2024 LEGO Advent Calendars, Day 1 [Feature]

December is here, and in these parts that means it’s time for us to don our ugliest sweaters, top off our mugs of hot cocoa, and get very serious about tiny builds hidden behind little doors in LEGO’s crop of advent calendars. And what a bumper crop it is, with an unprecedented (sinister?) SIX themes on offer! This year Marvel lets the other Avengers take a holiday so that Spider-Man and friends can have the spotlight. Disney doubles the minidoll offerings with a princess-themed calendar making its debut. Advent alumni Star Wars and Harry Potter are back, and of course, we have LEGO’s own City and Friends themes.

LEGO Art 31209 The Amazing Spider-Man breaks the mold [Review]

LEGO Art started out three years ago with four portraits, where the most variation in physical depth was the height of a stud. LEGO 31206 The Rolling Stones broke out of the rectangular frame and added a bit of depth and 31208 The Great Wave took the depth a bit further, but with LEGO 31209 The Amazing Spider-Man, LEGO have boldly gone right out of the frame! The set also combines larger plates and slopes with varied size tiles to replicate the style and shading of a comic book. Let’s take a closer peek together at the set, which checks in at 2,099 pieces and is available now for US $199.99 | CAN $259.99 | UK £169.99.

LEGO gives your favorite web-slinger the mosaic treatment in 31209 The Amazing Spider-Man [News]

Building on the success of the 31199 Marvel Studios Iron Man mosaic from 2020, LEGO once again fuses the Art and Super Heroes themes together in 31209 The Amazing Spider-Man. With 2,099 pieces, this set is a departure from the pointillism of past pop culture pictures, instead adding 3-D aspects to the image and imitating the Ben-Day dot style typical of comic books. The web-head’s portrait measures 21″ (54 cm.) by 16″ (41 cm), and is accompanied by an appropriately-themed soundtrack, as per usual for recent Art sets. 31209 The Amazing Spider-Man will be available from LEGO stores and their website starting on August 1st, and will retail for a price of US $199.99 | CAN $259.99 | UK £169.99.

Once you go green, you can’t go back

Spider-Man’s nemesis Green Goblin has never looked as good as he does in this awesome large-scale LEGO version by Nikita Nikolsky. The Green Goblin himself looks mighty good in a scale that makes the pumpkin bombs a perfect fit, but it’s the glider’s use of weird flat silver pieces, many of which came from Bionicle, that caught my eye first. The purple portions are paper shapes that Nikita cut out; I’d have loved to see a brick-built solution but I have to admit the paper looks good. (And for those LEGO purists out there who would complain, there’s plenty of precedent in official sets for incorporating custom paper shapes, such as the little-known Muji line).

LEGO Marvel sets for January 2023 revealed with new Hulkbuster, Quinjet, Morbius, and more [News]

Today LEGO has taken the wraps off the latest lineup of Marvel Super Heroes sets, revealing four new sets slated to launch in January 2023. The sets range from classics like the Avengers Quinjet with a scene from the original 2012 Avengers movie, to lesser-known scenes like Miles Morales fighting Morbius. New versions of the Hulkbuster and Ghost Rider’s motorcycle round out the offerings. Check out all the details below.

This Spider-man scene is bananas!

Over the years we’ve seen the LEGO banana being used in various creative ways. The part was originally designed for LEGO Belville, so it’s a bit out of scale when it comes to LEGO minifigures. Fans love using it for claws, teeth, horns, fangs and yes bananas. Thanks to themarkstudios_84 we can now also add motion effects to that list. The Pork Grind figure is looking very sleek and the inclusion of motion graphics makes these figures look like they popped right out of a comic book.

Pork Grind and Spider-Ham appear to be running. The bananas represent the movement of the legs. Adding the tasmanian devil swirl tile is a very nice touch. And the difference between the ice cream scoops and the Monkey Kid cloud also indicates the difference in height between the two running minifigures. The thought cloud adds to the comic book feel, same goes for the stars flying around poor Spider-man’s head. My guess is Spider-Ham tried to hit Pork Grind with the mallet, but he ended up hitting our friendly neighbourhood Spider-man.

