The LEGO vault is opening again soon with the release of 10268 Creator Expert Vestas Wind Turbine on Black Friday. From the designer video included below, LEGO designer Carl Merriam shares some of the behind-the-scenes work that went into transforming the set from a limited exclusive released in 2008 to a product that will soon be available to everyone. Carl shows off some of the set’s stand out features (including the company’s new plant-based tree elements and a minifigure that looks surprisingly like himself) as well as the story of how he became a LEGO designer.
Check our review of the Vestas Wind Turbine for an even closer look. The set contains 826 pieces, three minifigures and a dog. It will sell for $199.99 US, $249.99 CAN, and £159.99 UK starting on Black Friday. Nov. 23.
The newest LEGO Creator vehicle, the 10262 James Bond Aston Martin DB5, was revealed in London today with surprise instant availability worldwide. The iconic car is packed with hidden features, gadgets and includes an ingenious way of making the LEGO car’s doors open and close like a real car.
We learned an interesting fact from the designer video included below, that scale of the vehicles in the Creator Expert line is determined by the size of the LEGO wheel that best fits the car. LEGO senior set designer Mike Psiaki said that since there are only a few set wheel sizes, the rest of the LEGO car is then sized accordingly by comparing it with reference photos of the real vehicle. He also talks about the hardest part of creating the set, and how working on a James Bond car was a childhood dream of his.
The LEGO James Bond Aston Martin DB5 is now available for LEGO VIPs with general availability August 1st for $149.99 USD.
LEGO Ideas has quickly become one of the most exciting and progressive product lines of the company, and the latest set, 21311 Voltron: Defender of the Universe is no different. From the designer video included below, we learn from LEGO designer Niek van Slagmaat and graphic designer Mark Tranter that the leg and arm connections on Voltron were the most challenging part of creating the functional set (and we get to see Niek being particularly fly with some beautiful drum-lacquered silver elements).
The set will be available July 23rd for LEGO VIPs and August 1st for everyone else for $179.99 USD. Look out for our thorough review coming later this week.
