Taking the devilish dog out

I have no idea what the story is behind d’Qui Brick‘s Lone Druid creation. I don’t even know if that really is a dog, or some kind of sinister skeletal big-cat thing. But it doesn’t matter — this is a burly, beefy, terrifying beast of a model which makes excellent use of a mix of parts: Bionicle, Chima big-figs, and regular System bricks.

The face of the figure is particularly striking and I like the little touches of the hanging chains and skulls. The various spiky bits add an obvious menace, and the whole thing carries an unsettling sense of sinister heft. The only thing that doesn’t work for me is in the photography rather than the building itself — that black background might make for a moody setting, but it makes it difficult to see the details of the model.

Next gen Scuderia Ferrari races into the future

There’s only one thing better than mecha racing, and that’s mecha racing in a Ferrari. Gamabomb‘s latest creation is a brilliant four-legged “spider mech” fitted out in classic Scuderia Ferrari colors.

The model makes excellent use of stickered parts to create a genuine “racing car” feel, and the greebly mechanical details make for a believable-looking futuristic construction. I’m a big fan of the support work around the rear spoiler, and those little white wheels are magic. To cap off the great model and strong presentation, the builder has included an interesting technical description and a bit of backstory for the driver. Nice to see the sports of the future don’t let gender considerations stand in the way of talent…

Past his prime

Let’s face it, sometimes we like to root for the bad guy. Or bad robot — as envisioned by Joe Perez in this scene featuring an amazingly accurate and fully posable LEGO version of transformer Nemesis Prime.

Amusingly, Joe recently bought a Nemesis Prime action figure and was surprised how similar his version ended up in terms of detail and scale. And of course like the toy, his version also transforms!

Illustrating culture with LEGO

ArzLan shows us there is beauty in simplicity with this stunning build. Included are various representations of Chinese culture, with a seated figure playing the Ehru (a two-stringed fiddle). Also pictured is a Go board, and supplies for calligraphy and painting.

There are a number of eye catching things here; the seated figure stands out in bright red, and the scroll background has brick-built calligraphy.

I particularly love the dragon brush holder. It’s so fragile and perfectly executed.

Buckle your pants for this LEGO BattleBlock Theater cat guard!

If you’ve played BattleBlock Theater before, then you’ll definitely recognize this adorable cat guard built by Letranger Absurde. If you’ve haven’t played the game before, let me just say it’s pretty much exactly like soccer, except more like basketball, and nothing like soccer. Absurde perfectly captured the soulless gaze and boxy stature of the game’s heartless prison guards. I’d love to have this guy sitting on my desk at work. My productivity would likely triple under this little guy’s iron paw!

Not your run of the mill castle

I love LEGO castles, but I have to admit, they can get a little stale from time to time (especially the castles I build which tend to suffer from “big grey wall” syndrome). One of the simplest ways to build an exciting and fresh castle is to look at non-Medieval European castles for inspiration. That’s exactly what Marco den Besten did for his most recent build. Presumably using both Nordic and Asian culture as inspiration, Marco created an incredibly detailed and truly original castle that looks like you could find it hidden away in Middle Earth or possibly Azeroth.

Rosenwald Apartments are impressive and tiny

Microscale is challenging in its own right, despite it’s tiny tiny size. Rocco Buttliere is a master of this impressive scale, and we’ve featured his work before, notably with his Houses of Parliament and 40 Wall Street.

This newest addition to his tiny empire is certainly more understated than what we’ve featured before and no less impressive. The Rosenwald Apartments, named after former president of Sears and philanthropist Julius Rosenwald, feature lovely landscaping and the tiniest art deco I’ve ever seen. I particularly love the use of the grill tile, held in place presumably by sheer will, that gives the impression of tiny windows. It’s very effective!

Push it real good

There are a lot of sweet details on this vintage bulldozer model from Jakeof. Like the dual chain treads and their associated mechanical bits. And the subtle stickers that jazz up the side windows. And the little bits of cut flex tube everywhere. And the door handle, which looks like it might be the head of a minifig hammer. But the real highlight is the extremely old school brick used for the rear window. It’s amazing what you can do with a wide variety of parts and a little imagination.

Fish are food! Wait, no, that’s not right...

While we’re a little late for Shark Week, I think our toothy fishy friends deserve all the recognition we can muster. This shark from LEGO 7, I’m sure, does not agree with Bruce’s claim that fish are friends and is perfectly happy to snack on whatever he finds in this sunken ship.

You’re welcome to ask him and his friends if they’ll share that treasure. I’m inclined to say no.

The shark has just lovely shaping to it. It looks perfectly pudgy, like a shark should be. The varied sea life growing on the ship is quite eye catching, too!

Barreling along

Graham Gidman reconstructs the barrel escape scene from The Hobbit with stunning landscaping techniques. The use of the SNOT techniques to sculpt the rock formations creates an organic look to the landscape. The flow of the water blends seamlessly with the rocks to the point that it looks like actual water from afar. Take a closer look and you’ll appreciate the fine craftsmanship of this build.

Jongno Tower in Seoul, South Korea

Jongno Tower is a unique office building in Seoul designed by architect Rafael Viñoly and completed in 1999. bigcrown85 has faithfully recreated the structure in LEGO, with extensive use of transparent blue bricks. Similarly, the outer structural elements of the building use numerous LEGO struts, demonstrating that repetition is often a key element of achieving a real-world look in a LEGO creation.

Even the trees at ground level use some interesting techniques.

The Vaygr fleet appears out of hyperspace

Tim Schwalfenberg worked on a massive Homeworld-inspired fleet of LEGO spaceships leading up to Brickworld Chicago last month, and we posted a couple of the great ships that make up the fleet, including the corvette and missile frigate. The full fleet is incredibly impressive, with the addition of a battleship and carrier.

The carrier is worth a closer look in particular, with a red and white color scheme that ties it together with the rest of the fleet, along with a shock of yellow. Tim has incorporated some custom 3D-printed elements into the greebles. Can you spot them?
