making it a UCS-style droid similar to 75187 BB-8.

There’s no word yet on precisely when the sets will be released or the prices. These sets vary a bit in size from the previous wave, so we’re not sure if LEGO will price them at the same $59.99 USD.

Two great Star Wars ships for all your bounty hunting needs

Whether you need to chase down two-bit scoundrels who owe money or tool around the galaxy with your foster kid in the Star Wars equivalent of a ’96 Nissan Stanza, you’re going to need the right equipment. First, you need a cool outfit, preferably one you’ll wear your entire life, even if you put on a few post-Sarlaac pounds. Next, you’ll need a bucket on your head and a credo about not talking much and never showing your face except during some mushy parts. Lastly, you’re going to need a sweet spaceship and that’s where LEGO builder Tim Goddard comes in. Here we see Boba Fett and his Slave I as well as “Mando” from The Mandolorian with his Razor Crest. Tim makes excellent use of both old and new gray bits for that lived-in mottled effect.

We’ve featured Tim’s Razor Crest before but with the added stands and posed next to his new Slave I, we couldn’t resist bringing it out again for an encore performance.

Baby Greedo shot first

I have felt a disturbance in the force. As if millions of voices cried out “that’s so cute!”, “did Baby Greedo shoot first?”, and “Baby Han is better than Baby Yoda!” It is certainly an adorable homage to a classic scene from Star Wars, as built by Ross Fisher. Here, Baby Greedo confronts Baby Han at blaster-point about a very serious space baby matter, probably something about baby Han stealing Baby Jabba’s favourite sweets.

While being a small and simple build, the choice of baby figures and their positioning is top notch. Baby Greedo’s head placed on a Baby Yoda torso makes him appear small and feisty, which is very in character. Baby Han is just Han’s hairdo placed on a baby-minidoll, and with that minidoll face, Baby Han displays a level of nonchalance evocative of Harrison Ford’s iconic portrayal of the famous scoundrel. The carton of blue milk on the cantina table is definitely the icing on the cake. Not only does it fits the babyfied Mos Eisley Cantina, but it’s also a product of Tatooinian livestock.
