The D9 Dragonfly Hoverdrone is locked on target

For the past six months or so, Taylor Walker has been working on a series of LEGO models in his own “Space Defense Force” theme. His latest creation is this excellent hoverdrone, which looks like a bulked up dragonfly (thus the name, I guess), complete with big buggy eyes and a long tail.

In case you missed them, his earlier Space Defense Force creations are well worth a look in Taylor’s Flickr album. His S27 Buzzard starfighter clearly shares a design aesthetic with the Dragonfly, but has a unique design of its own, with swept-forward wings and larger blocks of dark gray.

This paunchy black dragon has a spare tire

This intriguing looking black dragon by Al Fi has clearly been enjoying a few too many dragon snacks, as that oversized paunch reveals. The builder has mainly used Bionicle parts for this unusual creation, but some LEGO System and Technic elements are present too. I say ‘unusual’ as it’s not often you see a couple of tires used to form the central stomach area of a creature in this manner!

It’s worth having a look at the rear side of this dragon to see some more lovely shaping and spiky details. The purple and pearl grey highlights are just enough to break up the black without making this dragon look too much like a LEGO Friends creation!

Four seasons in LEGO

As I sit here, patiently waiting for the first bit autumn storms to arrive, I see the leaves changing color and the rain falling. I absolutely love the changing of the seasons. They’re all wonderful for different reasons. I adore autumn because it means that winter is almost here.

Galaktek has illustrated the changing of the seasons beautifully in this little vignette. It features a microscale central keep, surrounded by four valleys, each featuring a season. There is more, though, than you see initially to the build.

This LEGO warehouse is very palatable

Who doesn’t love a highly organized system of interlocking pallets? Warehouses are a marvel of modern engineering, with flurries of activity and pedantic levels of organization, and LEGO builder Norton74 says he recently visited a large warehouse and wanted to translate the scene into bricks. His use of the 1×1 Technic bricks for the adjustable shelving unit legs is great, and I love the clever way the he imitates cardboard box lids by not pressing the tiles all the way down.

Han Solo & Chewbacca’s massive Erevana in UCS-scale LEGO

In The Force Awakens, a massive ship suddenly looms over the Millennium Falcon as Rey pilots the venerable freighter away from Jakku. The enormous ship swallows the Falcon whole. It’s not until a few moments later that we realize just who was piloting the Baleen-class heavy freighter dubbed Erevana. I’ve wanted to see a LEGO Erevana ever since I saw The Force Awakens, and nearly a year later Forgotten Days has granted my wish. This LEGO Erevana is massive enough to swallow a LEGO Millennium Falcon — though a microscale one to be sure. The non-repetitive cargo containers behind the main hangar bay section add nice blocks of color and texture to an otherwise “boring” cargo freighter.

An adorable tsar on his adorable little throne

You don’t usually put the words “tsar” and “adorable” in one sentence, but here is the exception… This LEGO tsar is adorable! A charming sketch by vir-a-cocha depicts the famous Tsar Gorokh from Russian fairy tales. A little bit shy, a little bit silly and naive — all these traits are perfectly conveyed using a handful of pieces.

If you take a closer look you may notice that this figure features no regular bricks or plates. That’s because this creation was an entry in a local building contest, where builders were not allowed to use any basic pieces. The result is an outstanding mixture of modified plates and hinges that simply puts a smile on your face.

A wild Oddish appears

Whether from the recent Pokémon Go fad, or from the past twenty years of catching them all in other Pokémon adventures, this LEGO Oddish built by Tyler Halliwell is instantly recognizable. I love the way Tyler built the adorable little face of this grass/poison type Pokémon. How could one possibly throw Pokéball after Pokéball directly at a Pokémon this happy?

Mr T and his fab Model T Ford

Mr T is looking suitably pleased with himself in this great little scene by Calin. I’m not surprised that he has caught the eye of a fair lady who happens to be strolling nearby. His shiny Model T Ford is a lovely build with some fab parts usage.

I love the little details that Calin always brings to his builds, in this case, the rubber band across the windscreen is a lovely touch. Also, in case you haven’t realised, the wheel base is the Fabuland car chasis. What a great way to turn a comedy Fabuland car into a classy classic car.

LEGO unveils 21306 The Beatles Yellow Submarine [News]

This morning, LEGO unveiled pictures and information for the upcoming LEGO Ideas set, 21306 Yellow Submarine, which should make every Beatles fan very very happy. This idea was announced as a future set in June this year. The set will be available beginning November 1, and will cost USD $59.99 (EUR 59,99 / GBP 49.99) for 550 parts. The set includes 4 minifigures plus a little character.

A fine day out with the family on Troth Prime

It’s not often we get to see the family life of the explorers and scientists who populate the world of Neo-Classic Space. This little scene by Sad Brick makes me very happy, though, with a couple and their little blue and green children. There’s even a robot dog, who’s managed to uncover an alien bone of some sort. As enamored as I am with the scene overall, the speeder in the background is excellent — particularly the steps on the side that make it easier for those space-tots to clamber aboard. And with a truly massive bank of engines, I expect the vehicle to blast across the alien landscape at quite a quick clip.

Not all of Sad Brick’s NCS scenes are as peaceful. A tragic friendly fire incident is about to occur in this scene featuring some excellent vehicles.

Droogs, viddy this horrorshow Clockwork Orange sculpture

Meet Alex. Alex is the main character in Anthony Burgess’ novel A Clockwork Orange (later immortalized in film by Stanley Kubrick). Alex is depicted as a sociopath who robs, rapes, and assaults innocent people for his own amusement. David Hughes‘ LEGO sculpture of Alex is inspired by the 1972 book cover and I think his decision to stick with simple monotone shades and skin tone works very well.

The sculpture itself uses over 2,700 bricks and is 15″ wide x 12″ deep x 17″ high. And while the eye and eye-liner are certainly eye-catching, I particularly like the shaping of the Bowler hat.

You have 5 seconds to comply.. 4.. 3.. 2.. 1..

Grantmasters is back with another scene from that 1980s classic movie, Robocop. This time the action takes place in the boardroom with the infamous line spoken by ED-209: “You have 5 seconds to comply.. 4.. 3.. 2.. 1.. I am now authorized to use physical force“. Although the ED-209 robot is a fantastic little build, the micro Delta City is my favourite part of this scene. Great parts in microscale, and a welcome change from seeing the white life preserver part used as a toilet seat!
