Bloomin’ Kraata

Ahh, Kraata. The 2003 attempt by LEGO to match the catch-em-all collectability of Pokémon with slug-like Bionicle creatures. If you look closely at these exotic plants from Will Hafner, you can see the subtle variations that distinguish the different stages of their life cycle. Will has even created a flower with just the rare seventh-stage Shadow Kraata (those are the violet ones). I also like the vase, which looks like it began life as a Bionicle canister lid. There’s no doubt these are some cool-looking blooms, but I think if I saw them in my garden I’d be a bit concerned about invasive species.

Go Go Gadget Brick Separator!

Aido K presents a LEGO Brickheadz inspired build celebrating the fantastic Cartoon Classic: Inspector Gadget! But ‘Gadget hasn’t appeared on his own, the team is here with Penny and Brain along for the ride to ensure the great Inspector doesn’t get into (too much) trouble!

Aido captures the stylistic approach of both Brickheadz and Inspector Gadget here along with the necessary appendages befitting the great detective, with each gadget representing key moments from the series.

I love how Inspector Gadget’s quizzical expression and elongated face have been captured perfectly here, too, whilst keeping to the design of a Brickheadz which is then carried on through both Penny and the loveable dog, Brain whose sat-to-attention pose is wonderfully realized in LEGO.

I hope you’ve enjoyed exploring these delightful characters and celebrating some cartoon nostalgia because this post will self-destruct in 5, 4, 3…

Oh man, what a mandrill!

The talented Sandro Quattrini returns with another fascinating creation, this time in the form of a humanoid primate. The mandril is bursting with personality through its eye-catching colour scheme and stocky proportions. Within the face is a fantastic variation of parts; blue flippers are placed along the nose, headdresses represent ears, and a wig (used on the revolutionary soldier minifigure) portrays the white beard at the chin. The binoculars almost look real with a microphone holding the optical instrument together. Buttons of the walkie-talkie are created by placing rollerskates sideways and the stylish boots feature fur lined hood pieces as the main toe sections. But beware, it appears as though this mandrill could be quite the hunter, as the creature comes armed with a deadly-looking rifle.

Phoning in a solar sailor

One of my all-time favorite games doesn’t have a name but its variations are known by many. The “telephone” game, in its many forms, gravitates around the idea of altering a phrase, image, or item slightly as it’s passed around to each participant. While most of us played it as kids, some adult fans of LEGO like to play a version of their own that is often out of this world. Builder Eli Willsea created the STG-2 Sailer as the 4th iteration in the latest telephone series. The small, rockhopper-style craft somewhat reminds me of the starter ship in No Man’s Sky (NMS) with its compact body and raised back portion. More NMS parallels arise with the solar sail sections with boosters firing off behind them. The sails creatively use the balloon sections from Friends sets and Sweet Mayhem’s Systar Starship along with some golden rigging for deployment and retraction. The coloration and parts usage give this ship lots of curves and angles that really catch the eye, an essential part of good spaceship building. Greeble, or detail, all you want but if your ship doesn’t visually swoop it’ll probably end up resembling a flying, mechanical potato. Thankfully, Eli knows how to avoid the spud fate and instead made a fantastic little puddle jumper that the next builder will have fun emulating.

The turtle with a small world on her back

Grayson M‘s latest creation reminds me a little of the Discworld books, which is certainly no bad thing! He has created a charming sea turtle with a whole world on her back – a world of coral. The reef on the turtle’s back allows for some inventive parts use; everything from zamor spheres and macaroni tubes to wheels and Bionicle blades is in there. Impressively all this is happening without making it feel too crowded – the variation in parts, textures, and size seems very carefully done to achieve this. But don’t let the bright colours of the reef distract you from the ingenious construction of her head! This uses a Brachiosaurus body from the short-lived Dinosaurs theme from 2001. It’s a perfect complement to the colourful coral and gives a weathered look to this reef mother.

