What is the Mayo-trix?

If you’ve noticed a lot of ribbed flex-tubing in some of the builds we’ve featured this week, it’s because of this year’s first Iron Builder contest, featuring yet another mind bogglingly difficult-to-use seed part. In the current battle, Sean and Steph Mayo are up against Tyler Clites and our very own Nannan Zhang (…ah well, there goes any hope of impartiality!).

In their latest salvo, the Mayo’s have recreated a scene from the classic Matrix trilogy, which seems like the perfect companion to Tyler’s Zion Dock Defense from a few years back. We wait with bated breath to see how the two lads will respond!

“What the **** is the Internet?”

If you’ve seen even one of Kevin Smith’s movies, then these two lowlifes should need no introduction, as they appear in just about every one of them. Yep, it’s those wheeling, dealing, cussing 80’s throwbacks Jay and Silent Bob. Brought to you by TBB regular Letranger Absurde (aka “vitroleum” – who apparently has visited this particular stretch of wall before).

We’d invite them to comment on the accuracy of this scene themselves, but that would end up being a long series of asterisks, followed by a long series of blank spaces. Which given their antics and opinions, would probably be for the best. Especially for the executives at Miramax.

Chibi Aliens MicroFighters Contest entries

One of my favorite movies of all time is Aliens. It has everything a little boy would want: cool SHIP, fun dropships with APC, lots of action, and of course let’s not forget adorable aliens! So with the TBB’s Chibi MicroFighter contest, I was absolutely delighted to see not one, not two, but the three iconic builds from my favorite movie.

First up, we have Letranger Absurde (vitreolum) and his Chibi M77APC:

LEGO Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy

Sean and Steph Mayo just posted the most adorable Baby Groot (Sapling Groot?) ever. It was for a commission and I have to say that the new owner is very, very fortunate. I am Groot!

You should also check out two other versions by Jack M and Tyler. We’ve highlighted Tyler’s Groot before, but missed the boat on Jack’s.

LEGO Chibi Optimus Prime

Angus Maclane, famous for couches and Cube-Dudes, went and super-deformed Optimus Prime. I think he’s adorable. If they had only done the Transformers movies this way, it would have been so much better.

LEGO Batman Vs Superman

Tommy Williamson, of BrickNerd, has just released a hilarious film depicting an encounter between the Hero of Gotham and the Hero of Metropolis. The movie poster is pretty awesome as well…

We are going to need a bigger Lightsaber

Chris McVeigh has mimicked the classic ‘Jaws’ poster and shown us what goes on inside the fevered mind of the world’s whiniest Jedi. Swim, Luke, swim!

“We jumped out of a window!”

What do you get if you combine the Pillsbury dough boy with the Michelin man and the Stay Puft marshmallow man? You probably get BayMax, the robotic sidekick from Disney’s new animated adventure Big Hero 6 (very loosely based on a Marvel comic of the same name). Oregonian builder Cole Edmonson wasted no time in creating a LEGO version of our inflatable friend with his mortal enemy, a soccer ball.

Spoiler alert: He’s Luke’s dad!

For a Star Wars themed building contest over at Imperium Der Steine, German builder Disco86 had to come up with a creation who’s footprint was only 4×4 bricks. Not only did he manage to stay within the letter of the law, but he also managed to recreate one of the most iconic scenes of the entire franchise. Way to think outside the box!

“I wanna stuff some chocolate in my face!”

Inspired by his favorite song from the hugely popular Disney movie Frozen, Ian Spacek recreated this moment from the scene in which Anna sings the movie’s “I want” song – For the First Time in Forever.

Ian recently unveiled this at Brickworld Chicago, where I was lucky enough to see it up close. And fortunately, our pals from Beyond the Brick were there to interview Ian all about the build too. Wanna know how many log bricks it took to make that roof?! Watch and find out…

The Legend of Zorro

TheBrickAvenger captures the dashing masked-outlaw, Zorro, in this diorama featuring gorgeous Spanish architecture. The angled placement of the house and the subtle use of dark orange on the roof and sand green on the ground really enhances the overall appearance.

You killed the car!

Swedish LUG Swebrick recently held its annual “AFOL vs AFOL” building contest. The theme this year was to build any scene from an 80’s movie or TV show featuring a vehicle. First place went to Etzel87 for this perfect choice of moment from the cult movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off – a movie where the vehicle is actually the co-star! Some of the other entries were quite fun too.
