A brick-built bouquet fit for a bride

In a world of spaceships, castles and mecha it can be unclear that LEGO building is a form of art. This is why we have builders like Felix Jaensch, who remind us of the artistic potential of LEGO. The flowers are arranged perfectly with just enough imperfections to look natural. The only part that looks off to me are the leaves, but I do admit it is hard to make them look realistic.

Felix is well known for his simplistic style, mostly using only bricks and plates to accomplish complex shapes, with some of his best work featuring a life sized LEGO mummy, a blue and gold macaw and more recently a very cute red panda. If you like LEGO art, Felix is surely a builder you’ll want to follow.

In love of home, the love of country has its rise

This beautiful digital rendering of a Victorian dream home by buggyirk is something straight out of a Dickensian novel. Stunning stained-glass windows and lively gardens draw your eyes into this delicately decorated delight, a weather vane is perched atop the pointed roof of the tower, which complements the multi-gabled roof and lovely designs under the eaves.

Inside is where this model really shines, with masterfully styled Victorian furniture including a grandfather clock, bed, bookcase with candles, baby crib, fireplace and chandelier — each on its own enough to make me want to move in, but that incredible staircase is the icing on the cake. Like many homes, its heart is in the dining room where Mother, Father and Junior enjoy a happy brick-tricious meal together. I have never wanted to own a Victorian home so badly before today.

Classic Space Command Module Crawling Thingie

Bongobert has created a retro looking classic space styled crawling command module rover whatsit. It’s caterpillar treads look like they could tear up whatever planet, moon or asteroid it was stationed on. This creature-like rover sits high allowing the pilots better visibility and better reception for the TV News-van’s worth of antennas and dishes on the roof. The DenWad has a crane apparatus capable of removing the command module, presumably allowing the vehicle itself to trek out in search of space things while the command module commands. Packed with tools to enable the astronauts to repair their monster in the field, this whatchamacallit looks like it could handle anything space could throw at it.

Modern part usage, subtle greebling and other newer techniques give it a futuristic feel while the exposed studs give the classic space feel that makes me (us?) nostalgic for the early 80s.

A decaying relic of a time long ago

One of the scenes I found most interesting in Star Wars: The Force Awakens was the sight of an Imperial star destroyer rusting into oblivion on Jakku. I imagined other relics of the fallen Empire scattered and forgotten on planets throughout the galaxy. Austrian builder sanellukovic does a fantastic job expanding this element of the story with his depiction of a derelict Imperial shuttle.

The builder has taken the UCS Imperial Shuttle design and turned it into an ugly, rusting pile of junk – and I mean that in high admiration. A lot of builders (including myself) would have felt just fine breaking the shuttle apart, scattering it across a landscape scene and calling it good. This builder, however, went so much further, creating a scene so full of character I wish it had been in the movie. Note the busted windshield, rust patterns and jungle overgrowth. The ship’s layout is spot-on, particularly the crumpled wings and the way the dorsal stabilizer leans forward as if it was just barely holding together.

The jungle looks wonderful too and adds a nice sense of mystery and abandonment to the creation. How exciting it would be to stumble upon this during a trek through the woods!

Game Of Thrones opening titles recreated in LEGO

Jonas Kramm has built four fabulous microscale LEGO versions of iconic castles from the opening titles of Game Of Thrones. Winterfell, The Twins, Castle Black & The Wall, and King’s Landing all get the brick treatment, built into a set of smartly-panelled bases. The southern capital of Westoros is unmistakable — all blood red walls and gold detailing, exactly as it appears in the show’s opening…

Winterfell is also beautifully done, particularly the Weirwood tree in the castle’s Godswood…

An artistic take on the classic space shuttle

Have you ever looked at a piece of art in a museum and initially thought, “that thing is downright ugly.” But then the longer you look at it, the more interesting it becomes? Well, I had that exact same experience when I first looked at F@bz‘s strange pizza slice-shaped space shuttle. At first, I couldn’t get over the bland palette and the fact that the rear end looks like two futuristic electric razors.

But then I looked again and I couldn’t stop looking at it. This ship has some amazing details and somehow, the longer you look at it, the better it gets. I love how F@bz incorporated several of the new Nexo Knight pieces directly into his ship, and then mimicked their unique shapes throughout the entire build. Also, if you look closely, you can see the builder stealthily included his self-portrait in the final product (like many great artists have done before him).

Handy LEGO Harry Potter Christmas tree ornaments

It’s Christmas time and preparations are well under way in the LEGO building world. Markus Rollbühler‘s collection of Christmas ornaments for his family’s Christmas tree are complete and this year’s theme is Harry Potter. Thankfully Markus has stuck with some of the lighter moments from each of the seven Harry Potter boks, a challenge especially given darker nature of the later books. Microbuilds are often a real building test requiring ingenuity and a real knowledge of all the LEGO parts – Markus has both. Blades from minifigure weapons become wings, minifigure hands become quidditch players in flight and the trigger for a stud shooter becomes Buckbeak’s head!

Get away from her, you bricks!

The power loader from Aliens is difficult to pull off at minifig scale because of the inherent lack of movement in a minifig. But Daniel Schlumpp has done a darned good job with this LEGO version, as well as an appropriate Xenomorph alien to go with it.

A refreshing return to Cloud City

With Rogue One having just been released, I’m in a Star Wars mood. While there’s been a lot of both fan builds and official LEGO sets from the movie already, Eric Druon is going in a more nostalgic direction with a charming diorama of Cloud City (Bespin) from The Empire Strikes Back.

While not a sweeping recreation of the entire city, all the important elements are here: the meeting with Vader, the carbon freezing chamber, the Cloud Car, and a few other little details.

Make sure to check out the builder’s photostream to see each segment of the build in detail. It seems to have been created in a modular fashion so each scene can be displayed on its own. Also check out Eric’s Death Star play set that we featured recently.

These longships sail the icy north wind

Classic Castle’s 14th Colossal Castle Contest comes to an end December 31st, and we’re seeing a ton of great builds as the competition winds down. Builders are vying for prizes and titles in a number of castle-related categories. Some of the best entries I’ve seen are in the Medieval Warship category. When I was a kid I dreamed of being a Viking, so longships are a particular favorite of mine. Mark of Falworth brings us a great ship with his Moravian Warknar:

I’ve also entered my own, though my Viking sailors didn’t make it on board for photographs before a mishap resulted in the ship’s destruction.

What stands out about all three ships is the lack of the prefabricated hull pieces common in many designs. Brick-built hulls are time-consuming and can be challenging, but the flexibility in hull shape and design really pays off.
