Announcing TBB’s history of LEGO + updated glossary [News]

Did you know that LEGO finally stopped making wooden toys in 1960 when the wooden toy warehouse burned down? What year did LEGO release its first minifigure? When did From Bricks to Bothans start? What in the sacred name of Ole Kirk Christiansen was Galidor? If you’ve ever wanted answers to these and other key questions of 20th-century and early 21st-century world history, you need look no further than The Brothers Brick’s new history of LEGO & the LEGO fan community page.

375 Yellow Castle

The page starts in 1932 and is up to date through the end of 2016, though we’re confident that there are a lot of important dates and events we’ve missed along the way. We’ll be adding more information based on your feedback and as we uncover more sources like Dave Eaton‘s “AFOL History Project.”

We’ve also updated and expanded our LEGO dictionary of AFOL jargon, with double the entries of the previous version, including entries for the commonly used names for lots of parts and building techniques.

First look at LEGO sets from Disney’s upcoming film Moana [News]

Disney’s newest animated feature, Moana, is the story of a little girl from the Pacific Islands who encounters a demigod on her journey to save her people. The movie comes out this Wednesday, but we haven’t gotten a good official look at the LEGO sets accompanying it until now. There are two sets, each featuring Moana (voiced by Auli’i Cravalho) as a minidoll, and the larger set also features demigod Maui (voiced by Dwayne Johnson) as a large, Hulk-style figure. We’ll be bringing you an early hands-on review of both sets in a few weeks, before they’re due to hit stores.

Huge LEGO Technic Fighter Jet and more revealed for 2017 [News]

We got a look at 7 of 2017’s new LEGO Technic sets last week, but LEGO still has more surprises to come. Here are 2 more all-new Technic sets, including an awesome Air Race Jet that cops some design cues from the new F-35, such as a thrust-vectoring nozzle for VTOL capabilities. The other set is a more utilitarian vehicle; a Telehandler bucket loader. Both kits have alternate builds, and we’ve got lots of images showing their working functions.

Grand Admiral Thrawn joins the LEGO Star Wars canon in 2017 [News]

One of the few frustrating things about the release of The Force Awakens last year was the fact that LucasFilm reset the long-established Star Wars timeline by eliminating much of the Expanded Universe from the official canon, leaving only the movies and recent animated TV series (Clone Wars and Rebels). Left by the wayside were some truly amazing stories and characters, not least of which the Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn, with characters like Mara Jade and Grand Admiral Thrawn himself. Longtime Star Wars fans rejoiced recently when it was announced that Thrawn would be re-canonized by appearing in the upcoming season of Rebels.

With fantastic LEGO sets based on the series like 75150 Vader’s TIE Advanced vs. A-wing Starfighter taking up a significant proportion of the LEGO Star Wars product line now, a Grand Admiral Thrawn minifig couldn’t have been far behind, and that suspicion has been confirmed with another batch of sets revealed today, including 75170 The Phantom, with Thrawn, alongside Kanan Jarrus wearing a cool mask.

Blocks magazine Issue 26 is already on the coffee tables of subscribers and goes on-sale today at all fine magazine emporiums. To celebrate the return to the wizarding world of Harry Potter as Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them hits cinema screens, Blocks indulges in a trip down memory lane to re-visit every LEGO version of Hogwarts Castle ever released – and combine them into one mega display. LEGO Dimensions producer Mark Warburton talks about bringing the new movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them into the gaming multiverse. In “Fantastic Beasts and How to Build Them”, Blocks presents another impressive selection of bespoke LEGO builds, inspired by the various creatures documented by Newt Scamander.

World’s largest LEGO store opens in London’s Leicester Square [News]

Today the world’s largest LEGO store opens in Leicester Square, within the bustling heart of London. The Brothers Brick were invited to an exclusive pre-opening event to take a tour of the new store, preview the exclusive London skyline set, and talk to Glenn Abell (LEGO’s Vice President of Direct To Consumer) about the future of LEGO’s retailing.

The London flagship store is the largest in the world, covering 914 sqm over two floors, and features a number of signature brick sculptures — all themed to the City of London. The doors open onto an archway with the classic London Underground sign stating “Leicester Square” and a map of the London Underground lights up one wall.
