LEGO Ideas 21316 The Flintstones [Review]

Last year, LEGO Ideas celebrated 10 years since the first fan idea became an official retail set. Who could have imagined the number of universes, places, and characters turned into official products since then? And now, one more idea joins the club — LEGO Ideas 21316 The Flintstones, a fan project by Andrew Clark, who is known among LEGO enthusiasts as the fan designer of another LEGO Ideas set, 21304 Doctor Who. With 748 pieces, the Flintstones set is much bigger than Andrew’s previous project. It will be available to LEGO VIPs starting on Wednesday, February 20th for US $59.99 | UK £54.99 | CA $79.99.

The only good cat is a stir-fried cat

ALF, short for Alien Life Form, was a sitcom that ran in the ‘80s for almost 100 episodes. ALF comes from the planet Melmac, and throughout the series, he longs for the taste of savoring the family cat as a meal, since cats are the equivalents of our cattle in his home planet. The instantly recognizable ALF is covered with brown fur and has a rippled snout, which means being built with LEGO bricks is not an easy feat to pull off, but it’s executed nicely by Marcel V for this scene. The core and atmosphere from the series are captured quite nicely with the familiar pastel-themed walls and TV stage prop windows with horizontal shutters in the foreground and part of a refrigerator at the back.

The perfect LEGO Friends kitchen

I think there’s a little knowing joke going on in Aukbricks digital-LEGO recreation of Monica’s kitchen from classic 90s sitcom Friends. Although it’s a rendered build, the model sticks to available bricks, many of which rely on the colour palette found in the LEGO Friends themed sets. It’s a choice that absolutely works, and captures the idiosyncratic, homely yet prissy look of the room. It also means that if you had the requisite 6,000 pieces needed, you could absolutely build this model yourself. So, if you are a super-fan like Aukbricks, who claims to have watched the shows entire run 15 times, you too could pour over all the familiar details of this wonderfully accurate set in the comfort of your own home.

5-4-3-2-1 Thunderbirds are go!

Complementing his Thunderbird 3 creation from March, this 35,000-brick, 3-month-long build by Monstrophonic is spectacular. Getting the feel of Gerry Anderson’s very specific 1960s near future right in LEGO is tricky, but managed here by matching tile and dish repeats with knowing details like the red pipes and door trims. Zoom in and the details keep coming, from those lovely rails for Thunderbird 1’s launch pad, to the backlit control room. The custom minifigures of the Tracy boys are FAB too.

The great escape of Eleven and the gang

If there’s one scene that stands out from Stranger Things, this has got to be it. In a plot twist where one would have thought that the bicycles would take flight, instead we had a lovely surprise. With this, the Duffer Brothers wrote the 80s Chevy Van right into movie-making history books by making it fly in this epic escape scene. I’ve got to hand it to Andrea Lattanzio in showing that a great scene can be brought to life with the simplest builds, just with LEGO parts on hand.

A BrickHead who Fell to Earth

Last Sunday, the most famous British science-fiction TV-show Doctor Who has opened its 11th season, featuring dazzling Jodie Whittaker, the first woman ever to play the role of the Doctor. There are so many reasons to immediately fall for Whittaker’s version of the character, including her thick accent, her acting filled with child-like wonder, and, of course, her instantly iconic look.

| Nouvilas ⟩ loses no time and designs a lovely BrickHeadz version of the character. The coat made with thin tiles looks really great while the stripped pattern on the shirt is spot on as well.

K.I.T.T. – the talking, crime-fighting, Hasselhoff-tolerating car

It took almost three decades, but I’d equate the evolution of a talking assistants like K.I.T.T (short for Knight Industries Two Thousand, from the 1980’s TV show Knight Rider) to what we have today with Apple’s Siri, Microsoft’s Cortana, and other voice-activated systems, although these modern systems are still much less capable than K.I.T.T in many ways. This version of K.I.T.T by thewdarren is quite spectacular not only in size, but in all the details built with the LEGO Technic system.

Stranger Things served with LEGO and Eggo

Stranger Things has been one of my favourite TV series on the screen recently with its throwbacks and references to the 80’s. What makes it really stand out are the cast of characters that bring something unique and quirky to the table. This BrickHeadz lineup by Casey McCoy really brings back great memories and anticipation for the next season to come. In the lineup from left to right, we’ve got Mike, Eleven, Maxine, Lucas, Will and my favourite character, Dustin.

The star of the show, Eleven is seen holding on to her favourite snack, Eggo. It’s interesting to know that the Waffle element has only appeared once in the infamous LEGO 70818 Double Decker Couch set from The LEGO Movie theme. All this talk about Eggo is making me hungry – time for me to hunt for some!

Netflix releases LEGO episode of The Toys That Made Us. Is it worth watching? [Review]

For Netflix-viewing LEGO fans, the LEGO episode of the The Toys That Made Us has finally made its debut. For those unfamiliar with The Toys That Made Us, it is an eight-part documentary series that delves into the histories of various toy lines including Barbie dolls and Star Wars action figures. Being an avid LEGO history buff, I have been eagerly anticipating the LEGO episode ever since the premiere of season one this past December, so I made sure to watch the episode as soon as it was available. Take up launch positions. Thunderbirds are go!

The form of puppetry used to create Thunderbirds back in 1964 is unique and memorable even by today’s standards, let alone pulling it off with technology back then. This LEGO replica of the launchpad on Tracy Island is detailed and shows what a huge fan monstrophonic must be. Thunderbird 3, as depicted in this scene, is the single-stage-to-orbit spacecraft and one of five vehicles piloted by the Thunderbird brothers.

I kinda think its cute that the sofa from their home is the very same one that gets loaded into the spacecraft. I guess you’ll never miss home in space when you have your favourite couch to keep you company!

Futurama ship is a LEGO colour conundrum

The U.S.S. Planet Express Ship is the delivery vehicle for Planet Express Delivery Service in the animated TV series Futurama. In keeping with the creator’s other animated characters, the space ship has a distinctive ‘Matt Groening overbite’. Aido K has managed to make an instantly recognisable LEGO version of the ship using a mix of System and Duplo parts. The key part that captures the shape of the ship is the large Duplo airplane fuselage, and the builder has managed to add in all the other features using LEGO bricks to make this fantastic creation.

If you know your Duplo parts, then you may be confused about the build above – the upper fuselage part is only available in red. Aido explains the magical appearance of his ship – the build is actually red with a blue stripe and and blue lights and he altered the colour hues in the photograph to achieve a green and red ship! Thanks to Aido for sending the original image as it is a beautiful build in red, let alone after some photo-manipulation to re-colour in green.

Case Closed: The investigation on Mulder and Scully and their LEGO minifigures [Feature]

This iconic photo of two top-billing Hollywood stars holding their minifigs has been making the rounds in the LEGO-sphere, re-shared and re-surfacing regularly over the past couple of years. Our curiosity got the better of us… Was it a conspiracy from the LEGO Group? Was it a tease of an upcoming X-Files theme? So much mystery from this single photo. So many questions. We know the TRUTH IS OUT THERE, so we decided to do some digging.
