2024 TBB custom LEGO advent calendar – Day 23 [Feature]

All year-round, we here at The Brothers Brick spend our time featuring amazing builds made by the LEGO fan community. But we figured, for the holiday season, it would be great to build something together. For each day from December 1st through the 24th, we’ll be posting instructions to a custom TBB advent calendar build, one part each day. Want to participate? LEGO test chamber shows that Portal love is still alive

It’s been over a decade since Portal 2 reunited Chell and GLaDOS for one last round of physics-based puzzles and razor-sharp comedy, but the game still holds a special place in our hearts. Thanks to builders adotnamedstud and _standaartwoudt_, Aperture Labs is open again for testing, this time in LEGO! The scene has it all: A button! Switches! Gravity! Science! Potato! Minifig Chell is joined by familiar friends GLaDOS (in a potato) and Companion Cube, while new sidekick Wheatly keeps an eye on things from above. The Aperture logo made from tiles is a wonderful touch. Seeing this scene makes me want to dig out the game to play through it again. In case you missed the LEGO Dimensions wave of gaming sets, the Companion Cube tiles and Chell minifig were a real thing!

Rome wasn’t built in a day – and neither was the Death Star

Of the many great things about the Andor series, one was a short post-credits scene which showed… Well, I won’t spoil it – go and watch the Narkina 5 prison arc, and you’ll see what I mean. Suffice to say it has a link to this LEGO build, created jointly by Stefan Johansson and Robert Lundmark. It depicts a couple of TIE fighters flying over an unfinished part of the Empire’s infamous Death Star. And very nicely built, too! I like how the shape of TIE’s wings are reflected in the surface the droids are building. But that gold really makes it pop, in contrast to the blacks and greys of both the Empire and space as a whole. And of course it’s reminiscent of solar panels in real-world space stations, really putting the science into science-fiction!

2024 LEGO Advent Calendars, Day 23 [Feature]

It’s December 23rd, aka Christmas Eve Eve! Only two doors remain. How about a little trivia first? The first LEGO Harry Potter calendar debuted in 2019. This year’s iteration echoes that version with a few very similar builds, and the same professor – Flitwick! But while 2019 had a younger-looking dapper Flitwick, this year we get the wizened whitebeard version from the first two films. Why two such different takes? Thank Alfonso Cuaron, director of Prisoner of Azkaban, who restyled the character for a cameo appearance that ended up sticking for later films. A win for Warwick Davis who was spared a lot of extra prosthetic makeup! What will Harry Potter’s calendar bring today, not to mention our other gifts from Friends, Disney, City, Star Wars, and Spider-Man?

The details run deep in this mine

Descend to the depths of imagination with “The Echoing Mines of the Mountain’s Heart” by syrdarian. This fantastic cross-section of some fabled dwarven caverns is a ~~gold mine~~ mithril mine of detail, conveying a sense of scale from the faint light at the top of the staircase all the way down to the rivulets of lava far below. A big part of any great model is presentation, and these mines are no exception, with superb lighting in the right places. Thanks to that light, along with the combination of natural-looking rock formations and easily recognizable dwarven architecture, it’s easy to see the dwarves’ masterworks deep within the earth. Let’s just hope these particular dwarves resist the temptation to delve too greedily and too deep.

2024 LEGO Advent Calendars, Day 22 [Feature]

Only three days left of our annual calendar spree. I’m going to miss these posts and sharing the opening experience with the team and with you, our readers. Before we begin, perhaps a little more trivia? In 2008 LEGO released the first Castle advent calendar and there was much rejoicing… in some parts of the world. The US and Canada weren’t officially supported for this set, which created quite an uproar with our readers! A Kingdoms calendar appeared two years later, marking the last time LEGO Castle appeared in advent form. While we don’t have Castle doors to open this year, we do have Friends, Disney, City, Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Spider-Man!

LEGO Creator 3-in-1 31165 Wild Animals Panda Family [Review]

Recently, LEGO set designers have taken the Creator 3-in-1 line of animal sets to the next level. Sets like LEGO Creator 3-in-1 31129 Majestic Tiger, LEGO Creator 3-in-1 31154 Forest Animals: Red Fox, and LEGO Creator 3-in-1 31150 Wild Safari Animals have given wildlife fans a lot to be excited about. With 4 new sets coming in January, this trend is showing no signs of stopping. The most impressive of the latest wave features a panda bear and cub snacking on bamboo, with a penguin and chick and a pair of orcas as the alternate models. LEGO Creator 3-in-1 31165 Wild Animals Panda Family contains 626 pieces and will be available on January 1st for US $39.99 | CAN $49.99 | UK £34.99. You may also be able to find the set after release from 3rd party sites like Amazon and eBay.

2024 LEGO Advent Calendars, Day 21 [Feature]

What’s your favorite holiday sweet? Candy canes? Cookies? Fudge? …Fruit cake? In Denmark, where our Advent Calendars are designed, this is the season for Æbleskiver, which are pancake balls served with jam. Fresh from the griddle at a winter market, there’s nothing better! But the powdered sugar and jam would make for sticky Friends, Disney, City, Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Spider-Man!
