Little church perfect for your little ant friends

LEGO builders can sometimes overcomplicate things, perhaps ignoring simple techniques because they feel obvious, regardless of how effective they might be. However, this microscale Lego church by Jens Ohrndorf goes to show you don’t need a thousand pieces and complex techniques to create something excellent. We’ve seen it before, but the minifigure hairpieces make for perfect treetops, and then there’s the use of the 1×2 brick with groove as the side windows — a simple yet effective parts choice.

I always enjoy making a Christmas-themed build when the season comes around, and having built a Santa’s arrival scene last year that would be hard to top (even if I do say so myself), I wanted to do something a bit different and more fun this year. I’ve had those minifigures from the LEGO Star Wars advent calendars sitting on top of my shelf for quite a while, so this was the perfect chance to put one of them to use. Plus I’ve always wanted to build a Bantha.

Market District – Ring of Kafrene from Star Wars Rogue One

I have always loved the look and feel of the lower levels on Star Wars planets like Coruscant, and while this scene by {eeza} isn’t exactly that — it’s based on the Ring of Kafrene mining outpost featured in Rogue One — it still has that underworld, black market slums feel I so adore. The lighting is very well done, giving off an appropriate colored glow from each of the shady shops.

My favorite part of the scene has to be the droid parts booth, complete with the assorted droid parts for sale. However, don’t miss the leftmost green stall next to Cassian Andor, which appears to be selling Gorgs to snack on.

Say hello to my feathered friend

One thing’s for sure, you can always count on Tyler Clites for fun holiday themed builds, and his latest tactical turkey is no exception. I like Tyler’s simple yet effective solution for the bandolier and while easy to overlook, the single round sticking out of the out of the side of the machine gun is a nice touch. My favorite part has to be the determined facial expression and furrowed eyebrows, making this turkey look determined to live another year.

New LEGO Architecture 21039 Shanghai Set Revealed [News]

An image has surfaced today of the latest LEGO Architecture 21039 set depicting Shanghai, China. From left to right, the set includes what appears to be Longhua Temple, The Bund, The Oriental Pearl Radio&TV Tower, The Shanghai World Financial Center, and Shanghai Tower.

The set will be available worldwide on January 1, 2018. However, if you’re lucky enough to be in Shanghai on December 2, 2017, make sure to visit the Shanghai Disneyland LEGO flagship store to get your copy of the set a month ahead of the rest of the world signed by the design lead for the Architecture series Jamie Berard!

Sector is clear...Not clear! Not clear!

h2brick has created what has become quite an iconic scene from the Star Wars Battlefront 2 Gameplay Trailer, depicting the moment Darth Maul shows up to ruin the sectors clearness. The build makes use of surprisingly few new and specialized parts, but still captures the aesthetic of a battle damaged Naboo perfectly. I particularly like the addition of the simple yet quite accurate AT-RT walker.

“What happened to your lights? and...blueness?” “I’m too cool for those now”

While I haven’t seen it yet, the new movie Blade Runner 2049 does look quite awesome. However, I will admit I was a bit disappointed when I saw the new spinner sans all blueness and police lights, to me there’s nothing cooler than a white and black (or blue in this case) speeding down the road lights flashing, sirens blaring. Nonetheless, Marius Herrmann has done an amazing job building the new spinner in LEGO form. I love the unusual use of cut fiber optic cable as lights on the front nacelles.

The builder also managed to take a scene from the trailer, and using Photoshop, remove the real spinner and person from the scene, replacing it with his own. The result looks fantastic and could easily be mistaken for a real life setup.

She may look like the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy, but she ain’t

I don’t think Hannes Tscharner has ever taken a photo that didn’t look amazing, and his most recent YT 1300 freighter is no exception, not to mention the build is first-rate as well. The model is a take off of his original 7,500 piece Millennium Falcon build, meant to be a modified version from the same family of ships, likely used by another crew of space smuggling experts.

The red trim on the craft is very eye catching, and the photography is exquisite. It seems like the “Red Fox” as the builder has named it, has run into an asteroid field, perhaps trying to lose some imperial TIE fighters.

Blue & green, small but mean, she’ll shoot you down right to Georgetown

Generally, in life, bigger is usually better. However, that is not the case with this neat little starfighter by TOKYO TAG TEAM. The build is a wonderful blend of colors, shapes, and angles compacted into a very small package, but for me, it’s the stickers that really set the build apart — I dig the little symbols plastered over different parts of the fighter. In particular, the use of the long blue stickers on the windscreen were an excellent design choice. Without them, the windscreen would likely feel very bland.

After close inspection, I am only left wondering how the pilot steers the craft. Neuro-controlled maybe? That’s probably it.

What do you get when you combine Star Wars, a weird black blob thing, some creatures, and lava?

The answer: You get a Hag Titan, or more precisely, this spacecraft by Shannon Sproule. Built for the annual SHIPtember building challenge, it just goes to show you don’t need thousands of pieces to make an interesting SHIP (Significantly Huge Investment in Parts). I love the way it looks like a half-mechanical, yet half-alive alien creature.

Early in the build process, Shannon made a neat collage showing some of his inspiration sources for the ship, including a Star Wars Trade Federation transport and a weird black blob with tendrils that is likely some kind of parasite (a shark’s egg case, actually), various creatures, and various lava fortresses. It is interesting to try and spot how each inspiration had small effects on the final build.

Though she’s called The Nadir, she looks like the acme

I apologize for my supercilious vocabulary, but Swedish builder o0ger has named his most recent YT Corellian Light Freighter-inspired spacecraft “The Nadir” which, by definition, pretty much means rock-bottom. Either the owner of this ship has very high expectations, or nadir means something else in Swedish, because this ship is quite remarkable, and I don’t see why it wouldn’t be the crown of any space shipping fleet. The integration of the cockpit into the side wing is superb, and there is just the right amount of color throughout.

As I saw the enemy closing in, I pulled out my Luger for one final stand....

Have you ever watched a movie about a “bad guy”, but by the end of the movie, despite the terrible things he has done, you almost want him to get away? That is exactly how I feel while looking at this World War 2 scene by ~J2J~ depicting the final stand of a German tanker as American troops close in. The builder does an excellent job of telling a story with one small scene by coordinating small details throughout. The fire, smoke, a dead German soldier in the background — all allow us to accurately infer the sequence of events that likely led to this moment, making the scene quite dramatic and emotion evoking.
