Obi-Wan will get his revenge with this awesome LEGO UCS-scale Jedi Starfighter

LEGO’s ever-popular Ultimate Collector Series of Star Wars ships has one glaring gap: the prequel movies. Whether you grew up with the original trilogy or the new, you have to admit that there were plenty of amazing ship designs in the prequels, and LEGO has made only a few as UCS-style models. Martin Latta is fixing that with this incredible custom model of Obi-Wan’s Jedi Starfighter from Revenge of the Sith.

The ship’s combination of wedge-shaped wings and radiator flaps with the smoothly domed fuselage makes the ship a real challenge to translate into LEGO, but you wouldn’t know it from Martin’s model, as the parts fit together seamlessly. One particular detail I love is the grey triangular road sign that fills a gap on the back of the cockpit. Continue reading →

Nostalgic Tim Burton-era Batmobile

Batman fans have so much material to draw inspiration from these days, but when it comes to Batmobiles, a few sources stand out. The recent Christopher Nolan series introduced us to the military prototype “Tumbler” capable of short jumps. The 60’s two-seater convertible was the perfect ride for the dynamic duo. But for many fans, the finned, rocket-propelled beast from the Tim Burton films takes the lead. This model by Pat Lacroix does a fantastic job of capturing its iconic shape, including some great greebly details like stud-shooters along the side.

And speaking of rocket-propelled, here’s the view from the back, which also shows off the rear fins, made using a 1x3x2 arch.

The LEGO Movie 2 performs poorly in first weekend while also being top movie in theaters [Feature]

The opening weekend of a movie is typically an indicator of how successful it will ultimately be. And even though the The LEGO Movie 2 (TLM2) took the number one spot in the box office (read our review here), the financial performance looks troubling, possibly placing the development of future sequels at risk.

The first LEGO Movie netted $87.4 million worldwide during its opening weekend. TLM2’s opening weekend was comparatively disappointing, reaching just $52.5 million. Let’s take a closer look to compare the two.

Friends in the rain: LEGO BrickHeadz Totoro and Satsuki

It would take a hard heart not to be moved by Kendall Brown‘s adorable digital LEGO Totoro and Satsuki. As with his Elf and Narwhal and Wizard of Oz characters, which we recently featured, it’s a perfect example of how to build in the BrickHeadz theme. In this case it’s the selection of cartoon tile eyes, perfectly spaced, which captures Totoro’s quizzical expression and lifts the build to another level. Mix in all those extra touches like the flicks in Satsuki’s hair, Totoro’s tummy fur, and atmospheric Photoshop rain and you have a fitting tribute to one of the greatest animated films of all time.

The LEGO Movie 2’s sewer babies just got bigger

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part officially opens today (be sure to read our LEGO Movie 2 review), and to mark the occasion, “Big Daddy” Nelson has taken a few of the movie’s smallest characters and given them a huge makeover. Built in the style of the classic 3723 Creator Minifigure set, these giant sewer babies look just like their miniature counterparts from the TLM2 Accessory Set.

They have even more range than the toddler elements they’re based on, featuring double-sided heads and movable hands. They’re also more complex than you might think, with some clever mosaic work needed to translate the prints on the torsos and heads into bricks.

LEGO BrickHeadz from The LEGO Movie 2 revealed [News]

Today LEGO has revealed four BrickHeadz based on The LEGO Movie 2 in a roundabout way, thanks to uploading the instructions to LEGO.com. The four characters are the film’s main characters, 41634 Emmet, 41635 Wyldstyle, 41636 Benny, and 41637 Sweet Mayhem. They’re numbered BrickHeadz 88-91. While we don’t have the official release date or price yet, it’s a safe bet that they’ll fall into the standard $10-per-figure range. The LEGO Movie 2 Collectible Minifigures 71023 [Review]

With LEGO having just announced its 21st set for The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, it’s safe to say they’re betting big on the film franchise. And just like the first movie in the series, that means there’s also a tie-in wave of the infinitely popular Minifigures theme (commonly called Collectible Minifigures, or CMFs). 71023 LEGO Minifigures – The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part will be officially available beginning Feb. 1, though they’re already beginning to pop up in retail stores. They’ll be priced at US $3.99 | CAN $4.99. Remember to check out our Feel Guide if you’re on the hunt for these figures.

This series features the main movie crew of Emmet, Lucy, Benny, and Unikitty, along with newcomers like Rex and a newly happy President Business. There’s also a contingent of characters from Apocalypseburg and The Wizard of Oz, plus Lucy’s all-girl band is ready to rock with all four members in the series. Finally, a sprinkling of the ever-popular costume characters is present with a giraffe and crayon. Let’s take a look at these figures one by one.

The drinks are on us

When you think of Star Wars, the first things that come to mind are likely spaceships and laser swords. But cantinas occupy an only slightly less iconic place in the lore of that galaxy far, far away. One of those seedy, backwater bars is the Half-Pint Cantina, proprietor Hass Mavoc, brought to us in LEGO form by bcinman6. A character from the builder’s own imagination, Hass is a Sarian barkeep with some excellent shaping to achieve his alien features. Most notable are the red Hulk arms used behind the eyes and the space armor for the mouth.

The spectacular, marvellous and wonderful Incredibles

We’ve seen great builds of the Parr family before, but these Incredibles by Philippe Moisan take them to a whole new scale. Despite the somewhat minimalist styyle, they subtly yet splendidly capture the essence of each of the characters in their animated form. One can tell how each LEGO part was specially chosen for a particular reason. For instance, Mr. Incredible’s mask looks perfect made with only the 1×2 rounded plate with open studs. And you have to love the creative simplification of the insignia on his chest, which is simply an incredible work of art!

Mini-Ecto is here to deal with all of your mini-ghosts

In the era of tiny city apartments only the tiniest of ghosts can afford haunting residents of large cities. And since there are no creatures capable of destroying a whole block, why bother rolling out the mighty Ecto-1? Mini-Ecto-1 is on its way to take down a ghost in your tiny kitchen! Koala Yummies plays around with the 1967 Mini Cooper S from LEGO Speed Champions 75894 set and skilfully turns it into an adorable addition to the Ghostbustrs’ garage. I particularly love the use of curved slope with Ghostbusters logo pattern on the side of the Mini; it looks like the piece was designed solely for this lovely build!

A new order of LEGO TIE Fighter

Like us, Koen Zwanenburg was amazed by the LEGO TIE Fighter models created by fellow builder Jarek, but rather than just marveling, he thought he’d have a shot at building a world-class TIE Fighter himself. Judging by the results, it’s quite a success. While at first glance the build may seem to take a similar approach as Jarek’s, Koen has actually redone the model from the ground up. Naturally, the convergent evolution of the building process means that there are some similarities (and the fact that they’re both based on the same Star Wars ship), but it’s truly remarkable how different this model is while being just as accurate.

The ability to achieve clean lines with minimal studs visible on a ship this lean is an accomplishment not be underestimated. I can almost hear the TIE’s distinctive engine roar now…
