Even if you’re not an Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo gamer yourself, and even if you’ve never played one of the many LEGO games, it’s hard not to appreciate the strange and stunning LEGO creations inspired by video games. Look for lots of LEGO models inspired by Halo, the Legend of Zelda, Gears of War, Pokemon, Final Fantasy, and more. Game on!

Convene the Covenant and start the Great Journey

A bunch of spaceships and speeders, driven by aliens, and all decked out in purple? This can only be a LEGO rendition of the erstwhile villains of the Halo series, crafted by the aptly-named Heretic Creations. The range of parts available in purple is not as limited as it once was, but the curves of the Covenant craft can still be very tricky to replicate. They’re admirably done here, though – especially the Phantom (that’s the big dropship on the left). Just as impressive is the way the aliens themselves are made. The feathers on the Hunters’ back are great, as are the helmets for the Engineer’s shell. But it’s the High Prophets of Mercy, Truth and Regret that really draw the eye with their gold headdresses!

As of late, LEGO has been providing all kinds of helmets and busts on pedestals for their various IP partnerships. This pattern worms its way into the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise with LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog 77000 Shadow the Hedgehog, set to hit store shelves on October 1st. With 720 pieces, the set is available now for pre-order from LEGO.com for US $69.99 | CAN $89.99 | UK £59.99. It may also be available from 3rd party resellers on Amazon and eBay. But how will this bust hold up to the other plinthed creations from Star Wars and Marvel? Read on to find out!

Stay determined with this quartet of Undertale characters

Nine years ago this week, Undertale was released, going from a scrappy Kickstarter-funded passion project to one of the most beloved indie games of all time. The RPG “where no one has to get hurt” challenged what it means to be a game hero and won hearts with its humor, soundtrack, and memorable characters. Builder and LEGO photographer GlimpseGlow brings four key characters to life in brick form, capturing their pixel charm in miniature. First up is Asriel Dreemurr. And look! He brought flowers. How lovely.

A criminally good LEGO tribute to Star Wars Outlaws

Fresh off her debut in the video game Star Wars Outlaws, Kay Vess and her commando droid associate ND-5 go LEGO courtesy of fan builder Fabian B. Building small poses big challenges, yet Fabian smuggles in a galaxy of adventure with just a few dozen parts. The “figbash” characters are spot on, but Kay’s speeder bike shines with clever techniques, especially those tiny handlebars made from box wrenches, hammers, and skeleton arms.

Wipeout racer in LEGO is a block rockin’ beast

With its sleek anti-gravity racers, pounding EDM soundtrack, and unmatched sense of speed, the Wipeout series remains one of the UK’s most beloved video game exports. Sebastian Arts brings the adrenaline rush to LEGO with his eminently cool Feisar FX250-300 racing ship. Everything about the presentation is ace, from the stellar color blocking to the custom stickers to the smaller- scale racers on the stand to the slick graphic design that frames the models.

Bedtime for Bowser Jr.

They may be selfish, mean, and bad to the drybones, but somehow King Koopa and his kids still come off as charming and loveable. They’re like a family of Charlie Browns, always missing that football. It’s that sympathetic side that TBB regular Dicken Liu brings out with his LEGO tribute to Bowser Jr. The Koopaling looks so vulnerable outside of his shell, ready to tuck into bed. Hopefully papa will sing him a few bars of Peaches as a lullaby.

This little scene is packed with some delightful parts and techniques. Dicken models Jr.’s shell on the massive Mighty Bowser set. The Nexo Knights lampshade comes from the Beastmaster’s Chariot. The Koopaling’s eyes were exclusive to the Powerpuff Girls Team Pack for LEGO Dimensions, and I’m pretty sure that Bowser Jr. is keeping his little tuft of hair dry with an inside-out Scala sleeping bag. The results are utterly adorable. Please, Mario, go easy on the little guy!

Pokédex entry #104: Cubone – the lonely Pokémon

In the world of Pokémon, there are few stories as sad as that of Cubone. And LEGO builder Redverse has poured all that lonely energy into a beautiful build of this pocket monster. Sporting a helm of bone, and a club of the same, Cubone is ready to unleash its infamous Bone Club attack. The Magnemite of Route 10 had better watch out!

Magenta Haunter is the belle of the Shadow Ball

A wildly good Haunter appears courtesy of LEGO Pokémon master Zane Houston. Just thinking about making a huge ball in LEGO using just an uncommon color like magenta would make a Sobble (#816) cry, but Zane makes it work with a deft jigsawing of wedge plates. Haunter’s floating hands grasp its special Shadow Ball attack. Creating this erratic form must have made for a bumpy ride, especially considering every non-white surface is covered in studs. The erratic shaping of the energy ripples framed by purples is brilliant and hearkens back to Zane’s electrifying Pikachu model from last year. During the build process, Zane experimented with brick-built eyes, but his solution of using T pieces for the tiny pupils perfectly captures Haunter’s ghostly gaze.

Take a Minecraft Warped Forest tour in LEGO for alternative rocks

In the Minecraft gaming world, player mods push the game’s visuals to new heights. In the LEGO community, builders like Michał Kozłowski (Edge of Bricks) similarly add AFOL innovation to the Minecraft theme and the results are truly next-gen. Michał’s ornate take on this Nether biome is night-and-day different from the official LEGO interpretation. Tooth plates make for excellent weeping vines on the fungal “trees.” Most impressive is Michał’s pixelated lava, which mixes solid and transparent orange elements and looks amazing when lit up with a third-party lighting kit.

Yesterday, Part 1 of our TBB review of LEGO The Legend of Zelda 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 covered the Breath of the Wild version of this arboreal guardian. But now we need to run through a couple measures of the notes A, D, and F to play the Song of Time on our ocarina and roll the review back to the beginning again. And while it’s not releasing within that theme, there’s certainly much excitement for the first LEGO entry into this Nintendo property. Offering two different builds, referencing either Breath of the Wild or Ocarina of Time, LEGO The Legend of Zelda 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 comes in at 2,500 pieces with release on September 1st. Start your plasma engines, the LEGO F-Zero GP is about to begin!

While these days Nintendo’s F-Zero might be best known as providing a stage and combatant in Smash Bros, the franchise was once among the crown jewels of Nintendo platforms. Each game pushed the hardware limits of its generation to create a thrilling sense of speed, and the colorful hovercrafts and their alien racers added a layer of story and lore never before seen in a racing game. Nintendo super-fan Clément pays tribute to the intergalactic grand prix with a LEGO starting gate and three racers: the Wild Goose, Golden Fox, and Sonic Phantom. Clément nails the chunky aesthetics of the N64 era, when the franchise went 3D, witch each vehicle’s colors and silhouette instantly recognizable.

If Clément’s take on Nintendo’s space racers has you feeling the need for speed, consider revisiting the Brothers Brick speeder circuit for other zippy hover vehicles.
