The kids aren’t alright

Stranger Things is a show where, thanks to absentee parenting, children spend more quality time with horrific Demogorgons than their own parents. (That’s the 80s for you!) As a result, the kids often have to take matters into their own hands. Case in point; that one time Eleven had to flip a van with her magical nosebleed powers. See, their parents are so absent, she doesn’t even have a normal name like Jessica or Brittany. Still, that doesn’t stop her from being an absolute badass and the kind of kid I would have totally hung out with in my youth. Builder Hachiroku24 replicated this scene nicely with a brick-built bicycle and a neat effect that makes the van seem as if it were levitating.

Eleven flips over the van, from Stranger Things

Speaking from experience, brick-built text on a smallish surface can be a tricky endeavor but this builder did a great job with the fictional town name blazoned across the side of the van. This creation is enough to turn anyone’s frown upside-down. See what I did there? If that didn’t make you smile, maybe our review of set 75810 The Upside Down will!

A new month means new LEGO sets on sale, with June seeing the launch of the recently announced 10266 NASA Apollo 11 Lunar Lander and general availability of 75810 Stranger Things The Upside Down. LEGO is also offering this awesome Space Patch reminiscent of those from NASA with purchases of the Lunar Lander from June 1-9 while supplies last. If the previous reaction to the LEGO Mustang Keychain promotion gives us any idea, this patch will be quite popular as well.

For our international readers, many of the newly announced summer wave of sets including Architecture, Friends, Harry Potter and City Space sets are available now as well. (U.S. availability for summer LEGO waves will begin in late June/early August.) Also the LEGO Ideas 40335 Space Rocket Ride promotion we reviewed earlier this week will begin in a few days on June 5th, so if you want to double up on promos you will have to wait a few days.

LEGO goes retro with designer video for Stranger Things [News]

LEGO has been having some fun with their designer videos recently, and this gem for the newly announced LEGO Stranger Things set 75810 The Upside Down turns the boombox’s awesome level up a notch. LEGO Designer Justin Ramsden (also part of the team of designers who bought us the gigantic Hogwarts Castle) flips the set over and over showcasing the strength of the build, while also rocking some amazing puns in this video designed to look like a long-lost interview recorded on VHS in the 1980s.

Hands-on with LEGO’s new 2,300-piece Stranger Things set, 75810 The Upside Down [Review]

Netflix’s sci-fi-horror-adventure series Stranger Things has been riding the wave of 80s childhood nostalgia for two seasons, making it a smash hit for the streaming platform. With the third season dropping July 4, LEGO is rolling out a massive new set to kick off its licensing partnership. Just officially announced today, 75810 The Upside Down includes one of the key locations in the series, the Byers’ home. It’s got a twist, though, with the creepy “Upside-Down” alternate dimension mirrored below it. Trees serve as pillars so the house can be displayed with either world on top. The set features 2,287 pieces and will retail for US $199.99 | CAN $269.99 | UK £179.99. It is on sale beginning tomorrow for LEGO VIP members, with a full release coming June 1.

The set includes eight minifigures, the mirrored house, Chief Hopper’s Blazer, and a small display stand for some of the minifigures. The scenes in the set span seasons 1 and 2, so there may be a few very mild spoilers. Let’s dig in and see how LEGO accomplished an upside-down house in the first-ever Stranger Things set.

This LEGO version of Chief Hopper’s cabin from Stranger Things looks perfect

Netflix’s hit show Stranger Things may be an unlikely candidate for a LEGO model, but builder Andrea Lattanzio is making it look amazing. This secluded cabin is the perfect safehouse for Eleven, and the shack’s dilapidated homeliness comes shining through in this recreation, which features perfect architectural details like uneven shingles and board siding (in some places made of sideways masonry bricks).

Stranger Things | Sheriff Hopper's Cabin + Chevrolet Blazer

Of course, it wouldn’t truly be complete without Chief Hopper and his 1980 Chevrolet Blazer. Andrea is a master of realistic LEGO vehicles, and the classic truck’s boxy style works perfectly in LEGO, and tan and dark tan give an authentic paint job for the small-town police department.

Stranger Things | Sheriff Hopper's Cabin + Chevrolet Blazer

Unlikely though it may be, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen Stranger Things LEGO creations. We’ve previously featured the various heroes in three different scales: minifigures, BrickHeadz, and miniland-scale characters.

The great escape of Eleven and the gang

If there’s one scene that stands out from Stranger Things, this has got to be it. In a plot twist where one would have thought that the bicycles would take flight, instead we had a lovely surprise. With this, the Duffer Brothers wrote the 80s Chevy Van right into movie-making history books by making it fly in this epic escape scene. I’ve got to hand it to Andrea Lattanzio in showing that a great scene can be brought to life with the simplest builds, just with LEGO parts on hand.

Stranger Things teen line-up

The Netflix original series Stanger Things was an instant cult classic, and has led to a number of LEGO creations inspired by some of its memorable cast of characters, including a tribute to Barb by our own Iain Heath. This latest creation by Casey McCoy features the older teens from the show and they are instantly recognizable versions of their on-screen inspirations.

Stranger Things Miniland Plus Teenagers

While fairly simple in construction, the models feature some nice techniques in the shaping of clothing and hair. I thought the purposeful miss-alignment of 1×1 bricks to create textured fabric for the pants was very effective.

Stranger Things served with LEGO and Eggo

Stranger Things has been one of my favourite TV series on the screen recently with its throwbacks and references to the 80’s. What makes it really stand out are the cast of characters that bring something unique and quirky to the table. This BrickHeadz lineup by Casey McCoy really brings back great memories and anticipation for the next season to come. In the lineup from left to right, we’ve got Mike, Eleven, Maxine, Lucas, Will and my favourite character, Dustin.

Stranger Things Brickheadz

The star of the show, Eleven is seen holding on to her favourite snack, Eggo. It’s interesting to know that the Waffle element has only appeared once in the infamous LEGO 70818 Double Decker Couch set from The LEGO Movie theme. All this talk about Eggo is making me hungry – time for me to hunt for some!

Justice for Barb is served

Little did we know that Barb from the cult following series from Netflix, Stranger Things was ever going to be a star of her own. While the Duffer brothers all thought they could get away with it – the internets would not let her die without a cause or fight. Our very own Iain Heath has beautifully captured her likeness in the iconic pool scene. It captures the essence of Barb’s melancholy and at the same time the terrifying danger that lurks in the dark. Catch Season 2 if you’ve not already done so, we’re not planning on any spoilers but justice has been served for Barb to immortalize her today, at least in Lego form.

LEGO her Eggo, or she’ll send you to the Upside Down

Fan conventions are a good gauge for which new movies and shows have wormed their way into the public consciousness. And from what I just witnessed at Emerald City Comic Con, the character Eleven from the hit Netflix series Stranger Things seems to represent the current zeitgeist. Eleven cosplayers were everywhere – both male, female, and even feline! A giant version of the Eleven pop vinyl was stationed outside the Funko booth. And Eleven actress Millie Bobby Brown even showed up to snag a copy for herself. Logic therefore dictated that this should be the subject of my latest pop culture LEGO creation:

To give the model a little more authenticity, I created custom stickers to decorate the waffles and Eggo boxes. I am also working on a presentation of the model for BrickCan that mimics the lightly-Photoshopped scene below in which Eleven demonstrates her paranormal control over toastable breakfast products:

Now dust off your calculator watches, BMX bikes and 1st edition Dungeon Master’s guides, because season two of the nostalgia-ramic sci-fi show drops this Halloween!
