LEGO BOOST 17101 Creative Toolbox [Review]

The 17101 BOOST Creative Toolbox represents the latest initiative from LEGO to introduce children to the worlds of engineering, robotics, and computer programming. LEGO recently expanded their range of supported devices, so we’re finally able to bring you a review without purchasing a brand new iPad. LEGO has targeted the 7- to 12-year-old age range for the BOOST product, one of the youngest demographics for a LEGO robotics kit. Unlike the MINDSTORMS series of products that features Technic, BOOST liberally incorporates LEGO SYSTEM brick (in addition to Technic) as the mechanical parts of the robots.

For this review, I engaged the services of an appropriate expert: my 6-year-old daughter, Artemis. Overall, she had few difficulties building the Vernie model, although she occasionally lacked the hand strength to push the Technic pins in holes (particularly when seating multiple pins at once).

Who has two thumbs, builds robots, and won’t eat broccoli? This girl!

LEGO Technic 42077 Rally Car [Review]

Cars are the very essence of the LEGO Technic philosophy. Supercars, buggies, Formula 1 cars or wild futuristic concepts — there’s no car you can’t build with LEGO Technic pieces. And it’s not just about the design, but also about the models’ functionality; any car can be equipped with a gear box or all-wheel drive. This season 42077 Rally Car hits the store shelves — an amazingly well-balanced set that can serve both as a brilliant display model or as a very clever choice for anyone who’s just getting to know the world of Technic mechanisms. The set consists of 1005 pieces and retails for $109.99 / 99.99€ / £89.99.

OTHER NEWS: There were a few other LEGO news articles from varying places around the web this week. Here are the best of the rest:

  • Life-size LEGO safari on show in Mermaid Quay, Cardiff Bay, BBC News – The 12 models, which include a 2.5m high African elephant and a 3m long crocodile, have taken LEGO artists over 4,000 hours to build, and are made up of about 600,000 bricks.
  • LEGO for a child with a hole in his heart, New York Times – What does a LEGO set mean to a child, or to parents who can hardly afford it? This narrative tugs on the heartstrings.
  • Duplo Jeopardy: Sell or keep your LEGO collection?, Judge John Hodgman Podcast – Caleb brings the case against his friend, Ryan. Caleb is ready to get rid of his LEGO collection, but Ryan thinks he should keep it in storage. Ryan says that even though Caleb thinks he’s ready to let it go, he will later regret parting with these sets. Who’s right? Who’s wrong?
  • A LEGO zombie horde is the most fun of zombie hordes, Nerdist – YouTuber Nixolas decided to take the zombie genre and add a bit more whimsy to it. Instead of giving a bunch of human actors some undead makeup, they made a zombie horde out of LEGO figures.

Enter Kill Teal (Volume 2) contest to win 10260 Downtown Diner [News]

Our friends over at New Elementary are holding a contest in honour of the reintroduction of teal-coloured LEGO elements by LEGO.  There are some great prizes to be won, including two Grand Prize winners receiving a copy of 10260 Downtown Diner.  The competition is based on the ‘Mark Stafford Killed Teal’ story (if you do not know this story, it is explained on the competition page), and a previous build of mine that jokingly showed Mark Stafford killing Teal by sweeping it into a furnace.

Your entry should be a LEGO creation depicting the following: How might Mark Stafford kill teal again? The closing date is 22 February 2018, so there’s still time to get building and enter.  All the details, rules and entry form can be found over on New Elementary’s contest page.
