We all love a good LEGO Gundam or Macross mecha, but LEGO builders everywhere are also creating excellent models of their own designs. Have a look at them here.

These Gundam builds would make for great sets

Based on designs from the original Mobile Suit Gundam series, Rokan Cheung has built the main Gundam mech head and a BrickHeadz version of its pilot, Amuro Rey. A variety of slope and angled pieces have been used to create the complex shapes of the head. Corner panels are stacked together to form the vent sections on the sides of the helmet. The BrickHeadz build has some great features, such as croissants representing curls in the fringe and tooth pieces portraying sharp-pointed boots. With official LEGO set releases such as Voltron and Optimus Prime in recent years, maybe there’s potential that something like Rokan’s models might appear in the future.

You’ll need some serious firepower to take out this mech

Now that’s one bulky machine! LEGO builder Moko has designed another awesome mech, complete with a detailed interior. The machine comes armed with a tactical rifle, ramming spike, and what appears to be missile pods on the shoulders. There is even the nice inclusion of a winch on the front, providing a way for the pilot to gain access to the cockpit. Shield plates, from the Nexo Knights theme, are placed on the sides of the torso, accentuating the angles at the chest section.

Another interesting feature of the mech is that it has a detailed inner frame which can be seen when the armor segments are removed. Although the frame is not visible all the time, seeing the internal workings of the machine really makes you appreciate the extra effort which Moko has put in to make this a believable robotic model.

This lightning-themed mech is electrifying

What’s that yellow thing weaving through the tall grass? Well, it’s no Pikachu, that’s for sure. This electric-type LEGO mech by Peter Zieske is from the turn-based combat game Into the Breach. But considering the 8-bit isometric style of the game graphics, this version is a considerably higher definition upgrade. Striding through the grass dual-wielding a pair of whips that could give Iron Man’s nemesis Whiplash a run for his money.

But this mech isn’t just pretty on the outside. The front flips up to reveal a pilot.

Send me a robot angel right now

Descending from the heavens comes this holy mech, created by Ronin Bricks. The small machine features sharp pointed wings and wields a spear with a circular quarter piece representing its curved blade. The head is formed of a rounded plate with a small tile representing the visor of the robot. The use of bars and clips provides the mech with a fantastic range of articulation. Nozzle pieces have been cleverly used for the feet, providing the mech with the ability to bend its feet. The build comes complete with a stand, perfect for posing this creation in some dramatic aerial poses.

This Octan drone is a real gas!

In a world where shows like Robot Wars and Battlebots have already come and gone, the sport of drone racing has got to be in our near future, right? And here’s hoping the robots look as good as this LEGO Octan Drone by Devid VII. I love all the striping on this machine, fitting within the standard Octan color palette. The angles, relying mainly on bar-to-clip shenanigans, give this bot the poise of a mechanical gazelle. And I just can’t get over the excellent use of the square-rimmed BrickHeadz glasses under its fuel tanks.

Tune up your mech in this miniature hangar

The perfect place to prepare for a battle. Kosmas Santosa has created this wonderful build of a mechanical repair area in a microscale form. The mech has an impressive muscular shape with the nice touch of a skate used for the horn on its head. The hangar floor also has some inventive features such as gear racks representing ladders. Small vehicles use upside-down roller skates as wheels, with the stud connected to the mesh plate underneath.

There is also a great tutorial video, allowing you to build your own mech storage area. It’s definitely worth having a go at building this superb display!

Bossk is the boss when he’s in his battle-mech

Greg Dalink is slowly making his way through the bounty hunters from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back with his awesome battle-mech concept. With IG-88 and Boba Fett already part of the roster, it’s now the turn of the Trandoshan terror Bossk. Unlike the previous two, Bossk naturally has a lot more ‘organic’ parts on show, and Greg has boldly elected to stick with olive green for his scaly skin. There are still a limited number of parts in this colour, so there are a few creative choices – most notably the use of a dinosaur head for, er, the head. Bossk’s signature yellow jumpsuit is well integrated with mechanical details accomplished by greebling, which makes it look more like armour than a cloth suit. It adds some good emphasis to the heavy-duty feel of the mech.

Greg has gone the extra mile and created a sandy base for this bounty-hunting walker to stand upon as well. My favourite detail of these battle-mechs is the fact they can seat a minifigure version of the mech itself, and they can poke their heads out of the top. I can only assume that Bossk is having a friendly conversation with this Tusken raider, rather than looking to gobble him up…

A mean green mecha machine

Get ready pilots! Bushido Bots has constructed this impressive mech, inspired by the machines featured in the game, Titanfall. The muscular, rounded form of the mech is created through the use of a variety of sloped parts, including a large amount of wedge pieces. The backpack has some nice curvature around the outer casing thanks to the use of vehicle mudguards. Armed with a multi barreled rifle, cannons and missile pods, this mech is packing some serious firepower. Watch out for this one-eyed wonder on the battlefield!

Celebrating a 20-year-old LEGO robot theme (no, not that one)

Everyone remembers Bionicle, right? It was one of the themes that is credited with saving the LEGO company from ruin at the turn of the century. Six builders have recently decided to pay tribute to the Bohrok-Kal by reimagining these fearsome creatures. Redverse is one of those builders, and has combined the Bionicle villains with a much more obscure theme from around the same time: Spybotics. This theme was a subset of Mindstorms, and each came with a large cockpit piece which doubled as the programmable brick. 3807 Snaptrax S45 forms the inspiration for this creature, with the red cockpit being an obvious inclusion. The mirroring of the cockpit shape with the trans-red covers on the guns is a nice touch.

The tracks on the legs are also an homage to the 2002 set, but they aren’t just there to look cool! As well as its intimidating walking stance, this mech can transform into a slightly less aggressive form.

This mech is raring to launch into space

Fully equipped for galactic warfare, comes this awesome creation by Wiseman_Lego. The design is reminiscent of a mech called a Jegan, which is featured in a variety of Mobile Suit Gundam series. This model has a muscular, tough-looking form, thanks to the application of rounded and angled parts. A triangular road sign acts as a centerpiece at the chest with a hint of orange on either side creating contrast against the blue and grey colour scheme.

The machine is able to house a pilot which is impressive considering the mech’s slender shape. On the back and around the legs are a variety of thrusters to allow for fast travel in space. This build is a perfect tribute to classic mecha designs while still being able to have a unique and interesting appearance.

Chunky mech just wants a handshake

It’s time to have a look at another fantastic mechanical model built by the talented Mitsuru Nikaido. The mech is presented in a monochromatic style for the most part, the exceptions being the little hints of colour at the eye and pistol. A wide claw piece represents the head and its placement allows for the convenient position of a red axle to act as an eye. At the shoulders, shield pieces are attached to the model, with angled bricks placed upon them. The fingers have a humanoid look, conveyed by the rounded tips at the ends. Armed with a tough looking blaster, this mech could prove to be quite the adversary.

This Pacific Rim mech is ready to avenge

Giant hulking robots are always fun to see in LEGO form. Psyro TtunTomato has built this awesome version of Gypsy Avenger from Pacific Rim Uprising movie. The model has a muscular design with a slender waist section, all presented in a clean-looking dark blue colour scheme. The golden eye area is cleverly represented by a textured circular brick. While it is in a bit of an odd position, a bike chassis is used to form the crotch of the mech.

A trans-orange wheel rim portrays the machine’s powerful generator at the chest. When it is time for the final strike against a monster, the mech comes equipped with a chain sword which is represented by a blade first featured in the Nexo Knight sets.
