Street poets abound on Westminster Row

I’m new to the LEGO street scenes of L.G. Orlando (lgorlando), and boy have I been missing out!

The detail at the top of each is stunning. Though both buildings are distinct from each other in color and design, the tan in the red and green building ties in nicely with the other.

Here’s another group of L.G.’s LEGO city buildings. The yellow one is especially beautiful, and might be at home on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

Okay, it seems a little crass to hype the Zombie Apocafest alongside these beauties, but these are all Cafe Corner standard buildings, and exactly the type of structures we’re looking for in the group display.

LEGO trains at NMRA 2009 – this weekend

As part of the National Train Show on July 10-12, 2009 in Hartford, CT, Jamie Berard, set designer of the newly released ‘Emerald Night’ and employee of The LEGO Group (TLG), will participate as part of the show. Jamie will be giving a talk on both July 10 and 11 (Fri. and Sat.) about the design process and thinking that led up to the final ‘Emerald Night’ set, and about the Power functions components that support it. Fans are encouraged to participate to offer their views on the new platform. Jamie will also be available during the show for any questions you may have about his other excellent creations – Fast Flyer, Cafe Corner, Cool Convertible, Green Grocer, and newly announced Grand Carousel.

Also as part of this year’s show, Steve Witt, LEGO Community Relations Coordinator for North America, has graciously offered to host the traditional ILTCO pizza party at LEGO corporate headquarters in Enfield, CT after the show on Sat. July 11. Along with pizza and hanging out with Steve, Jamie and some of the LEGO Master Builders from Enfield, other events such as tours of the model shop and parts of the campus will occur. All AFOL train show participants are invited to attend.

Posting a heads-up for those on the East Coast of North America. If the pictures of past NMRA shows are anything to go by this promises to be a very impressive display of LEGO.

After the Empire falls...

Speaking of color, we’ve come to expect a certain chromatic consistency from Rong Yiren. Though his animal-shaped mecha are certainly gorgeous, it’s always nice to see a builder branch out.

In this scene depicting stormtroopers off to work after the end of the Evil Empire, I particularly like R2-D2 wearing a tie.

Plotting kitty

Johan van den Heuvel (Teddy) built this diorama that incorporates several building techniques to give the impression of a wood-paneled study. Mr. Whiskers, the cat, is plotting to take over the world. Mine just nap.

My favorite element is probably the coffeemaker, though the bookshelves are a close second.

7747 Wind Turbine Transport isn’t the Vestas Windmill, but it’ll do [News]

The rumored, non-exclusive LEGO windmill set appears to be on the horizon, in the form of 7747 Wind Turbine Transport.

The set isn’t available in the US yet (we got the tip from reader Matthew in the UK), so here’s a direct link in case the ones above don’t work:

And for those of you wondering what the heck a “Vestas Windmill” is, 4999 Vestas Windmill was a special limited-edition set created exclusively for employees of the Danish wind turbine company Vestas. As cool as it was, it was never made available to the general public, which caused quite a ruckus in the LEGO fan community.

Though substantially smaller than 4999, Perhaps 7747 Wind Turbine Transport represents The LEGO Group listening to that hue and cry…

As great as they are, brownstones and storefronts are fairly common LEGO structures built to the “Cafe Corner standard.” That makes this great train station by Johan van den Heuvel (Teddy) that much cooler.

I love the columns and the arches of the recessed entryway. The size itself is a first, as far as I can recall — not only double-wide but double-deep.

Summer 2009 LEGO sets out now: Star Wars, Indy, Grand Carousel, etc. [News]

LEGO Space Police, Agents 2.0 and other third-quarter/summer 2009 LEGO sets have been out for a month or so, but the rest of the new sets are now available from the LEGO Shop online.

First up, 10196 Grand Carousel incorporates Power Functions and plays music. The set is also the first to feature tan beards.

New LEGO Star Wars sets feature vehicles from the Clone Wars, including 8037 Anakin’s Y-Wing Starfighter and the Venator playset.

Other new LEGO Star Wars sets include:

7748 Corporate Alliance Tank Droid with a pair of Clone Troopers wearing jet packs.
8036 Separatist Shuttle with Nute Gunray and Onaconda Farr (Greedo!) minifigs.

The newest magnet sets make buying rare LEGO Star Wars minifigs affordable, including the LEGO® Star Wars™ 10th Anniversary Stormtrooper™ Magnet for $10. I call him “Chromy”.

The latest LEGO Indiana Jones sets take us back to the classic trilogy.

Finally, trolls and dwarves from the current LEGO Castle theme get their own Battle Packs.

Once again Ralph Savelsberg and I seem to be on the same wavelength.

Ralph made an ambulance and semi-trailer.

And I made an ambulance and trailer (the actual truck was made a while back).

And I promise it was totally coincidental.

I’m of one mind about Two Michael’s furniture

They’re great. I noticed Michael Lasky-Saparito’s (Two Michael’s) furniture and modular houses while I was first cruising for possible TBB posts about a month ago. When he recently emerged from his annual hibernation, I thought it would be timely to features this great furniture set.

The rest of his photostream showcases great buildings that use a lot of colors that I find vibrant and interesting, but don’t see often enough. Worth checking out.

Crime and Punishment

Seems appropriate to feature these two creations in the same post, since they capture very different sides of the same coin, but I found them within 24 hours of each other.

The first is a great detail-rich street scene by SlyOwl capturing a scene inspired by the film “Die Welle.” It’s apparently based on the American book “The Third Wave” by Ron Jones, and after-school special “The Wave” about a teacher trying to illustrate to his students how autocracy can take root anywhere and doing a bit too good a job of it. Definitely worth checking out the other angles and detailed deeplinks that SlyOwl has included.

This second creation, by Igor Makarov (Zeek), called Precinct 56 is a great take on the traditional LEGO police station sets, which have always struck me as too small. This is more fitting of a big city police headquarters and sure looks lite it’ll fit more than one cubicle, parking space and holding cell.

Sydney Opera House in miniature

Stefan has recreated the iconic Sydney Opera House with a quite ingenious use of parts. Well done!