Flowers in flight

This LEGO sculpture from Patrick Biggs speaks to me, even if I’m not quite sure what it’s saying. Titled She flies with her own wings, Patrick also adds this bit of lore in their photo description: “As spring soars into summer, if you look just right, you may spot this fabled spirit as it brings the rose bushes to bloom.” The stark contrast between the greenery and red blooms certainly makes the artic white of the bird seem like a spectral image. The wide range of LEGO elements in play rewards a closer look; I spotted wings from the Legends of Chima, tails from Hero Factory, and even a white minifigure life preserver ring around the eye.

Bubbles always bounces back

No matter how many times they get hit, the Powerpuff girls always get back up. But the three girls made from sugar, spice, and a splash of Chemical X are not the only ones. Their arch-nemesis Mojo Jojo also took quite a few hits, and always seemed to turn up. Iron builder Dan Ko knocks another one out of the park with this whimsical scene featuring the youngest and sweetest Powerpuff girl, Bubbles, and her old pal Mojo. The seed part here is the big green fig hand circling Mojo’s eyes, and peeking out on either side of his headband.

Guardian of the natural order

When I take in this LEGO God of Nature by builder Konstantin T, the first thing that comes to my mind is balance. I don’t necessarily get the vibe of a god solely focused on flora and fauna, but rather a deity representing the balance of the cosmos, of the “nature” of all things. And while this includes plants, animals, the elements, and even the visiting pilgrim, the angular, metallic nature of the altar leads me to thoughts of how those “organic” entities live in harmony with the natural world.

There is some truly breathtaking Bionicle craftsmanship in this design! The ability to use such large, single-purpose parts for tree trunks, stairs, and wisps of energy emanating from the god is outright stellar. But the peak of this build has got to lie in the design of the wandering pilgrim. Here’s a better view of our world-weary traveler below.

And thats Checkmate for Galidor...

In the Dark Days when LEGO was struggling to stay profitable, they tried a new strategy and created a TV Show and its subsequent LEGO tie in series which…well, it came and went. This theme was Galidor, and Matt Rowntree has taken elements from the theme and repurposed in an inspired way in this Chess set build!

Whilst one player takes the blue side, made from parts from Nepol, the other takes the red, utilising parts from Ooni!
I love how the parts have been utilised to create Chess Pieces that we all recognise, whilst Matt manages to add uniformity to the bases of all the playing pieces whilst blending traditional LEGO pieces with the Galidor pieces that have limited connections points!

Floating up to the city in the sky

Far from Norman Greenbaum’s lyrics but still suiting the rhythm, this futuristic flying city by Builder Umbra-Manis certainly looks like a paradise all its own. A microscale aircraft sits on one side of the city’s extended air-docks, leading into a thick, walled courtyard. Trees exposed to the open air line the exterior of the platforms, using brown claws with green flower studs attached to the versatile, hexagonal NEXO Knights plates which make up the structure’s base. Nice parts usage certainly abounds in this model. Minifigure rollerskates with trans-yellow tombstone plates, as I call them, make great little courier vessels which enter the city and circle its interior. The sculpting and coloration of the buildings make me feel like I’m playing a LEGO version of a Ratchet and Clank level which is nothing to complaing about.

OMG! This pupper doggo is toats adorbz!

This latest LEGO build by Andreas Lenander is just so dog-gone good! Using outward-facing studs gives his darling cockapoo’s fur the breed’s typical floof-iness. Add to that the textures from slopes, various tooth parts, tan ingots, and rock-textured pieces, and this puppy looks downright cuddly! But I think the best part of this build is no walks at 6:00 AM, no begging for food, and no accidents on the rug.

The breathtaking face of Keanu Reeves

Ever have that feeling where you’re not sure if you’re awake or dreaming? Well make sure to wake up dear reader, we have an article for you. Rickard Stensby has created this most outstanding build of the charming Keanu Reeves. The model captures the proportions of the actor’s head in a fun, stylized way by extending the overall length of the face. An interesting technique can be found at the nose, where clip pieces are placed side by side to form nostrils. 1×1 curved slopes represent the lips providing the build with a realistic appearance and claw pieces portray the rounded edges of Keanu’s moustache. Even the little strand of hair, hanging over the forehead, is an excellent edition. Party on dudes!
