A room with a view

As a predominantly character-focused builder myself, I have really enjoyed watching prolific Romanian builder Legranger Absurde develop his own distinct brand of small-scale characters over the past few months. His signature style invariably features Mixel eyes, long bangs, and curvaceous females in shoulderless outfits. But it also demonstrates some new clever limb articulation techniques, allowing for wonderful posing. And with his latest creation, the builder has even taken a crack at building a detailed scene around one of these figures:

Si-BORED Industries new drone creates a BUZZ of excitement

Now the festivities are over, the presents opened, and the New Year welcomed in, we can turn our focus to Droneuary. During the month of ~~January~~ Droneuary, there is a definite surge in the production of new drones within the LEGO community. These Wichtigtuer Beinenstick (lit. “busy-body beehive”) drones by our very own Simon Liu are busy with a hive task.

Simon’s winged, honey-logistic drones were developed in response to comments on the original Wichtigtuer drone, which launched a couple of days ago. The original pectacular drones came armed with an ingenious brick-built weapon, complete with ironsight. Clearly the winged drone had to drop some lower body weight to achieve the miracle of flight.

Titans of part usage

Builder Cole Blaq is fast perfecting the art of “blink and you won’t notice it’s LEGO”. For the past while he’s been creating a line of robots which he calls the ‘Titan Series” that make great use of constraction armour pieces (among many other things) to create models that really convey the feeling of cold metal.

Olivia’s all deadly curves

Builder Jarek has already proven himself to be a master of hard angles and flat planes with his incredible Star Destroyer, but now he’s shaking things up with this stunning character, named Olivia the Swordmaiden. Jarek makes excellent use of the new balloon panels and lots of curved bricks and slopes for a result that looks ripped straight from the pages of a sci-fi concept art book.

Camaros as far as the eye can see

This is something of a different post. I was originally going to show off a render of a Camaro from the talented Garry, but it turns out the design here is based off two different versions from Calin. So, instead of giving you just one or the other, here’s the whole lot!

“Nemesis” heavy gunner frame

Rancorbait is definitely no stranger when it comes to mechs. We’ve featured the builder’s Gremlin mech in the past, and today’s entry is equally striking. It’s immediately clear who built this – Rancorbait’s styling is unmistakable. Also be sure to check out the alternate picture that uses some trickery to simulate gunfire.

Simply a tree house

Unless placing some pitiful planks on precariously low hanging branches count, I’ve never built a tree house. I’ve also never built the tree that holds up said house, nor constructed the ground beneath it. Jonas however has, with his latest creation: My Tree House

Arcadian, peaceful, and stunning, Jonas has designed a deceptively complex build that any ten year old child would love to call home–at least until it’s time for dinner.

Transforming LEGO Nemesis Prime is almost cute

Fans of Transformers will immediately recognise Nemesis Prime, the evil clone of the Autobot leader Optimus Prime, built by Japanese builder Moko. Brick-built Transformers have been featured before on TBB, but Moko’s build is a little bit different. Transformers originated as an animated television series in the 1980s. In the series Nemesis Prime is an evil, merciless killer …but oh my goodness, now he is super cute!

Moko has gone for the chibi feel with this build, yet manages to maintain accuracy and detail despite the diminutive stature. And as if that was not enough, his Nemesis Prime even transforms:

Salvage Buddy just wants to help you, scavenger scum

I’ve been playing a lot of the Binding of Isaac lately, so cute faces on otherwise serious creations has its hooks in me. That’s a small part of the reason this “Salvage Buddy” by Carter Baldwin is so great. The big, blocky head with the derpy face is a perfect contrast to the intricate arms which are promised to “strip a B-class freighter in under 6 hours!”

I don’t know if it’s intentional or not, but the back detailing seems to have an evil face built into it:

Has anyone seen a contact lens?

Looking like a Lovecraftian horror from Dark Souls or Bloodborne, “Lorpho the All-Seeing” from Jason Corlett is something you wouldn’t want to run into in an alley, regardless of the lighting conditions. The printed eye pieces from the LEGO Mixels product line have been a godsend for this type of model making, and it continues to be a theme which is adored for its selection of parts.

Don’t be a TR-8R h8ter

Builder nobu_tary pumping out awesome creations is no surprise, but the Internet fame that has been bestowed upon a relatively minor character in Star Wars: The Force Awakens is. Commonly referred to as TR-8R (pronounced ‘Traitor’) this was a Stormtrooper that had an ultimately tiny role and less than a minute of screen time. Yet the Internet has deemed him the darling character of the film and created (in addition to his unofficial name) an entire mythos around him.

While it has been postulated that the character of TR-8R has more colour in the novelisation of The Force Awakens, we have this LEGO version to gawk over until that is confirmed. It should be noted that this recreation is actually a heavily modified version of LEGO’s new First Order Stormtrooper action figure set. Nevertheless, the mods are a great improvement over the original. The builder even transformed the set into a Heavy Gunner:

LEGO Star Wars 75139 Battle on Takodana from the Force Awakens [Review]

The January 2016 LEGO sets continue to arrive on our doorstep, so we continue our flurry of new set reviews with 75139 Battle on Takodana. This new set from The Force Awakens was released on January 1st and retails for $59.99.

As I did when reviewing 75140 Resistance Troop Transporter and other recent LEGO Star Wars sets, I’ll bury the full review under the jump, but I WILL be referencing spoilers in this review. If you’re reading a LEGO Star Wars set review about a set from The Force Awakens nearly three weeks after the movie was released, I think it’s safe to assume you’ve seen the move.
