LEGO Collectible Minifigures Series 16 Feel Guide [News]

LEGO’s new Collectible Minifigures Series 16 is hitting stores around the world, so be sure to check out our review of Series 16. But how do you find the ones you want? Some people are happy taking their luck with purchasing a random bag, but many fans — be they kids, collectors, or just regular joes — will want to collect the whole set, or maybe just one or two very specific figures. You could guarantee that by purchasing an entire case, but buying 60 figures just to guarantee a set of 16 is very expensive. So, of course, the alternative is to ready your nimble figures and prognosticate what’s in the bags by touch alone. With years of experience doing this since Series 1, we’re here to help make that task a bit easier.

Nexo Knights 70318: The Glob Lobber | 70319: Macy’s Thunder Mace | 70320: Aaron Fox’s Aero-Striker V2 [Review]

The next wave of Nexo Knights is upon us, and we’re continuing our review series. We’ve already reviewed the four Ultimate series Nexo Knights sets. The sets are available in some markets already, and should be widely available soon.

Today we’ll be looking at 70318: The Glob Lobber, 70319: Macy’s Thunder Mace and 70320: Aaron Fox’s Aero-Striker V2.

70318: The Glob Lobber

70318 The Glob Lobber

In wave one of Nexo Knights we got two £7.99 / $9.99 / €9.99 sets that weren’t in the Ultimates line. These two were 70310: Knighton Battle Blaster and 70311: Chaos Catapult. In my opinion, these were perfect little sets: for a small amount of money you were getting two minifigures and some nice new pieces. I think these trump most of the Ultimate sets and even 853515: Knights Army-Building Set or 853516: Monsters Army-Building Set due to their inexplicably high price here in South Africa (close to $30).

LEGO Collectible Minifigs Series 16 [Review]

LEGO’s new Series 16 of the Collectible Minifigures is at the vanguard of the fall wave of sets ready to release in August. LEGO’s previous series was the Disney Collectible Minifigs, which proved to be insanely popular, but let’s see how this new wave holds up. Each of the 16 figures is unique, and like previous non-licensed series, the minifigs are from themes as disparate as babysitters to pirates. The color for Series 16 is yellow, and the vibrant banana-suit guy seems to be the mascot for this series.

Be sure to check out our Feel Guide to help you find all the figures you want!

New LEGO 10252 Volkswagen Beetle is totally radical, man! [Review]

Announced just last month and out on August 1st, The Brothers Brick is pleased to bring you a full review of the new 10252 Volkswagen Beetle, thanks to a special delivery from LEGO headquarters in Denmark. This new Beetle in stunning dark azure joins the dark green 10242 Mini Cooper and classic 10220 Volkswagen Camper Van in what I’m hoping is a permanent fixture in LEGO Creator sets. The set includes 1,167 pieces, and will retail for $99.99.

The build

We’ve come to expect some solid techniques and clever tricks in the “Expert” LEGO Creator series sets, many of which are very obviously designed by the numerous builders who have disappeared from the face of the Internet only to turn up in Billund. And that’s the case here — the set was designed by the very talented Mike Psiaki, whose LEGO creations we’ve featured many, many times here on The Brothers Brick over the years — most notably one of the best LEGO X-wings ever made.

Mike’s Beetle doesn’t disappoint. The 211 steps span an instruction booklet 124 pages thick. I recently also built the new LEGO Ghostbusters (2016) Ecto 1, and it had far more complicated techniques than this larger vehicle does, but the Beetle is still full of half-stud-offset, SNOT, complex headlight and bracket geometry, and other techniques you’ll rarely if ever see in a LEGO City set.

Brickmania M3A1 Scout Car custom LEGO kit [Review]

It’s been a couple of years since I’ve reviewed the custom LEGO kits designed by Dan Siskind of Brickmania. Back in 2013, I reviewed the Dodge WC54 Ambulance, and writing those reviews really got me started in building World War II models seriously. In the meantime, Dan and his team have continued to release new custom kits, on a near-weekly cadence. One of Dan’s recent Brickmania releases is the M3A1 Scout Car, produced by the White Motor Company between 1940 and 1944. The vehicle served throughout WW2, and its basic design served as the basis of the iconic M3 Half-track.

Brickmania M3A1 Scout Car

Like some of the custom kits I reviewed back in 2013, the M3A1 Scout Car is a WW2 vehicle I also built back in 2014, so I’ll be comparing Dan’s version with my own.

LEGO Star Wars 75149 Resistance X-wing Fighter [Review]

As part of the summer wave of LEGO Star Wars sets, LEGO released 75149 Resistance X-wing Fighter from The Force Awakens. The set includes three minifigs (plus BB-8) and 740 pieces.

75149 Resistance X-Wing Fighter

At first glance, this new X-wing looks a lot like 75102 Poe’s X-wing Fighter released last year, and your first glance would not be wrong.

LEGO Creator 10253 Big Ben [Review]

The clock tower of the British Houses of Parliament is an English icon known the world over. Oddly enough, the famously named Big Ben is actually the largest of the 5 bells housed within the tower, with the clock tower being properly called the Elizabeth Tower. However, over the last 157 years since the tower’s completion, it’s become globally known as Big Ben. And now it has inspired LEGO’s second largest architecture set ever, 10253 Big Ben, with 4,163 pieces. The set is currently available to LEGO VIP members, and will go on sale to everyone beginning July 1 for $249.99.
