LEGO Space Police, Indy, Castle, NXT 2.0, and other late 2009 sets revealed at Canadian toy show [News]

LEGO fans don’t normally get an official look at third-quarter LEGO set releases until Toy Fair New York in mid-February. However, CTV technology journalist Kris Abel visited the Canadian Toy & Hobby Fair in Toronto this past weekend, posting a full run-down of the late 2009 LEGO releases.

We’ve confirmed with The LEGO Group that this is official. Although Kris Abel reports that many of the sets and box art are still prototypes, his photos of the sets themselves are pretty good. In keeping with our new policy, then, here goes…

First up, LEGO Space Police!!!

5972 Container Heist opens up to reveal a massive cannon:

5974 Galactic Enforcer has classic (dare I say Classic?) lines:

The alien criminals in the LEGO Space Police sets have several new, unique pieces:

In LEGO Star Wars news, Endor gets a bunker (8038), the Y-Wing gets a facelift (8037), the Neimoidians get their own shuttle (with Nute Gunray minifig?), and 7749 Echo Base includes a first-ever LEGO tauntaun:

LEGO Power Miners sport a larger rock monster and a very large drilling platform:

The LEGO Indiana Jones assortment includes a boat chase, a pair of fighters, and a new Elsa Schneider minifig:

On the LEGO Castle front, the trolls get their castle and the undead make their return in 7079 Drawbridge Defense:

Finally, LEGO has announced MINDSTORMS NXT 2.0, with a new color sensor.

ChiefLUG Battlestar Galactica Viper Fly-In at BrickCon 2008

It was recently brought to my attention that we missed covering a major collaborative display at BrickCon last October. This was a major oversight on our part as this display was incredible. In fact, I think it was one of the best collaborative displays I’ve seen.

Ryan Wood, founder and namesake of ChiefLUG, organized the first ever BSG Viper fly-in. Ryan, Mark Sandlin, and Andrew Lee built 13 foot of hanger bay, which was filled to overflowing. So much so that there were Vipers covering all the tables around. The final count was 35 Vipers and other Battlestar Galactica-inspired craft. It was most impressive! I saw every imaginable Viper on display, from pink Pardisa-inspired to Black Fantasy-infected. I was amazed at the amount of time and effort Ryan and the ChiefLUGers put in to this. Needless to say, it spawned a huge bandwagon of Vipers online! You can check some of them in this post, by clicking on the pictures, or you can see the whole fleet in the ChiefLUG Flickr Group.

Green, Brown & Blaq

Cole Blaq has burst onto the Flickr Lego scene with some really nice offerings. My favorite is this camouflaged walker, simply dubbed “Jungle Bot”.

Rocko and his M8...what a pair!

Okay, I admit that I’m out of the loop on this one. But I’m sure someone will fill me in. These little bots were showing up everywhere at BrickCon. Then they started taking over Flickr. Now I’m helping them invade TBB. Why? I don’t even know. But this big one by Rocko is flippin’ sweet.

Edit: Since I stole Nannan’s thunder, he asked me to add the following link to the Flickr group administrated by Don Solo. Don is the originator of the epic Walter/M8 saga. All the information you need to know is in there. I learned a whole heap. Now I need to build my own….

It’s like Clockwork

This snazzy robotic individual is Rong Yiren‘s newest offspring. There is so much I could say but I’ll just let him speak for himself.

Nnenn’s first SHIP is godly

After building countless spacefighters, Nnenn decides to go big and makes his first SHIP, measuring more than 110 studs long, about 3 feet. Dubbed the Divine Intervention, this missile cruiser takes on all the qualities we expect from its superhuman maker. Unfortunately, the creation had a rather mortal lifespan, lasting only 24 hours from its moment of completion to the time of dismantlement, ready to be recycled into the next project.

There’s no denying the beauty of the groove of greebling found on the sides, and if you look closer, there are subtle asymmetrical variations on both sides.

Daniel Jassim’s Hurricane Heavy Assault Craft

This troop ship by Daniel Jassim is simply gorgeous. Classic lines, just enough greebles, perfect interior, and packed with functional details. You have to check out that front ramp! Overall, a really nice build.

Andrew Lee assaults the Red Planet

With a pair each of jump troopers and exo-suits, Andrew Lee‘s Martian diorama has a lot going on.

Note the excellent use of diving platforms as legs for the yellow exo-suit.

The Steamviper brings it

Personally, I’m a bit tired of the BSG Viper fad, but I had to make an exception here. V&A Steamworks cruises in with a Steampunk Viper and its full of nifty win. Check out those Duplo Pirate Pistols, Bionicle pieces and Harry Potter pieces! This thing is loaded with stuff that should never be in the same room together, let alone in the same creation. It workin’ though…really well.

Battleship Yamato... in space!

Vincent Cheung spent just 10 nights to build this amazing creation from the anime series Space Battleship Yamato. The model measures about 150 studs long, that’s the equivalent of four feet.

Steaming into the depths of space with Legohaulic

For a LEGO fan theme heavily influenced by Jules Verne — whose work includes From the Earth to the Moon, Around the Moon, and other space-faring 19th-century novels — there’s rather a dearth of LEGO steampunk creations set somewhere other than the surface of the Earth.

Tyler Clites fills that gap with his great set of vehicles. That’s a great, atmospheric photo (above), but the ships are worth a look on their own, too:

Nash’s Mobile Medical Unit to the rescue!

With a full interior and removable roof for access, Nash‘s Mobile Medical Unit is just the kind of LEGO model I’d love to see as a set.
