LEGO Star Wars is one of the most popular LEGO themes of all time. Far beyond X-wings and TIE fighters, there’s a whole expanded universe of inspiration, and an army of LEGO fans ready to build whatever comes out of George Lucas’s head next.

Mid-scale LEGO U-wing & Blue Squadron X-wing from Rogue One

The UT-60D U-wing gunship revealed in Rogue One (out digitally today and on disc next Tuesday) has inspired numerous LEGO models, from the official 75155 U-wing Fighter set to fan-made creations like the UCS U-wing by Mirko Soppelsa. Adding to his fleet of smaller-scale LEGO Star Wars vehicles, Tim Goddard has built a fantastically detailed U-wing, accompanied by a pair of updated X-wings representing Blue Squadron and Red Squadron.

U-Wing

Like the short-lived 7778 Midi-Scale Millennium Falcon, this scale gives Tim enough pieces to achieve lots of interesting detail (I love the gray section and those blue stripes on the sides of the U-wing) without a huge investment in parts. Naturally, Tim has built fully functional swing-wings for his U-wing.

Invasion of the BB-8’s

Out with the Brickheadz and in with the BB-8’s? Apparently everything can be BB-8-ified, from other Star Wars characters, to DC or Marvel superheroes, and even the Sanrio franchise! I’m impressed by the way Handoko Setyawan has taken a simple spherical shape, and with clever interchange of colors and perhaps a distinguishing feature or two, transformed it into a range of familiar characters.

Two of my favourite spherical charms are those spikes of Darth Maul and Hello Kitty’s ribbon bow. Check out his Flickr album for a closer look at the rest of this ball-tastic invasion! And if you think you’re up to creating your own BB-8 inspired build, Handoko’s even provided an instruction guide to help you build one.

It’s not wise to upset a wookie

You can almost hear Chewie growling with frustration in Mike Sinclair‘s interpretation of the classic scene on Cloud City from The Empire Strikes Back. Lobot looks on suspiciously as the Ugnaughts taunt our favorite Wookie, throwing C-3P0’s head between themselves. I love the greebling used to create the junk, and the yellow plate with translucent red grills for the furnace looks perfect. A fantastic representation of an instantly recognizable Bespin scene.

Grow your own Star Wars planet (or forest moon, as the case may be)

For anybody who’s wanted to have one of the planets or moons in the Star Wars universe to decorate their home or garden — because, who doesn’t want a patch of Nar Shaddaa, am I right? — Kit Bricksto has solved the problem with an ingenious little build. Available to galactic residents everywhere from Corellia to Ryloth*, the Grow Your Own Planet line of celestial objects in garden pots brings you a little piece of a planet (or moon) far, far away. The Rebel trooper minifig with a dripping watering can is a lovely touch, as is the pair of life-size pruning scissors lying nearby, but my favorite detail is the waterfall flowing from the larger pot into the smaller pot.

* Product not available on Alderaan, Jedha, Scarif, or the Hosnian System. Not recommended for residents of Mustafar.

Minifigure scale Star Wars Imperial Shuttle Tydirium made from over 6000 LEGO bricks

Swiss builder Hannes Tscharner has crafted another Star Wars masterpiece, this time building his own UCS style model of the Imperial shuttle Tydirium from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. At 94cm wide and 102cm tall, the model stands larger than LEGO’s own 10212 Imperial Shuttle and contains more than twice as many pieces. It also features several play features including motorized folding wings, light-up engines, a full interior, and more.

BrickHeadz from a galaxy far far away...

We all knew this was going to happen sooner or later: the invasion of BrickHeadz has crossed over to a galaxy far far away. Jared Chan brings us four Star Wars characters; the twins Luke and Leia along with Han and C-3PO. I’m impressed with the builder’s use of a limited palette of gold bricks to pull off the shiny protocol droid.

Portrait of an Astromech Droid

From a distance, this may look like any other simple portrait layout of R2-D2, but upon closer inspection, you’ll notice that it uses an incredible array of parts from Technic beams to droids and even minifigures! Although we’ve seen this technique in the past, Alby Darul has executed it excellently with just a few pieces to capture the Artoo’s iconic lines, giving the mosaic a great sense of depth.
