About Clinton

I'm all the way down in a little country called South Africa. There's no lions roaming the streets, unfortunately, but there is everyone's favourite plastic brick.   I don't have a lot of my own work online (yet), but I've been following The Brother Brick for around eight years, so it's bizarre that I'm going to be writing for it.   My day job is journalism covering the maker movement for htxt.africa. And yes, I do occasionally sneak stories of Lego onto the site.   Follow my ramblings, LEGO and otherwise: Twitter: @Clint_Matos | Instagram: @clinton_matos

Three of our favourite things: LEGO Steampunk dragon

We’re sure the LEGO steampunk fans among our readers were happy when they saw the newest Ninjago subtheme in the form of Skybound. Ninjas versus sky pirates with a steampunk, setting as the ninja’s dragons mount an assualt against the pirate’s flying fortress? Hell. Yes.

Using pieces from 70603 Raid Zeppelin and 70605 Misfortune’s Keep, LEGO 7 gave the pirates a dragon of their own, and it’s an amalgamation of majesty and aggression

One svelte LEGO Gundam

While Gundam mechs (LEGO or otherwise) aren’t exactly known for their bulkyness, this creation by
Andrea Chiapella is exquisitely thin while still looking powerful. This particular build is based on the Gundam GN001 Exia which has some decidedly complex angles to pull off. I think you’ll agree that justice was more than done here.

I hope we get a view of the back, as the Exia has an equally complex look there.

A pair of hardcore hot rods

If you love cars, you can’t go wrong with taking a stroll through Calin‘s photostream. Doing so will lead you to models such as these two below — a low-riding VW Beetle with superb engine detailing called “Salty Bug”…

Salty Bug

And something that looks more like a Hot Wheels (but it’s LEGO, so it’s much better)…

The Purple People Eater

Seeing these really makes me happy that you can get yourself a similar build in an official set. 75875 Ford F-150 Raptor & Ford Model A Hot Rod comes with a modified Ford Model A (say that 10 times fast) that not only looks the part, but has printed door pieces ablaze with flames. I imagine this set is going to be very desirable for that alone.

LEGO District 9 Exosuit

I may be a bigger fan of District 9 when compared to most people. It’s partly because it’s set in my home country of South Africa, but mostly because it has one of the coolest mech scenes ever created.

The Exosuit / mech prawn / bio-suit is done great justice by Jonas and uses some clever tricks to get all the details in this relatively small build. My personal favourite is the heavy use of the minifig pirate hook hands for multiple elements.

LEGO Deadpool, bricks without a mouth

With Deadpool finally being released either today or tomorrow (depending on where you live and when you read this), the world looks like it’s finally getting the Deadpool movie we’ve all wanted. To coincide with this, Jonas has recreated the, erm, lower half of the merc with a mouth. And if you need more Deadpool before watching Deadpool, may I present to you Deadpool as reviewed by Deadpool. Deadpool.

LEGO coat of arms of Austria

Let uncle Clinton tell you a story: In fourth grade my school put on a play focused around traveling the world, and my input was drawing and painting the flags and insignia of the various countries. Do you know how difficult it is to create an accurate, full size Indian flag with fourth grade art supplies and no artistic talent?

Anyway, I now have a deep appreciation for symbols like that, and it’s why I appreciate this build from “kofi” even more. From Vorarlberg to Burgenland, the builder has created the coat of arms for each of the nine states in the federation of Austria. Zoom right in on this one and appreciate all the detailing pulled off at this small scale.

A quartet of LEGO F1 cars

LEGO has been creating official versions of F1 cars for years now, but none of them have even come close to the elegance of these four from builder Noah_L.

Formula 1 Collection | 2/1/16

From left to right you’ll find: Maserati 250F Tipo 2, McLaren MP4/6, Ferrari F2007 and finally a Ferrari SF15-T. If you need any more F1 beauty, Noah_L is in the process of building “at least one F1 car from each decade since the first F1 season (1950)”. I can’t wait.

A real slick robot

We blog a lot of LEGO mecha here on The Brothers Brick, and I always love seeing new stuff done with in the genre. This lanky mech from Nils M pulls off some fantastic shaping with relatively simple techniques and pieces.

ExoForce Mecha

If you’re wondering why the builder called this an “ExoForce Mecha”, it’s because it uses a few pieces (with their original stickers) from 7706 Mobile Defense Tank — one of the few Exo-Force sets that has continued to elude me…

LEGO, transform and roll out!

Let’s just have a quick consensus: Transformers is one of the coolest things ever. Robots that turn into tanks, dinosaurs and sundry? That’s just too good. With that in mind, I happened to come across not one, but two transforming builds from two separate builders.

Up first is “PACE” from JAN LEGO that looks great in both forms as well as using anything but wheels for its wheels.

PACE

For more nostalgia, Andrew Lee’s “Shellax!” is equal parts van and turtle. Oh, and it’s Donatello, because he’s the best Ninja Turtle. Again, there’s a consensus on this.

Lord Garmadon made gargantuan

Man, LEGO 7 is fast becoming one of my favourite builders. I recently featured the “Cattle Devil” (a Minotaur by any other name) and now we have this. There’s no description to go along with it, but it is named Lord Garmadon, which is most definitely the character from the Ninjago theme only turned up to, well 10 or 11 isn’t high enough. ^10 maybe?

Lord Garmadon-7

This is really one of those builds where I suggest you just go through the builder’s photostream to see the rest of the pictures instead of reading this. It’s worth every click, I promise you.

Koenigseggisseggggnignigsegigisegggnigseggniggsegg

legolover22 brings us another fantastic car build, and this time it’s the Swedish supercar, the Koenigsegg. Looking at an actual car, I’m very surprised this build was pulled off so well at this scale. If you’re a petrol head, you’ll immediately recognize this one.

Looks good from the back too.

A post-apocalyptic mech with hints of Cherno Alpha

The focus here today is “Unit 573 Model No. 9” from chubbybots, which is delightfully stocky while still looking like a serious warmachine.

zvrf08

The builder says it is inspired by the Zombie Vs Robot Adventure comic book, and carries no weapons because it “pulverizes its enemies to death.” I mean, as far as battle strategies go, that’s a pretty good one.

As the title betrays, the main semi-circular pieces which form the core of the build remind me of the Cherno Alpha Jaeger from Pacific Rim, and little details like the holes in those pieces and the splashes of color really add a lot of character to this build. Listen, I’m not saying Pacific Rim is one of the most fun movies ever made because it has giant robots slapping around giant-er monsters with shipping containers because the world’s politicians apparently watched way too much anime—wait, that’s exactly what I’m saying.

Now I really want a worthy Kaiju to fight this mech.