Miles “Mosaic” Morales

The Brothers Brick contributor Chris Doyle has conspired with Alyse Middleton on another large-scale LEGO mosaic. Visiting the Spider-Verse, they created a mosaic tribute to Miles Morales.

If you’re like me (and I know I am), then you probably love the Into the Spider-Verse movie. Miles Morales quickly became my favorite take on the Spider-Man character, and I’d started (and abandoned) more than a few attempts to pay tribute to the character in LEGO form. Still, when I wanted to challenge myself and try a mosaic style that varied from the LEGO Art format I’d been working in, I decided Miles had to be the focus. Then I teamed up again with Alyse to make this new challenge a bit easier. Built on a 96×64 base of Technic brick, this images uses layers of plate and other elements to create an image in line with the animation style from the movie.

LEGO Brick Sketches 40535 Iron Man & 40536 Miles Morales [Review]

Brick Sketches are a relatively new LEGO theme that debuted in 2020, based on a popular series of builds by LEGO designer Chris McVeigh, from back when he was just a humble fan. Brick Sketches blend 3D sculpture and 2D art to create brick-built portraits of popular characters suitable for hanging on your wall. So far, LEGO has officially released Brick Sketches for only three of its IP licenses – Star Wars, Disney, and DC Comics. But Marvel joins in the fun this April 1st with the release of the 200-piece 40535 Iron Man US $16.99 | CAN $19.99 | UK £14.99 and the 214-piece 40536 Miles Morales US $16.99 | CAN $19.99 | UK £14.99. But will these sets draw you in? Or are they kind of sketchy?

LEGO Marvel Superheroes 76219 Spider-Man & Green Goblin Mech Battle [Review]

The greatest foes in comic history are always two sides of the same coin. Peter Parker (aka Spider-Man) is a scientifically minded young man; an underdog driven to use his powers to responsibly serve his city. Norman Osborn (aka The Green Goblin) is something of a scientist himself; a billionaire who only craves more power, even at the expense of anyone who gets in his way. These two have been engaged in a constant struggle on the comic book page since the early 60s. Now LEGO is bringing their battle to toy shelves once again, this time arming each of them with a giant mech suit. Mechs for these two might seem weird at first glance, but both characters regularly rely on tech like web shooters and goblin gliders. So maybe this upgrade isn’t that far-fetched. Besides, putting Marvel characters into giant mechs seems to be a formula that’s working for LEGO. But does the success of the formula repeat itself here? I’ll take the next train; this one looks a little crowded…

Ben Cossy was inspired by the PS4 Spider-Man game and wanted to capture the Mr. Negative subway battle in brick form. But, with no Mr. Negative minifigure to turn to, Ben adapted his idea into a classic Spidey/Venom throw-down. The kinetic energy imbued into the combatants and the subway car battle damage is an excellent example of storytelling in vignette form. But, looking past the action, you’ll see that Ben’s captured all the details of a subway car wonderfully, from the brick-built doors to the numerous ads and posters. Although we have to wonder about the “Wayne Technology” ad. Is this a continuity error, or are the multiversal shenanigans getting that far out of hand?

Things are spiraling out of control for Spider-Man!

Lego_nuts has recreated this stunning scene from Spider-man: No Way Home. The world appears to spin as Spider-Man is chased by Dr Strange through a mirror dimension. The city has a great colour scheme, with hints of green and orange providing the city with a vibrant look. An interesting technique is featured on one of the buildings in the bottom left of the picture, where 1×1 plates have been used to represent window frames.

Is it wrong that I’m rooting for The Lizard?

It is my opinion that LEGO has a difficult time making Spider-Man sets exciting. Don’t get me wrong, I love Spider-Man. He has all of the weirdest and coolest villains ever. But their current Spider-Man lineup, even their massive Daily Bugle set didn’t stir much interest for me. However, if this creation by hachiroku92 were a set, I’d plunk down top dollar for it. I don’t know, there’s just something about it. I love the toxic sludge, the fact that it takes place in a sewer scores points with me and it is a nice cozy diorama that would look good on any shelf. But the star of the show would have to be this builder’s interpretation of The Lizard. Wow! Just…wow! I’m seeing a Jurassic Park Dino head, the lab coat is amazing and those claws are the stuff of nightmares.
