Alien vs. Predator

Crossovers in your mind often end up being more epic than they do on the big screen, but nonetheless they should be applauded for jumping tremendous logistical and legal hurdles alone. Say what you will about the quality of the Alien vs. Predator films, simply seeing two of Hollywood’s greatest space monsters duke it out was well worth it. Kiwi builder Grantmasters is aware of the crossover appeal, and having previously built separate portraits of the Predator and Alien, he has now constructed a scene with them fighting to a literal death.

Golly fluff – Archimedes the owl in LEGO form

Many will recognise this wise, well-educated character as Archimedes from the Disney film The Sword in the Stone. Tyler Clites has depicted his colouring perfectly from those yellow eyes to the tuft of white feathers beneath his beak. As a character known to be a little grumpy and sarcastic, Tyler has captured Archimedes’ cynical expression perfectly with those expressive eyebrows.

But don’t make the mistake of thinking he is a stuffed owl, I guarantee that those wings can flap. Fans of The Sword in the Stone will also enjoy a previous LEGO build we featured here on TBB, Kay’s Squire from the same movie.

Does this girl ring a bell for you?

I’m not sure what is delayice‘s secret, but ordinary bricks and slopes in his hands assume some extreme degree of cuteness. And even that creepy girl from the horror classic The Ring is crawling just to give you a hug and cuddle with you. Amazingly enough, the structure of the model is so simple and clear that anyone can repeat it by examining the picture. Thus, it’s another beautiful example of how great combinations of just a handful of pieces can be the best illustration of a builder’s talent.

Harry Potter in vignettes: tiny scenes from the wonderful world of wizarding

Builder Marcel V. is on a mission to picture Harry Potter’s life one little slice at a time. These terrific vignettes take us from 4 Privet Drive, to Platform 9 and 3/4, Ollivander’s, and right on to Hogwarts’ Sorting Hat and the Gryffindor Common Room. Marcel tells us he’s planning a rather lengthy series, so we’ll check back in as he continues to create these brick snapshots. For now, though, check out the first five scenes in Harry’s life:

2016 Oscar nominations recreated in LEGO [Video]

The 88th Academy Awards will be held this Sunday in Hollywood, and Andrea Toscano created a brickfilm trailer featuring all eight Best Picture nominees, from The Revenant and The Martian to Brooklyn and Room. Which is your favorite LEGO version?

Functioning LEGO pinball machine bounces you from the Shire to Mordor [Video + Interview]

We’ve posted several impressive LEGO-built games over the years (including LEGO versions of Settlers of Catan, Trench, Go, and even a LEGO Star Wars pinball machine), but Jonas‘s Lord of the Rings-themed game is truly jaw-dropping. This one hundred percent LEGO, fully functioning pinball machine includes microscale scenes from all your favorite Middle Earth locations, including Hobbiton (the ball shooter lane), Helms Deep, Ortanc, Weathertop (a bumper), Fangorn, Minas Tirith, and even the Black Gates of Mordor (each gate is a flipper!)

The machine is over two feet long and a foot wide and tall (or 62cm x 32cm x 36cm to be precise) and Jonas says it took him twelve straight hours of work and more than 2000 pieces to create this arcade masterpiece.

Once Upon A Brick: Disney characters as LEGO bricks

Chris Adams has developed a series of Disney characters based around the shape of the basic LEGO brick. Entitled Once Upon A Brick, his collection currently has at least 18 Disney characters from Mickey Mouse to characters from Frozen. The concept is simple: The body shape of each character is based on the basic LEGO brick with specific colours and added features to really identify the character.

Artificial Intelligence will make the world efficient and set you free

The short independent film Keloid depicts a very different world from the one we know. In the film, society has come to rely on an intricate network of artificial intelligence devices designed to bring efficacy and then control. Devid VII has recreated the Militech Weapons Platfom and accompanying drones from the film in LEGO.

Devid’s weapons platform is a fantastic combination of menacing robotic features, weaponry and the intimidating sense that ‘Big Brother’ is watching. I particularly love the use of Mixels joints at the ‘ankle’ as it looks cool, adds function and also accurately reflects the film.

This second view uses depth of field nicely to focus on the impassive drones in front of the weapons platform. The use of minifigure parts mixed with brick heads is perfect to mimic the film’s drones who have big metallic blank faces and eyes that never really look at anything.

With sci-fi, artificial intelligence, a 1984-esque oppressive future and LEGO, Devid has served me a perfect cocktail …cheers!

LEGO District 9 Exosuit

I may be a bigger fan of District 9 when compared to most people. It’s partly because it’s set in my home country of South Africa, but mostly because it has one of the coolest mech scenes ever created.

The Exosuit / mech prawn / bio-suit is done great justice by Jonas and uses some clever tricks to get all the details in this relatively small build. My personal favourite is the heavy use of the minifig pirate hook hands for multiple elements.

Deadpool, the most romantic gentleman in town

Hey girl, you turn my software into har—[We can’t say that. This blog doesn’t post that kind of stuff. -Ed].

Nothing says “I love you” like some violence, courtesy of your friendly neighborhood Deadpool (and Chris McVeigh). Roses and blood are both red, right? Perfect.

New LEGO Star Wars sets unveiled at Toy Fair New York 2016 [News]

Thanks to our man on the ground, Dan Rubin, we have the juicy details about a ton of new sets revealed by LEGO at the 2016 Toy Fair being held in New York today. In addition to the complete details about 75098 Assault on Hoth posted earlier today, we’ll be bringing you information on new sets in various LEGO themes over the course of the weekend. But let’s get started with the theme you all really wanna see: STAR WARS!

As well as the new battle packs and microfighters that we reviewed in detail last month, there are new sets spanning the original trilogy, prequel trilogy and Rebels animated series. We also got a close-up look at a couple of sets from the brand new Disney XD animated series LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures, which follows the exploits of a bunch of scavengers called the Freemakers, and is set in an era between Empire and Jedi.

LEGO Deadpool, bricks without a mouth

With Deadpool finally being released either today or tomorrow (depending on where you live and when you read this), the world looks like it’s finally getting the Deadpool movie we’ve all wanted. To coincide with this, Jonas has recreated the, erm, lower half of the merc with a mouth.
