Long before LEGO released Marvel and DC Universe Superheroes sets, LEGO fans were building their own Batmobiles and Batcaves, custom Avengers and X-men. Whether you’re looking for news about the official sets or want to check out some really great custom LEGO models inspired by the world of comic books, you’ve come to the right place.

Rolling through the blasted landscape with Horace Cheng

With everybody distracted by shiny Cave Racers, it seems the end of the world has been staved off for a while, or so it would seem from the dearth of decent ApocaLEGO lately.

Fortunately for us, Horace Cheng has taken his recent snowmobile design and added a bunch of stuff to make it zombie-proof:

Monkey Man takes on Black Puma

It’s the oldest trick in the book. Simian superhero lures feline antihero in a high-speed chase down a city street. Hero places peel of yellow tropical fruit on the ground. Mayhem and hilarity ensue.

Jordan “SirNadroj” Schwartz puts Monkey Man in a slippery situation with “Monkey Man vs. Black Puma”:

“You forgot one very important thing, mate...I’m Captain Jack Sparrow.”

Well, you can’t forget that with this incredible bust by Craig Stevens

He’s done another captain too!

Minifig Spawn

My Spawn minifig was inspired by a conversation I had a while back with Drew Ellis. He suggested Bane from 7787 The Bat-Tank would make an excellent Spawn. I’m inclined to agree:

Custom desert camo Tumbler by Brent Waller

It’s not often we feature LEGO that’s been painted to achieve the builder’s intended effect. But occasionally, like Jamie’s Dardenbahst, a customized creation rises above the rest and gets my grudging vote of approval. ;-)

Check out Brent Waller‘s rendition of the Batmobile “Tumbler” from Batman Begins:

New Paint Job

Because LEGO doesn’t make the pieces he needed in tan, Brent built the Tumbler in white and light gray, and then painted the pieces tan with vinyl dye. He then layered the camouflage on top of the tan paint. The end result of this labor-intensive process is the spot-on Tumbler you see above.

If the customized version isn’t your thing, here’s Brent’s black version:

Moko’s Kamen Rider

Long before the Power Rangers leapt across the Pacific onto American TV screens, Japanese TV was dominated by series after series of superhero shows, not least of which was Kamen (Masked) Rider.

Moko goes retro with his latest creation, an homage to the very first Kamen Rider:

From 1971 through today, Kamen Rider, his motorcycles, and the monsters he fights have been an integral part of the childhood of every child who grew up in Japan. That includes me, and this large-scale figure brings back a lot of great memories.

LEGO+Plastic Man=Duh

Here’s another great entry for the Heroes & Villains challenge — Plastic Man as a steam shovel!

Gambit’s ’87 Oldsmobile Cutlass, by Nathan Proudlove

How did I miss this?! I’ll admit to being a bit behind, so MasterGongfu‘s link to this great LUGNuts Heroes & Villains entry by Nathan Proudlove was very much appreciated.

The dominating feature on this great car is of course the roof — a brick-built Ace of Spades that begs the question, are decals and stickers ever necessary when something like this is possible?

Update (AB): Ace Kim also has extensive pictures from Toy Fair 2008, nicely organized into photosets with lots of great details — prices, release dates, etc.:
