Complete set of LEGO Space X rockets and vehicles – Go for launch!

Space and space exploration is also a very popular subject when it comes to LEGO creations. Valerie Roche and Matthew Nolan have designed a collection of SpaceX vehicles and put it on LEGO’s crowd-sourcing platform Ideas, where it’s already well on its way towards the needed 10,000 supporters. One of the coolest things about this project is that the designers have received input from people working on the real SpaceX program to help make the models even more accurate.

Massive collaborative LEGO project shows Vikings invading a Spanish village

Group LEGO building projects are a great way to create something much more impressive than what an individual builder might accomplish, and this recent collaboration between a group of builders called The Brickstons and several friends from the LEGO club ALE is a great example. Considering that there were 14 builders involved, the scene is very well designed, with carefully laid out building standards and many unifying design elements helping everything fit together. This isn’t their first experience with large displays though, and we highlighted their 1930s Harlem display last month.

The diorama portrays a Viking raid on the coast of Spain in approximately the year 859, a real historic event. The villa shown here isn’t any specific port, but rather an amalgamation of what a typical village in the Umayyad Caliphate of Córdoba would have looked like at the time.

Posable Arale and Gatchan figures are super cute

Arale Norimaki is a fictional character from the Dr. Slump manga series, created by Akira Toriyama. Arale is a robot girl who is strong, energetic and a bit naive. This playful model by LEGO 7 — which also features two Gatchan, or Gajira Norimaki — is a wonderful tribute to these unique characters, who make an occasional appearance on the popular anime Dragon Ball from the same creator.

One of my favorite details is the use of a white rubber band wrapped around Arale’s ankles as a rumpled sock. The simple construction of her gloved hands, made from only 6 parts each is another nice touch. On the Gatchan, an inverted yellow chair forms a bib for this critter who is known to eat just about anything.

LEGO 7 has tweaked the model just a bit to give us a very dynamic and especially playful scene.

One tasty cup of coffee makes the day better

This wonderfully detailed coffee stand by LEGO 7 does not have a single brick out of place — from the hanging glasses rack to the roasting machine in back to those delicious pastries on display. Even the custom stickers and the logo on the apron of the baristas are a perfect choice.

Tim Murphy with night-vision googles in BrickHeadz style

Ever since the premiere of Jurassic Park 25 years ago dinosaur fans have been thrilled and amazed to see the evolution of visual effects bring these creatures to life on the big screen. With the newest installment, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, opening in theaters this weekend, this tribute to John Hammond’s grandson Tim Murphy by Maru C in BrickHeadz style is a perfect addition to the growing list of fan creations depicting some of our favorite characters and personalities.

Adorable Hazmat worker in BrickHeadz style

Usually, fan-built BrickHeadz models feature well-known public figures or fictional characters from pop culture, like The Little Mermaid, Scooby Doo & Shaggy, Rose Tico and Jar Jar, and my own Trump and Putin BrickHeadz. For a nice change, this Hazmat responder by √erde’ is a really well-designed model true to the BrickHeadz aesthetic while clearly depicting the Hazmat uniform. Armed with what looks like a flame-thrower, humanity is safe from any potential outbreak.

One of my favorite details is the simple use of hinge plates in two colors to form the life support tube on the front, and he has a complete life support system on his back.

Blockis and Brickhead – Beavis and Butthead in BrickHeadz style

Ever since the BrickHeadz sets were first revealed at comic conventions in 2016 they have exploded from 4 sets that year, to 22 sets in 2017, to 40 so far in 2018, and it’s only June! And they’ve featured a wide variety of popular culture icons and movie favorites, from Star Wars, Disney princesses, the Marvel universe, and even 80’s films like Back to the Future and Ghostbusters.

With this frenzy, we have also seen an explosion of fan creations built in the same style, and many of these have been featured here on TBB before. This perfect pair of cartoon hooligans Beavis and Butthead, by Julius von Brunk, are a great addition to this growing collection of fan creations.

The builder has made some very well thought out design decisions worth noting. The height of the standard BrickHeadz model has been stretched a bit, which is the perfect choice considering how tall and lanky they are in cartoon form. Also, Butthead has a very distinctive mop of hair making him even taller than Beavis.

A small but mighty Destiny

This sleek craft by CK-MCMLXXXI is a study in symmetry. Not only left to right along the central axis, as is more common in spaceship design, but also top to bottom. It feels like that solid white canopy at the front, combined with that 45-degree wedge plate was the central element to inspire this design. Regardless of where the idea came from, this craft is jammed with great greebly bits in a variety of colors, some really nice connections, and plenty of curved elements that give the vessel a refined, yet functional look.

Black Widow spider on the hunt

Sometimes, a relatively simple build can have a big impact. This scene built by Lennart C and inspired by nature is a great example. This black widow spider looking to make a meal of a nearby fly is both beautiful and terrifyingly realistic, which is no easy accomplishment considering how few parts are involved. One of my favorite details is the simple choice of using that longer arm piece for the two back legs, giving the body a more pronounced slope. And speaking of the fly, only six parts are used, but the effect is perfect.

Just one warning. I wouldn’t stomp on this spider if I were you, it would probably hurt you more than the spider.

High speed chase through the gritty streets of Corellia

Going in to see Solo: A Star Wars Story with managed expectations, I loved this movie! And the speeder sets for Han Solo and Moloch released in the first wave were some of the best speeders to come out of the franchise, in my opinion. Apparently, h2brick is also a big fan, having built this great street scene featuring Han and Qi’ra careening along pursued by a patrol speeder. There are a lot of nice details throughout this dark gray scene, including a few toppled containers spilling something unhealthy onto the street, and plenty of discarded debris.

Stunning model of the Sirius, featured in Tintin books.

The Sirius is a fictional vessel first appearing in the Tintin graphic novel The Shooting Star, and later in The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham’s Treasure. It was named after the SS Sirius, the first steam-powered ship to cross the Atlantic under its own power. This wonderfully detailed boat by Stefan Johansson is so accurate compared to images of the vessel John-O.88, a trawler that inspired the author, that it is easy to mistake it for a wooden model.

The curved hull is particularly impressive, along with the riggings, made up of various lengths of LEGO string elements. On deck, Tintin is ready to plunge into the depths in his diving suit, while Snowy, Thomson (or Thompson?) and Captain Haddock look on.

A mighty high castle in the clouds

One of the things that can really set a castle apart are the little architectural details — window frames, a well-crafted wall, bridges, and parapets. This stunning creation by Fraser Ratzlaff has all this and more. At a glance, it might seem like this castle in the clouds has to be microscale, but make no mistake, this minifig-scale castle is nine feet tall! One of the most impressive things about this castle is the support, made entirely of official LEGO bricks.
