Welcome home to Batman: Arkham Asylum

Many people know the only thing I love almost as much as LEGO is Batman. And what do I like more than LEGO? Batman LEGO!

So it came as a wonderful surprise to see this magnificent 18,000 piece master piece build of Arkham Asylum by Australian builder Dayton (Forgotten Day):

It took Dayton years of planning and three frantic months of ordering parts and building to get this tribute to the Dark Knight done by to unveil at Brickvention. I really love the attention to detail he’s put in, such as the sedimentary layers in the ground on the side of the build – usually an area not viewed, so it’s that added touch that makes this really nice.

And there are some wonderful techniques scattered throughout, the most ingenious (why didn’t I ever think of that?) is the construction of the fence, so simple, with headlight bricks and a rod, yet so brilliantly detailed and executed.

New LEGO 1966 Batman Batcave officially announced! [News]

Tired of your LEGO Superheroes being modern, dark, and gritty? Well, LEGO has just the solution: a fully loaded Batcave from the 1966 Batman TV series starring Adam West and Burt Ward. KAPOW! The set will have 2,526 pieces including 9 minifigures, and will retail for $269.99 USD. It’s set to be available in March. The full press release and photos are below.

Yes father, I will become a Bat... a Bat-Robot-Mech-Thing

Gregory St doesn’t post Flickr images often, but this Batman mech caught my eye. I think it does well at being chunky and slightly menacing, but still fun and comic-book like. I could see this leaping off the page of a classic-era Batman comic, rather than stalking the gloomy streets of the po-faced movie version of Gotham. This is what Batman should be about – a sense of menace and impending violence, accompanied by a faint whiff of camp ridiculousness…

Looking back through their Flickr stream, I’ve enjoyed seeing how the builder has posted different designs all based on the same mech frame. It’s interesting to see how color choices and changes in little details can create a totally different feel from the same base structure. In particular, I liked their interpretation of Lord Business from the LEGO Movie a while back…

I’d like to see more of these builds. Maybe some other comic book heroes?

January 2016 LEGO sets now available [News]

It’s the first day of the new year, which means that the January 2016 assortment of LEGO sets is now officially available. Highlights include more LEGO Star Wars sets from The Force Awakens, the brand new NEXO Knights theme, new Creator sets, and more.

76046 Heroes of Justice: Sky High Battle [Review]

The divisive Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is nearly upon us, and it brings a new wave of LEGO Superhero sets. You can see the full collection in LEGO’s Spring Catalog. Today we’re reviewing 76046 Heroes of Justice: Sky High Battle. (Yes, that’s really its name.) It will retail for $59.99 USD and includes 517 pieces. Those pieces build a Batwing and Lex Luthor’s helicoptor, and you’ll get five minifigs: Lex Luthor, Lois Lane, Wonder Woman, Superman, and Batman.

Here’s the official LEGO catalogue for January to June of 2016 [News]

Following our previous story about rough pictures taken of the German LEGO catalogue for 2016, we now have the genuine article from LEGO in PDF form, this time in English.

This is a carbon copy of the printed catalogues that will appear in stores. There are dozens of new sets, including a new wave of Elves featuring dragons, plenty of new City, Creator, and Friends sets, new Batman V Superman and Marvel pantheon Superhero sets, and a lot more.

LEGO Pikachu Superman

Like our recent post of a classic space mecha dinosaur, this one mashes up quite a few things. Courtesy of Greed (승훈 이) we have a Pikachu that has taken to dressing up like Superman. Maybe this takes inspiration from the “cosplay Pikachu” mechanic from the new Pokémon games. Regardless, mixing up three franchises that I’m a huge fan of is a definite win for me.

A few of the 2016 LEGO Superhero sets have finally been unveiled.

76049 Avenjet Space Mission
The similarities between this set and 76028 Darkseid Invasion are striking: four minifigs, a bigfig and some kind of vehicle. Heck, Dark Seid and Thanos even share the honour of a little floating platform to ride about in. Marvel fans can start jumping for joy now at Hyperion, Captain Marvel, Mark 39 Iron Man (also called “Gemini” and “Starboost”) and a space-going version of Captain America getting the minifig treatment. The Mad Titan Thanos comes to us as a bigfig, and he actually looks impressively good.

76048 Iron Skull Sub Attack is a very similar concept… except under water. Mark 37 Iron Man (“Hammerhead”), scuba Captain America, Red Skull and a Hydra diver are the minfigs accompanying a rather bulky submersible towing a cage. The armour on the Iron Man seems to be a recolour of the piece used for the minifig-scale Hero factory figures.

I’m personally more than a little excited for some new Iron Man, what’s everyone else looking out for?

Move over Tumbler, Arkham Knight is here

When you have to get around town to beat up costumed criminals, it’s important to do so with style. And technique. And size. All of these can be found in the latest creation by Hansan Kabalak, who has painstakingly recreated in epic scale the unique vehicle from the latest Batman game, Batman: Arkham Knight.

Larger than Lego’s own USC Tumbler, this Batmobile features functionality and loads of complex angles. Hansan went all out: adding his own custom decals, colored parts, and even a few custom pieces to his creation to make it as faithful to the game as possible. Best of all, Hansan even took the time to design his Batmobile with its signature feature: attack mode.

Full size Bionicle Iron Man helmet

As we all know, “Iron Man” isn’t actually made of iron, but rather gold-titanium alloy. Robert Downey Jr wouldn’t lie to us, would he? At any rate, definitely not made out of iron or any alloys (but still as impressive) is this new creation by nobu_tary. We’re not sure if this helmet would actually fit on a person’s head, but taking a guess from the size of certain pieces, it does look up to the task.

This will pair nicely with other Iron Man creations we’ve featured in the past, like a gauntlet or the famous arc reactor. Everyone keep up the good work, we’ll soon have an entire suit.

Steam-age Mutant Ninja Turtles

Mashups are everywhere right now. So it’s strangely unsurprising (but still quite entertaining) to see the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fighting crime in the Victorian period. Karen Quinn has built a charming steam-powered Party Wagon. In addition to everyone’s favorite anthropomorphic turtles, this build includes Guru Splinter, Casey “Sheer Luck” Holmes, Dr. April O’Watson, and Jack the Shredder. Perhaps next time the heroes in a half shell will travel even further back in time, to say, oh I don’t know, the Renaissance?

Superman’s The Bottle City of Kandor

I am going to be honest, here: I didn’t ever read the comics, nor have I followed a terrible amount of the Superman movies. I can, however, appreciate a gorgeous LEGO creation even if I didn’t recognize the reference.

I’ll let the builder, Ken Robichaud, do the explaining:

Once the capital city of Krypton, it and its inhabitants were shrunk and preserved from the planets eventual destruction by the villainous Brainiac.

Kept safe in Superman’s Fortress of Solitude after its liberation from Brainiac’s ship, it became part of the Last Son of Krypton’s collection of unique and precious items and lifeforms from across the universe.
