LEGO Technic 42096 Porsche 911 RSR is revealed [News]

A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one: 42096 Porsche 911 RSR will be the largest LEGO Technic set of the first half of 2019. First official pictures reveal a 1,580-piece-large replica of one of the most iconic racing vehicles of our days. The set seems to be loaded with various play features: a rear wing with ‘swan neck’ mounts, detailed cockpit, working differential, independent suspension and some more. Unfortunately, the model features no working gear box, but its brilliant design seems to make up for any missing mechanism.

LEGO Wind Turbine designer video: A Vestas for the rest of us [News]

The LEGO vault is opening again soon with the release of 10268 Creator Expert Vestas Wind Turbine on Black Friday. From the designer video included below, LEGO designer Carl Merriam shares some of the behind-the-scenes work that went into transforming the set from a limited exclusive released in 2008 to a product that will soon be available to everyone. Carl shows off some of the set’s stand out features (including the company’s new plant-based tree elements and a minifigure that looks surprisingly like himself) as well as the story of how he became a LEGO designer.

Check our review of the Vestas Wind Turbine for an even closer look. The set contains 826 pieces, three minifigures and a dog. It will sell for $199.99 US, $249.99 CAN, and £159.99 UK starting on Black Friday. Nov. 23.

Last few days to submit designs to Bricklink’s AFOL Designer Program [News]

There are only a few days left to submit entries to Bricklink’s AFOL Designer Program before the Nov. 18th deadline. Up to 20 finalists will be judged by current LEGO designers, and the winning designs will be crowdfunded, produced and sold by Bricklink.

The designs must be created in Bricklink’s Studio 2.0 software. The eventual release of the fan-designed sets is slated for April 2019, with 10 percent of the sales going to the designer. Early Black Friday sales include LEGO holiday exclusives and double VIP points, and Barnes and Noble Harry Potter minifig pack [News]

Black Friday LEGO deals and exclusives are starting a week early. The LEGO Store is offering their first exclusive holiday gift with purchase (literally a gift box!), double VIP points, and the lingering Harry Potter Diagon Ally set with orders more than $99 USD, available Nov. 17-18 only, while supplies last.

Barnes and Noble is also hosting a Harry Potter fan event and offering the elusive minifigure four-pack as a gift with purchase for all LEGO orders $75 and above only on Saturday, Nov. 17.

LEGO 10268 Vestas Wind Turbine is back as the newest Creator Expert set [Review]

Since its inception, the LEGO Creator Expert line has come to be recognized by its advanced building techniques and great value. However, as statistics teaches us, in every group there are bound to be outliers. Enter 10268 Vestas Wind Turbine, a set that sticks out from the crowd in every sense. A re-rerelease of set 4999 from 2008, which only saw limited release to Danish energy company Vestas’ employees, the new set has 826 pieces and is priced at $199.99. It will be available beginning on Black Friday (Nov. 23).

Brickmania 1031 F-4C Phantom Supersonic Jet Interceptor custom LEGO kit [Review]

We’ve featured custom LEGO kits by Brickmania many times over the years, but Dan Siskind‘s small business has grown considerably since the last time we reviewed one of the company’s kits. Most notably, Dan himself is no longer the sole or even primary designer — great LEGO builders like Cody Osell now contribute many of the custom designs to the company’s products. While Dan is best known for tanks, Cody has designed most of Brickmania’s airplane models, including the F-4C Phantom II we’ll be reviewing today.

LEGO auctions on Catawiki include a 100,000-brick Italian tower, vintage 1950’s LEGO, and rare Technic sets [News]

Catawiki is an auction website that focuses on rare and interesting items, and they’ve been featuring unique LEGO lots for several years. Unlike eBay, Catawiki’s lots are curated, with LEGO experts on staff who work with sellers to ensure the lots are interesting and have detailed information.

One of the most unique LEGO auctions I’ve seen in a while is happening this week, with a custom LEGO version of the Bell Tower of Florence built from over a hundred thousand bricks! Built by Luca Petraglia over the course of more than three years, the tower stands 3 meters (nearly 10 feet) tall.

Luca has displayed his tower at LEGO conventions such as the LEGO Fan Weekend in Skærbæk, Denmark. You can get a better sense of the tower’s massive scale with the builder standing next to it.

Catawiki also has a number of other interesting LEGO-related auctions this week, including some 1950’s vintage LEGO.

Changes coming to Flickr following acquisition by SmugMug – here’s how it affects LEGO builders [News and Editorial]

Change is inevitable within any community, and the online LEGO fan community has certainly weathered its share of major disruptions over the past 20 years.

Ever since the future of LEGO photo sharing website Brickshelf.com became unclear in July 2007, the majority of the LEGO building community has made its home on Flickr. But with Yahoo! failing to keep up with the times, the venerable web company has begun shedding its online properties, leading to the acquisition of Flickr by SmugMug earlier this year. Unlike the hysteria back in 2007, the reaction to the SmugMug acquisition among LEGO builders has been fairly muted, and generally positive given the sense that Yahoo! had effectively abandoned Flickr several years ago. This changed recently when SmugMug announced changes it would be making to Flickr’s Pro and free accounts at the beginning of 2019.

LEGO Harry Potter Diagon Alley gift with purchase now available [News]

LEGO Harry Potter has a new microscale set out today. 40289 Diagon Alley is now available as a gift with purchase from LEGO with orders more than $99 USD until Nov. 21 (or until supplies run out). The sizeable set (read our review here) includes 374 pieces (with a few cobblestone prints) and one minifigure of wand-maker Ollivander.

In addition, LEGO VIPs can get double points on two specific sets this month. The first is 71043 Hogwarts Castle, a perfect accompaniment to this month’s gift with purchase. Our review goes into detail about this massive magical set.

The second is this year’s seasonal 10263 Winter Village Fire Station just in time for the holidays. Again, check out our review to see all the fun details in this festive set.

Last day for LEGO Forma pre-orders on Indiegogo [News]

Today is the last day to support LEGO Forma, the new experimental product line featuring kinetic sculptures of fish. The only remaining set available for pre-order on Indiegogo (at the time of publishing) is the UK-only base pack featuring a koi fish. The sets should ship at the beginning of next year.

LEGO Forma was announced as a limited short-batch pilot program designed to target LEGO early adopters and determine if there is a market for unique products that don’t lend themselves to other product lines. While it appears the LEGO Forma launch was successful with many perks selling out, the initial amounts of available perks appear to have been reduced in order to show them being “sold out” by the end of the crowdfunding period. It remains to be seen if LEGO considers the effort a success or if the Forma product line will see a general release.
